Decreased birthweights in infants after maternal in utero exposure to the Dutch famine of 1944-1945.

Using maternity records of the University of Amsterdam teaching hospital for births 1960-1984, obstetric outcomes in 1808 first-born singleton offspring of mothers born between 1 January 1944 and 30 June 1946 in The Netherlands were analysed. Most of these mothers had experienced, during intra-uterine life, a war-induced famine that lasted from November 1944 to May 1945. The study was prompted by a report on increased perinatal mortality in offspring of such mothers and it aimed at describing late effects, if any, of such an exposure. Mothers exposed to famine during their first and second tri

Early life exposure to 1959-1961 Chinese famine exacerbates association between diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to assess whether early life exposure to the Chinese famine (1959-1961) modifies the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood. METHODS: Data from 4247 adults born between 1954 and 1964 from the 2011 and 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were analyzed. CVD in 2011 and 2015 was based on self-reported doctor's diagnosis of cardiac events (heart attack, coronary heart disease, angina, congestive heart failure, or other heart problems) and stroke. Diabetes in 2011 was defined by fasting blood g

Prenatal undernutrition and leukocyte telomere length in late adulthood: the Dutch famine birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Energy restriction in prenatal life has detrimental effects on later life health and longevity. Studies in rats have shown that the shortening of telomeres in key tissues plays an important role in this association. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to investigate leukocyte telomere length in relation to prenatal famine exposure. DESIGN: The Dutch famine birth cohort consists of 2414 term singleton men and women who were born between 1943 and 1947 in Amsterdam around the time of the famine. At a mean age of 68 y, telomere length and the percentage of short telomeres was

Prenatal famine, birthweight, reproductive performance and age at menopause: the Dutch hunger winter families study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is there an association between acute prenatal famine exposure or birthweight and subsequent reproductive performance and age at menopause? SUMMARY ANSWER: No association was found between intrauterine famine exposure and reproductive performance, but survival analysis showed that women exposed in utero were 24% more likely to experience menopause at any age. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Associations between prenatal famine and subsequent reproductive performance have been examined previously with inconsistent results. Evidence for the effects of famine exposure on age at natural m

Molluscum contagiosum and herpes simplex in Maasai pastoralists; refeeding activation of virus infection following famine?

An epidemic of molluscum contagiosum and oro-genital herpes simplex was observed in Maasai pastoralists of the Rift Valley. It coincided with a period of refeeding following famine, when the relief diet was different from normal milk fare. We propose that refeeding may be an important mechanism for activation of certain viral infections previously suppressed by famine.

Cohort profile: the Dutch famine birth cohort (DFBC)- a prospective birth cohort study in the Netherlands.

PURPOSE: The Dutch famine birth cohort study was set up to investigate the effects of acute maternal undernutrition of the 1944-1945 Dutch famine during the specific stages of gestation on later health, with a particular focus on chronic cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, ageing and mental health. PARTICIPANTS: The Dutch famine birth cohort consists of 2414 singletons born alive and at term in the Wilhelmina Gasthuis in Amsterdam around the time of the Dutch famine (1943-1947) whose birth records have been kept. The cohort has been traced and studied since 1994, when the first data collec

Are Lipid Profiles in Middle Age Associated with Famine Exposure during Prenatal and Early Postnatal Period?

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition during early life may increase the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood, including dyslipidemia. Few investigations have confirmed the relationship between early life undernutrition and dyslipidemia in adulthood in China. OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between the Great Chinese Famine exposure during prenatal period or early postnatal period and lipid profiles in adulthood. DESIGN: Data were extracted from the China Nutrition and Health Survey (CNHS) in 2010-2012, which included the participants who experienced the Great Chinese Famine during early life.

Making exchange entitlements operational: the food economy approach to famine prediction and the RiskMap computer program.

The effect of production failure or some other shock on household income and food supply depends upon: (a) the pattern of household income, and (b) its ability to compensate for any deficit which may have occurred, for example, by the sale of assets or finding additional paid employment. The corollary is that the prediction of the likely effect of some event on the future state of the economy or food supply of a population of households requires an understanding of the economy of the households concerned and the economic context to which these relate. This paper describes an attempt to develop

Changing disaster relief regimes in China: an analysis using four famines between 1876 and 1962.

Once afflicted by frequent episodes of famine, China--particularly the Chinese state--is growing in importance as a player in the overseas aid and development sector. This paper examines four famines in modern China-defined as the period since the First Opium War of 1839-42-to shed light on the changing nature of state involvement in disaster relief in the country, while also demonstrating the breadth and diversity of relief agency in the past. It makes the case that traditional disaster relief principles and methods were active well into the twentieth century, and that the statist model of to

Early Famine Exposure Results in Left Ventricular Remodeled, Diastolic Dysfunction and Systolic Function Preserved in Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition during a critical window of development in a fetus or infant can result in abnormal cardiac remodeling and function. It is uncertain whether the contribution of these effects continues to impact the cardiac remodeling and function of adults over the course of several decades of growth. Our study examined the impact of early Chinese famine exposure on cardiac remodeling, left ventricular (LV) diastolic function, and LV systolic function in adults. METHODS: Participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease from the China Patient-Centered Evaluative Assessment of Car

The Great Irish Famine (1845-52) and the Irish asylum system: remembering, forgetting, and remembering again.

The Great Irish Famine (1845-52) saw the Irish population fall by 20% as one million people died and another million emigrated. The Famine occurred at a time when the Irish asylums were growing rapidly anyway, so its precise effects on mental health are difficult although not impossible to study. Three groups merit consideration. First, for adults living through the Famine, starvation and poverty contributed to the continued rise in asylum presentations. Second, babies in utero during the Famine were reported to have accounted for an increase in first admissions when they reached the high-risk

Diarrhoea of famine and malnutrition: investigations using a rat model. 1. Jejunal hypersecretion induced by starvation.

The effects of progressive starvation for up to three days on the secretory functions of the intestine were investigated using in vitro and in vivo preparations of rat jejunum and secretagogues whose action was either through cyclic AMP or Ca++. Initial starvation for 24 h (day 1) did not significantly alter the basal net electrogenic ion secretion measured in vitro as the short circuit current (Isc, muamps/cm2) or the change in electrogenic ion secretion (delta Isc) induced by the secretagogues. By day 2 of starvation, however, the maximum delta Isc transient induced by the cholinergic and ot

Differential regulation of the DNA methylome in adults born during the Great Chinese Famine in 1959-1961.

BACKGROUND: Extensive epidemiological studies have established the association between exposure to early-life adversity and health status and diseases in adults. Epigenetic regulation is considered as a key mediator for this phenomenon but analysis on humans is sparse. The Great Chinese Famine lasting from 1958 to 1961 is a natural string of disasters offering a precious opportunity for elucidating the underlying epigenetic mechanism of the long-term effect of early adversity. METHODS: Using a high-throughput array platform for DNA methylome profiling, we conducted a case-control epigenome-wi

Famine exposure in adolescence is associated with a higher risk of overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity in adulthood: A meta-analysis.

Some studies have shown that famine exposure during adolescence can increase cardiovascular disease and diabetes susceptibility in later life. The association between famine exposure in adolescence and overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity in adulthood has been inconsistent. Based on previous studies, we hypothesized that famine exposure in adolescence increases the risk of overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity in adulthood. Eight databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, were searched from their inception until November 2021. We initially identified 3982

Exposure to famine in every stage of life and the risk of osteoporosis and fractures later in life: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Data on the association between early-life famine exposure and osteoporosis and fractures remain limited and inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between famine exposure and osteoporosis and fractures. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using the first follow-up survey data from the China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort Study from 2014 to 2016. We classified 4807 Lanzhou participants into seven groups based on their birthday (non-exposed or exposed in the fetal stage, early childhood, mid-childhood, late child

Exposure to the Chinese Great Famine in Early Life and Thyroid Function and Disorders in Adulthood: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Malnutrition in early life may permanently change the structure and function of the body, which lead to a number of diseases in adulthood. The effect of famine exposure during the early life on thyroid function and disorders remains unclear. This study investigated the association between exposure to the Great Chinese Famine (1959-1961) in early life and thyroid function and disorders in adulthood. Methods: Nine thousand eight hundred eighty-one subjects with appropriate birth dates derived from the Thyroid disorders, Iodine status, and Diabetes Epidemiological survey were included
