BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is the main cause of heel pain. Conservative management is broad, but there is no consensus on the most effective adjuvant physical therapy.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effectiveness of phonophoresis plus stretching, therapeutic ultrasound plus stretching, and isolated stretching in reducing pain in patients with chronic PF.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized, single-blind clinical trial conducted in a rehabilitation unit. 60 patients with chronic PF were included, randomly assigned to 3 groups (n = 20 in each group): G1 (phonophoresis + stretching),

PURPOSE: To assess plantar fasciitis embolization (PFE) outcomes using combined non-selective posterior tibial artery embolization and super-selective embolization technique.
METHODS: Patients refractory to conservative treatment who underwent PFE with resorbable embolics were retrospectively reviewed. The temporary embolic agent was injected non-selectively in the posterior tibial artery. If the blush persisted after 5 minutes, the calcaneal branches leading to the hyperemia, were selected and embolized. Embolic agent injection was repeated until disappearance of arterial blush. Visual analo

OBJECTIVE: Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. The aetiology of this condition remains unclear. Patients typically have pain upon palpation of the medial plantar calcaneal region. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy has shown favourable outcomes in various studies. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy with radial pressure wave therapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-nine non-randomised patients diagnosed with plantar fasciitis were included between January 2017 and June 2018. Patients from the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital in Valen

An originally ambulatory 18-yr-old woman with spastic left hemiplegic cerebral palsy developed left plantar fasciitis with a gradual loss of function requiring use of a wheelchair. Her symptoms were resistant to physical therapy. Two hundred units of botulinum toxin A was diluted in 4 mL of saline and injected into the gastrocnemius. Three milliliters of autologous blood was injected into the plantar fascia. She reported decreased pain at 3 days postinjection. At 10 days, she had no pain on walking. Dorsiflexion increased and Ashworth and Tardieu improved. A stretching program was taught and a

BACKGROUND: Most patients with plantar fasciitis experience symptom relief with nonoperative management. However, a subset remains refractory to conservative treatments and may benefit from surgical intervention. Prior studies support the use of isolated gastrocnemius recession, demonstrating favorable short-term outcomes and low complication rates. Herein we assessed the outcomes following an isolated gastrocnemius recession for recalcitrant plantar fasciitis extended to midterm outcomes (36-89 months).
METHODS: Eighty-eight patients who underwent isolated gastrocnemius recession for recalci

Plantar heel pain is a common pain condition encountered in clinical practice. The common etiologies include plantar fasciitis, calcaneal spur, calcaneus stress fracture, systemic causes, and trauma. Neurogenic causes, including entrapment at the tarsal tunnel or Baxter's nerve entrapment, can contribute to the heel pain and should not be overlooked. In this case report, we describe a patient with severe heel pain, presenting with overlapping features of plantar fasciitis and neuropathic pain. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested Baxter's nerve entrapment, and a subsequent ultrasound-guided hy

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an increasingly popular therapeutic approach in the management of a number of tendinopathies. Benefit has been shown in calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff, but evidence for its use in non-calcific disorders is limited.
AIMS: To perform a double blind randomised controlled trial of moderate dose shock wave therapy in plantar fasciitis.
METHODS: Adults with plantar fasciitis for at least 3 months were randomised to receive either active treatment (0.12 mJ/mm(2)) or sham therapy, monthly for 3 months. Pain in the day, nocturnal pain a

The recent study by Novo-Rigueiro et al. adds important prospective evidence for low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) in refractory plantar fasciitis. After failure of conservative treatment and extracorporeal shock wave therapy, patients showed durable improvements in pain, function, and health-related quality of life, yet magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings correlated poorly with clinical response. This discrepancy deserves attention because structural imaging does not necessarily reflect therapeutic success. In benign radiotherapy, patient-reported outcomes, functional recovery, and quality o

Plantar fasciitis, which is extensively documented, is a common cause of heel pain in adults. Recent research has indicated that the illness is not only associated with inflammation but also degeneration. In addition to traditional treatments, non-surgical minimally invasive options, such as localized platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection, have shown promise in the management of plantar fasciitis. PRP is a concentrated solution containing a high concentration of biologically active molecules such as growth factors and cytokines, which are essential for regulating cellular processes including gr

Plantar fasciitis is a prevalent cause of heel pain in adults, particularly among the middle-aged population. It is characterized by microtrauma that exceeds the regenerative capacity of the plantar fascia. Although most cases respond well to conservative treatment, such as stretching exercises, orthotic use, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, some cases progress to chronic stages that require second-line therapies, including extracorporeal shockwave therapy, corticosteroid or platelet-rich plasma injections, or surgical plantar fascia release. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy

OBJECTIVE: The most common causes of plantar and heel pain are plantar fasciitis and calcaneal spurs, and they often co-exist. Surgery is a recognized treatment for refractory plantar fasciitis. However, few studies have proposed treatment options for patients with metatarsophalangeal fasciitis with bone spurs. Accordingly, this study's purpose was to propose a four-step surgical regimen, and to improve the surgical outcome of plantar fasciitis with osteophytes and to establish a procedure for surgical treatment.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 45 patients suffering from plantar fasciitis

PURPOSE: To assess if plantar fasciitis has an impact on postural control and walking pattern from gait analysis across different experimental conditions.
METHODS: Thirty participants (n = 15 with plantar fasciitis) performed 5 different balance tasks on a force platform, and the center of pressure (COP) was computed for postural control analysis. Participants were also asked to walk at 3 different speeds on a gait analysis system to compute the spatial-temporal parameters. Clinical foot measurements (pain, mobility) were also collected through all participants.
RESULTS: Clinical foot measur

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is the most common cause of heel pain that affects 10% of the general population, whether living an athletic or sedentary lifestyle. The most frequent mechanism of injury is an inflammatory response that is caused by repetitive micro trauma. Many techniques are available to diagnose PF, including the use of ultrasonography (US).
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to systematically review and appraise previously published articles published between the years 2000 and 2015 that evaluated the effectiveness of using US in the process of diagnosing PF, as comp

This case report describes an approach for determining when fabricated orthoses might be useful in the treatment of a patient with foot-related problems. The patient is of special interest because she is an aerobics instructor, and her type of injury is relatively common. Particular emphasis in the report is placed on hypothesizing the cause of the patient's complaints and then basing treatment on that hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is characterized by heel pain and functional limitations, with hyperpronation identified as a primary risk factor. Mechanical correction of malalignment is one of several therapeutic options, but no one has settled on a single, comprehensive treatment protocol. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a multimodal rehabilitation program that incorporates both active and passive correction of the foot’s pathomechanics on pain intensity, function, plantar fascia thickness, foot posture, and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion in patients with PF, in co

BACKGROUND Traditional ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are not effective in treating plantar fasciitis, while customized 3-dimensional (3D) printed ankle-foot orthoses are effective in treating many ankle-foot diseases. This study investigated the effects of customized 3D printed AFOs on biomechanics and comfort of the plantar foot in plantar fasciitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty patients with bilateral plantar fasciitis aged 31-60 years participated in this study. At week 0, patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups: the control group consisting of those wearing separate shoes with prefabricat

Background/Objectives: Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy are clinically linked conditions that share numerous biomechanical predispositions; however, the sonographic morphological correlations between the plantar fascia (PF) and Achilles tendon (AT) remain underutilized in routine diagnostic algorithms. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the concurrent relationship between the ultrasound morphometrics of the PF and AT in patients with plantar fasciitis. The secondary objective was an exploratory assessment to evaluate whether AT measurements can serve as an auxili
