[Developmental characteristics of the causative agent of fasciolopsiasis and its epidemiology in Vietnam].

The authors consider the specific features of development ofa Fasciolopsis buski trematode in the environment and intermediate and final hosts. It has been ascertained that under the conditions of Vietnam, the eggs may develop in the temperature range of 20 to 34 degrees C, which takes 20 to 51 days. The eggs die at less than 12 degrees C. As a new intermediate host of the trematode, the authors have registered the mollusk Indoplanorbis exutus, the development of the parasite in which occurs within 32-37 days at 27-33 degrees C. Invasiveness of adolescaria reduces with age. The parasite develo

First studies on the susceptibility of Omphiscola glabra (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) from central France to Fascioloides magna.

Experimental infections of Omphiscola glabra (preadult snails), originating from central France, to a Czech isolate of Fascioloides magna miracidia were carried out to determine if the local populations of O. glabra may ensure the larval development of this parasite and to compare these results with those noted for a natural snail host, Galba truncatula. The presence of experimentally infected snails was noted in the six populations of snails studied. However, only a few snails shed their cercariae (O. glabra 5.3 to 17.1%, G. truncatula 15.1% in the first population, and no shedding in the oth

Fasciolopsis buski infection in a Vietnamese pregnant woman with systemic lupus erythematosus.

A clinical case of infection caused by Fasciolopsis buski in a 24 weeks pregnant woman from Vietnam affected by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is reported here. On 22 February 2012 the patient was admitted to Hue Hospital in Hue, Vietnam, with a diagnosis of general illness and suspected acute anaemia. Laboratory analysis indicated possible SLE syndrome and coprological tests demonstrated the presence of F. buski eggs. During hospitalization the patient naturally eliminated the adult form in faeces suggesting the infection had already progressed at least for three months. One month after h

Landscape influence on spatial patterns of meningeal worm and liver fluke infection in white-tailed deer.

Parasites that primarily infect white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), such as liver flukes (Fascioloides magna) and meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis), can cause morbidity and mortality when incidentally infecting moose (Alces alces). Ecological factors are expected to influence spatial variation in infection risk by affecting the survival of free-living life stages outside the host and the abundance of intermediate gastropod hosts. Here, we investigate how ecology influenced the fine-scale distribution of these parasites in deer in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota. Deer pelle

High prevalence of Fasciolopsis buski in an endemic area of liver fluke infection in Thailand.

There is a high prevalence of Fasciolopsis buski in Sawasdee Village in the Nam Som District, Udonthani Province in northeastern Thailand, an endemic area of liver fluke infection. From stool examination of 183 villagers participating in the study, the authors detected a fluke parasitic infection rate of 14.8% (27 cases). Of interest, the authors found a similar high prevalence of both Opisthorchis viverrini (16 cases, 8.7%) and F buski (13 cases, 7.1%). This region is the endemic area of liver fluke, not of F buski. The surrounding environment is the hill area of Nayoong Namsom mountain, whic

Global distribution of zoonotic digenetic trematodes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Digenetic trematodes, including blood flukes, intestinal flukes, liver flukes, lung flukes, and pancreatic flukes, are highly diverse and distributed widely. They affect at least 200 million people worldwide, so better understanding of their global distribution and prevalence are crucial for controlling and preventing human trematodiosis. Hence, this scoping review aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the spatio-temporal distribution and epidemiology of some important zoonotic digenetic trematodes. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review by searching PubMed, Web of Scie

Pharmacokinetic behavior in sheep and cattle of 5-chloro-2-(methylthio)-6-(1-naphthyloxy)-1H-benzimidazole, a new fasciolicide agent.

The physicochemical properties, pK(a), Log P and solubility of compound alpha, (5-chloro-2-(methylthio)-6-(1-naphthyloxy)-1H-benzimidazole), a new fasciolicide agent, were characterized using conventional methods. Also, its pharmacokinetics was evaluated in sheep and cattle. In both species an oral dose of 12 mg/kg was administered. Blood samples were collected during 144 h and analyzed by using an HPLC assay. Results showed that compound alpha is a weak base with a pK(a) value of 2.87 and log P of 1.44. The solubility was very low in aqueous solvents. Pharmacokinetic studies showed that in bo

Distribution of potential intermediate hosts for Fasciola hepatica and Fascioloides magna in Montana, USA.

A collection of lymnaeid snails in Montana was made over a 3 year period, in conjunction with a state-wide survey of the distribution of liver flukes in Montana. Collection areas were selected based on reports of infected cattle, sheep or wildlife, and with the intent of covering all geographic regions of the state. Snails were found at all 97 of the locations chosen for collections, with lymnaeids collected at 71 of the locations. The 97 sites were located in 28 of Montana's 56 counties. Nine lymnaeid species were collected, five of which have been reported either as natural or experimental i

[Role of gastropods in epidemiology of human parasitic diseases].

Pulmonate and prosobranch snails, being necessary hosts for parthenogenetic generations of digenetic trematodes, participate in transmission of all trematodoses important from medical point of view. Role of particular gastropods in epidemiology of these diseases is discussed in details. Invasion of land snails and slugs is mainly passive by eggs containing developed miracidia, while enter of these larvae into snails inhabiting fresh-water environments is usually active. Generations in the snail host between miracidia and cercariae vary considerable, depending upon the fluke species. Generally,

The treatment of Fasciolopsis buski infection in children: a comparison of thiabendazole, mebendazole, levamisole, pyrantel pamoate, hexylresorcinol and tetrachloroethylene.

Four relatively new broad spectrum anthelmintics (thiabendazole, mebendazole, levamisole and pyrantel pamoate) were compared with two older anthelmintics, (tetrachloroethylene and hexylresorcinol) to treat heavy Fasciolopis buski infections in 17 children aged 4-13 years in hospital. Tetrachloroethylene was the most effective drug in these 17 children and another 49. Large numbers of worms were expelled and faecal egg counts were markedly reduced (99%). The mean number of worms per child was 122 with a range of 7 to 818. All the other anthelmintics tested were ineffective; no worms or only a f

Fasciolopsiasis: a first case report from Malaysia.

Fasciolopsiasis is a disease caused by the largest intestinal fluke, Fasciolopsis buski. The disease is endemic in the Far East and Southeast Asia. Human acquires the infection after eating raw freshwater plants contaminated with the infective metacercariae. There has been no report of fasciolopsiasis either in man or in animal in Malaysia. We are reporting the first case of fasciolopsiasis in Malaysia in a 39-year-old female farmer, a native of Sabah (East Malaysia). This patient complained of cough and fever for a duration of two weeks, associated with loss of appetite and loss of weight. Sh

Identification and characterization of microRNAs in the zoonotic fluke Fasciolopsis buski.

Fasciolopsis buski is a food-borne zoonotic parasite which is transmitted by aquatic plants, with pigs and humans as the definitive hosts. The objective of the present study was to characterize the microRNA (miRNA) profiles of this parasite by Solexa deep sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Approximately 12 million high-quality reads were obtained from adult F. buski. A total of 286 miRNA candidates were found and 24 miRNA candidates were conserved miRNAs in the miRBase database. Three novel miRNAs were identified and confirmed by stem-loop reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (R

Case Report: Surgical Intervention for Fasciolopsis buski Infection: A Literature Review.

Fasciolopsis buski, also called the giant intestinal fluke, is the largest intestinal fluke of the zoonotic trematode parasites and found mainly in Southeast Asian countries, including China. Fasciolopsis buski infection was formerly a common health problem in many countries, but it is now rare. Typically, it can be cured by oral drugs, but some infected patients need surgical intervention because of the severity of their condition or because of an unclear diagnosis or even misdiagnosis. Here, we report a case of a 15-year-old girl from Guizhou Province, China, presenting with recurrent upper-

Humoral immune responses during experimental infection with Fascioloides magna and Fasciola hepatica in goats and comparison of their excretory/secretory products.

This study investigated the humoral immune responses of goats experimentally infected with Fascioloides magna and Fasciola hepatica to F. magna excretory/secretory products (FmESP) or F. hepatica excretory/secretory products (FhESP), respectively. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine serum antibody responses and for possible discrimination of F. magna and F. hepatica infections in goats. Comparison of ESPs of both flukes and evaluation of ESP antigenicity was also studied applying immunoblotting techniques. In all infected goats, antibody level was significantly i

A western blot and ELISA assay for the diagnosis of Taenia solium infection in pigs.

An enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) was developed using soluble Taenia solium metacestode antigen preparation for immunodiagnosis of porcine cysticercosis and compared with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Sera from 20 pigs with parasitologically confirmed cysticercosis were tested by both EITB and ELISA assays. Specificity of the tests was examined by testing 25 serum samples from the UK, where cysticercosis is not endemic and sera from pigs with Echinococcus granulosus (15), Fasciolopsis buski (six), or Trichinella spiralis (five) infections.
