Coeliac disease in the father affects the newborn.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Untreated coeliac disease in the mother is associated with lower birth weight. We examined the risk of adverse neonatal outcome when the infant's mother, father, or other relative suffered from known coeliac disease. METHODS: Mothers answered a questionnaire a few days after the birth of their infant. Of a total of 10,597 single birth infants from Southeast Sweden, 53 infants had a mother with coeliac disease (father 27, sibling 70, other close relative 442). Adjusted odds ratios and adjusted differences for neonatal outcome were calculated. RESULTS: Infants whose father

Nerve transplantation: a father's final gift.

Offering the option of organ and tissue donation to grieving families may seem stressful, but asking the question may provide a positive means to extend care to the bereaved family and help others in return. Many donor families have said donation was an opportunity to make some sense out of a senseless situation and to relieve some of the grief they experienced. This article presents a case that started with such a discussion by ICU nurses in one of our donor hospitals, and ended with successful organ and tissue recovery and transplantation. As "routine" as this may sound, it was anything but

Subfecundity according to the age of the mother and the father.

Time to pregnancy according to the age of the father and the mother has been studied among 10,886 couples from Odense and Aalborg. Late in their pregnancy (36th week) all woman in the two cities were given a questionnaire on time to pregnancy as well as a number of other items. Eighty-six percent responded to this questionnaire, and data concerning previous pregnancies, the outcome of the pregnancy in question, etc., were later collected from medical files. The study showed a strong correlation between mother's age and subfecundity, even after adjustment for a number of potential confounders.

Hippocrates, the true father of hand surgery.

The methods used by Hippocrates for treating fractures and dislocations formed the basis for further development in operations performed upon the hand. He described the common distal radial fracture, and the method to reduce and immobilize it. Of carpal dislocations, he mentioned two patterns which are similar to the common "anterior dislocation of the lunate" and the "perilunar dislocation." He treated pressure sores and wound infection with frequent dressings, application of heat and mechanical debridement; limb necrosis was treated with delayed amputation, and tetanus, with immediate explor

The effect of divorce on fathers: an overview of the literature.

Divorce is becoming a major mental health problem in the United States. With rare exception psychological attention has usually focused on the effect of divorce on children and mothers. The author suggests that as some fathers become more involved in family nurturing they will be more intensely affected by marital disruption, particularly as it involves changes in the relationship to their children. A review of the recent psychological literature on divorce and custody is presented as a framework for understanding the divorcing father who is requesting psychiatric help.

Exploring Fatherhood Attitudes and Substance Use Among Incarcerated Fathers.

In the United States, high incarceration rates disproportionately affect marginalized communities, exacerbating challenges for disadvantaged families. This study explores the relationship between substance use and fatherhood attitudes among incarcerated fathers to inform interventions that promote familial well-being. Using data from the Multi-site Family Study on Incarceration (MFS-IP), the study analyzes the fatherhood attitudes and substance use history of 1,047 incarcerated fathers. Findings reveal a significant negative correlation between substance use and positive fatherhood attitudes.

Cardiac Manifestations in Children of Diabetic Mothers and Fathers.

Diabetic individuals of reproductive age face higher risks of poor pregnancy outcomes and abnormal fetal development. Approximately 4.5% of women of reproductive age have diabetes, with non-Hispanic Black women having the highest prevalence of 15%. Research on the impact of paternal diabetes on offspring cardiac anomalies is limited, but it may interact with metabolic syndrome to increase long-term health risks. Infants of diabetic parents are more likely to develop cyanotic and acyanotic heart defects, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and subsequently other cardiovascular issues. Fetal hyperinsul

A Longitudinal Examination of Housing Hardships Among Urban Fathers.

Stable housing is widely recognized as a prerequisite for the functioning of individuals and families. However, the housing stability of fathers is under-studied, particularly for fathers living apart from their children. This analysis measures the extent and nature of fathers' housing insecurity using the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a national longitudinal survey of urban families. Housing insecurity affects a substantial portion of fathers, with 25 percent experiencing insecurity at least once in their child's first nine years. However, few fathers report persistent insecurit

Event-related potentials in alcoholic fathers and their sons.

ERPs were recorded during a simple color discrimination and a more difficult visual continuous performance task (CPT) from three father-son (n = 15) pair groups: recovering alcoholics with a family history of alcoholism and their sons (A+), nonalcoholics with a family history of alcoholism and their sons (NA+), and nonalcoholics with no family history of alcoholism and their sons (NA-). The sons, aged 8 to 12, had not begun drinking or using other drugs. Groups were matched on age, education and socioeconomic status. There were two principal findings. Compared to nonalcoholic groups, both A+ s

Fathers' Presence Makes a Difference During Children's Evening Meals.

This observational study used descriptive analysis to improve understanding of the relationship between fathers' presence or absence, the occurrence of mothers' feeding practices, and child eating behaviors at evening meals. Participants were 141 Mexican-origin families with children aged 8 to 10 years. We coded behavioral observations of video-recorded meals. Three parental feeding practices were established a priori: (1) pressure to eat, (2) restriction of amount of food, and (3) positive involvement in child's meals. Additionally, we identified child eating behaviors and food eaten. Fewer m

Fathers' experiences of caring for children with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Although caregiving for children with developmental disabilities has been widely examined, fathers' experiences remain relatively underexplored. This qualitative descriptive study explored fathers' caregiving experiences in the context of children with developmental disabilities, focusing on psychological, social, economic, and systemic dimensions of caregiving and fathers' coping and adaptation processes. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 19 fathers of children diagnosed with develo

Australian fathers' experiences of caring for their preterm infants.

Fathers and/or non-birthing partners are now actively involved in child-rearing globally; however some experience emotional difficulties during the perinatal period. With the birth of a preterm infant, parents experience additional stress beyond that normally engendered by having a baby, which can impact on parent-infant relationship and infant development. In Australia, there is limited evidence on fathers' experiences of preterm birth. Thus, this study aimed to explore the experiences of Australian fathers of preterm infants including their emotional and physical wellbeing when they have a p

Sleep patterns and fatigue in new mothers and fathers.

The purpose of this study was to describe the sleep patterns and fatigue of both mothers and fathers before and after childbirth. The authors used wrist actigraphy and questionnaires to estimate sleep and fatigue in 72 couples during their last month of pregnancy and 1st month postpartum. Both parents experienced more sleep disruption at night during the postpartum period as compared to the last month of pregnancy. Compared to fathers, with their stable 24-h sleep patterns over time, mothers had less sleep at night and more sleep during the day after the baby was born. Sleep patterns were also

Treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: the fathers' perspective.

Research on parental adaptation to a child's chronic illness is still scant, and this is particularly so in relation to the experience of treatment for paediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). The work that does exist on parental reactions tends to conflate maternal responses with paternal responses, as fathers are usually seen as having a secondary role. Consequently, little is known about how fathers cope with treatment for childhood ALL. The present discussion seeks to make a contribution to this area by presenting findings on the paternal experience of treatment for paediatric ALL f

Recollections of their fathers by homosexual and heterosexual men.

A nonrandom, nonclinical t-test comparison study of 30 homosexual and 30 heterosexual men was conducted to describe their memories of their fathers' behaviors toward them. Previous studies had identified the "classical pattern," that is, the fathers of homosexual men were considered cold, hostile, and distant. Those studies were sparked by Freudian theory which postulated the same. Therefore, a brief revisitation has been conducted. Again, the findings supported the earlier, that is, the homosexual men recalled their fathers as more rejecting and less loving than the heterosexual men.
