Predicting neuronal response properties from hemodynamic responses in the auditory cortex.

Recent functional MRI (fMRI) studies have highlighted differences in responses to natural sounds along the rostral-caudal axis of the human superior temporal gyrus. However, due to the indirect nature of the fMRI signal, it has been challenging to relate these fMRI observations to actual neuronal response properties. To bridge this gap, we present a forward model of the fMRI responses to natural sounds combining a neuronal model of the auditory cortex with physiological modeling of the hemodynamic BOLD response. Neuronal responses are modeled with a dynamic recurrent firing rate model, reflect

Depressed Adolescents' Pupillary Response to Peer Acceptance and Rejection: The Role of Rumination.

Heightened emotional reactivity to peer feedback is predictive of adolescents' depression risk. Examining variation in emotional reactivity within currently depressed adolescents may identify subgroups that struggle the most with these daily interactions. We tested whether trait rumination, which amplifies emotional reactions, explained variance in depressed adolescents' physiological reactivity to peer feedback, hypothesizing that rumination would be associated with greater pupillary response to peer rejection and diminished response to peer acceptance. Twenty currently depressed adolescents

Social spatial structure and psychological mechanisms of seat-occupying behavior in university libraries-based on grounded theory analysis.

Occupying seats in university libraries is a situated practice shaped by the interaction of resource availability, environmental-psychological needs, institutional rules, and student responses under academic pressure. To reveal the underlying social logic of its emergence, grounded theory was employed to conduct coding analysis on 496 analyzable units derived from heterogeneous documentary, public-discourse, visual, and observational sources, and a multidimensional theoretical model of the social spatial structure of seat occupancy in university libraries was constructed. The analysis suggests

Improving validity and efficiency of digital dyslexia screening through trial-by-trial feedback.

Trial-by-trial feedback is a powerful tool across scientific disciplines, offering real-time information that shapes learning, attention, and behavioral adjustment. However, its role in large-scale educational and psychological assessments remains underexplored. This study examines whether providing trial-by-trial performance feedback during a digital dyslexia screener enhances engagement without compromising score validity or interpretability. Engagement is a critical threat to validity in assessments, particularly among young children in digital universal screening contexts. We conducted two

Neural imbalance between feedback sensitivity and motor inhibition in compulsivity and negative urgency.

Compulsivity and emotional impulsivity (negative urgency) are considered transdiagnostic risk factors for compulsive-impulsive psychopathology that is linked to a neural imbalance between executive and motivational-emotional systems. However, existing evidence does not derive from within-subjects designs, leaving it unclear whether imbalance occurs with high expressions in compulsivity and negative urgency. To address this gap, we conducted a preregistered analysis to examine how feedback sensitivity and motor inhibition interact as a function of compulsivity and negative urgency.Participants

The enhancement of video feedback by cognitive preparation in the treatment of social anxiety. A single-session experiment.

The present study replicates and extends Harvey, Clark, Ehlers and Rapee's (Behav. Res. Therapy 38 (2000) 1183-1192) single-session experiment of video feedback with cognitive preparation in individuals with high social anxiety. Forty participants high on social anxiety were asked to present a speech before a video camera and then received video feedback of their speech. Half of the participants received cognitive preparation prior to the video feedback, whereas the other half only received video feedback. The cognitive preparation procedure asked the participants to (1) predict in detail what

Does personalized feedback improve the outcome of cognitive-behavioural guided self-care in bulimia nervosa? A preliminary randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Feedback has long been a part of psychosocial and health behaviour interventions and with the advent of computerised assessment and treatment tools, is gaining greater importance. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the addition of personalized feedback to a guided cognitive-behavioural (CBT) self-help programme for patients with bulimia nervosa. DESIGN: Randomised-controlled trial. METHOD: 61 patients with DSM-IV bulimia nervosa or eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) were randomly allocated to receive 14 sessions of cognitive behavioural guided self-care wit

Learning from feedback is independent from feedback visibility, but supported by aperiodic neural activity.

Humans and other animals learn from feedback, by tending to repeat rewarded behavior and change behavior that receives negative feedback. Previous findings suggest that feedback does not need to be consciously perceived in order to be effective. Using continuous flash suppression, we presented participants with visible and invisible positive and negative feedback during a time estimation task while recording EEG. Behavioral results showed that both visible and invisible feedback significantly influenced time estimation error and adjustment in trial N+1, suggesting that subliminal reward inform

Does the Brain's Reward Response Occur Even Without Actual Reward? A Response to Fielding et al. (2017).

A recent paper by Fielding et al. (J Gamb Stud, 2017) argued that the brain's reward response could occur without the presentation of actual reward. We suggest that since (a) the event-related potentials reported in this paper are atypical of the previous literature, and, (b) a simpler account of the data in terms of sensitivity to outcome frequency cannot be ruled out, the extent to which the brain's reward response can occur without the presentation of actual reward should remain an open question.

Treatment of chronic fatigue with neurofeedback and self-hypnosis.

A 21 year old patient reported a relatively rapid onset of serious chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), with her worst symptoms being cognitive impairments. Congruent with research on rapid onset CFS, she had no psychiatric history and specialized testing did not suggest that somatization was likely. Neuroimaging and EEG research has documented brain dysfunction in cases of CFS. Therefore, a quantitative EEG was done, comparing her to a normative data base. This revealed excessive left frontal theta brainwave activity in an area previously implicated in SPECT research. Therefore, a novel treatment

Reward processing dominates the brain during feedback evaluation: Electrophysiological evidence.

During reinforcement learning, people learn based on both positive and negative feedback. Researchers have revealed the reward positivity (RewP) that reflects positive feedback evaluation, however, no electrophysiological indicator has been found to explain negative feedback processing. In reinforcement learning, people would like to expect the positive feedback after a choice, which might explain why previous studies usually found neural responses for reward processing, while the negative feedback processing seems absent. However, no study has designed a task to separate positive and negative

An Examination of Cardiac Vagal Control Indices and Cognitive Stress Appraisal in Cigarette Smokers.

Identifying factors that influence how individuals who smoke cigarettes respond to stress is important as stress is a risk factor for smoking and its maintenance. This study examined the modulatory role of cardiac vagal control (CVC), a physiological correlate of self-regulation, on cognitive stress appraisal processes of adults who smoke. Sixty daily cigarette smokers were randomized to receive positive or negative feedback during a modified Trier Social Stress Test. Pre- and post-task stress appraisals were assessed and resting and reactivity CVC measures were computed. Moderated regression

The Effect of Evaluating Others' Decision-Making Results on Subsequent Decision-Making.

Effective decision-making is crucial for both individuals and organizations. To improve individual's decision-making, traditional methods involve practicing and providing feedback. While these methods are effective, we propose evaluating others' decision-making as a more efficient training approach, and in this study, we explore its potential through two experiments. In Experiment 1,109 participants completed an initial task and then took part in training under two conditions: evaluating others' decision-making results as correct or incorrect, and practicing decision-making with feedback. Afte

Advising the ill-advised: Debiasing the conjunction fallacy through gamified training with outcome feedback.

Many real-world decisions involve uncertainty, yet some are governed by logical constraints that make certain outcomes objectively more or less probable. Despite this, people often commit reasoning errors such as the conjunction fallacy, i.e. judging a conjunction of events as more likely than a single constituent event. This fallacy has proven robust across populations and contexts, and difficult to fully mitigate. While previous research has shown that reformulating problems or providing explicit instruction can reduce such errors, these approaches often yield limited success and may not gen

Effects of multimodal feedback on L2 English learners' lexical stress error correction: The role of learning style and feedback preference.

Lexical stress contributes to intelligibility and comprehensibility in English, yet it remains challenging for many second language (L2) learners and is often underemphasized in pronunciation instruction. With the rapid development of technology-enhanced language learning, multimodal feedback delivered through text, audio, or visual cues offers promising avenues for improving L2 pronunciation, although evidence for its effectiveness on lexical stress remains limited. This study examined how different feedback modes facilitate the correction of English lexical stress errors and whether learning

Mirror visual feedback for the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome (type 1).

Mirror visual feedback was originally devised as a therapeutic tool to relieve perceived involuntarily movements and paralysis in the phantom limb. Since this pioneering work was conducted in the mid-1990s, the technique has been applied to relieve pain and enhance movement in other chronic conditions such as stroke and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1. This review describes how mirror visual feedback was first developed with amputees, its original application in CRPS, and how further research has demonstrated its potential benefit within graded motor imagery programs. We discuss t
