Cerebellum-inspired neural network of supervised learning with tensor-based sparse coding for multi-class classification.

Under the Marr-Ito-Albus framework, the cerebellum performs supervised learning in Purkinje cells upon the unsupervised sparse representations generated within granule cells, contributing fundamentally to associative learning in motor control. However, the specific mechanisms through which cerebellar circuitry and plasticity rules enable supervised learning, and properties of the sparse coding induced by cerebellar architectural constraints, remain poorly characterized. To address this, we first established a sparse coding mechanism inspired by anatomical and physiological properties of the gr

A neural substrate for atypical low-level visual processing in autism spectrum disorder.

An important characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increased visual detail perception. Yet, there is no standing neurobiological explanation for this aspect of the disorder. We show evidence from EEG data, from 31 control subjects (three females) and 13 subjects (two females) aged 16-28 years, for a specific impairment in object boundary detection in ASD, which is present as early as 120 ms after stimulus presentation. In line with a neural network model explicating the role of feedforward, horizontal and recurrent processing in visual perception, we can attribute this deficit to

D-Lax-Pair-FIND: Data-driven reconstruction of the evolution operators in Lax pairs for discrete integrable equations.

The Lax pair stands as a central concept in the theory of integrable systems, whose discovery holds considerable significance for solving and analyzing nonlinear evolution equations. To address the challenge of discovering Lax pairs from observational data, we propose D-Lax-Pair-FIND, a data-driven methodology that synergistically combines deep learning with sparse regression to automatically discover the evolution operators in Lax pairs of discrete integrable equations with known spectral operators. The approach employs fully connected feedforward neural networks to approximate solutions of s

Improved Surface Electromyogram-Based Hand-Wrist Force Estimation Using Deep Neural Networks and Cross-Joint Transfer Learning.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) and transfer learning (TL) have been used to improve surface electromyogram (sEMG)-based force estimation. However, prior studies focused mostly on applying TL within one joint, which limits dataset size and diversity. Herein, we investigated cross-joint TL between two upper-limb joints with four DNN architectures using sliding windows. We used two feedforward and two recurrent DNN models with feature engineering and feature learning, respectively. We found that the dependencies between sEMG and force are short-term (<400 ms) and that sliding windows are sufficient

Modelling the impact of awareness campaigns on HPV transmission dynamics: a neural network-enhanced mathematical model.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection; most sexually active individuals are exposed to HPV at some point in their lives, and the majority of these infections resolve naturally through the immune system. However, persistent infection with high-risk HPV types is the leading cause of cervical cancer worldwide, underscoring the importance of vaccination and early detection in reducing disease burden. In this study, the effect of an awareness campaign on the dynamics of human papillomavirus infection has been investigated through a mathematical model using neural networks. The basic

PepTCR-Net: prediction of multi-class antigen peptides by T-cell receptor sequences with deep learning.

Predicting T-cell receptor (TCR) recognizing antigen peptides is crucial for understanding the immune system and developing new treatments for cancer, infectious and autoimmune diseases. As experimental methods for identifying TCR-antigen recognition are expensive and time-consuming, machine-learning approaches are increasingly used. However, existing computational tools often struggle with generalization due to limited data and challenges in acquiring true non-recognition pairs and rarely integrate multiple biological features into unified frameworks. To address these challenges, we propose a

Deep Learning-Based Prediction of Pathogenicity for ABL1 Protein Variants Using Sequence Representation.

The ABL1 gene encodes a non-receptor tyrosine kinase implicated in leukemia and other genetic disorders. This study presents a deep learning-based approach for predicting the pathogenicity of ABL1 single amino acid variants (SAVs) using amino acid sequence representations. Variant data collected from UniProt, ClinVar, dbSNP, and EVS databases were encoded through embedding and transformer-based methods. Multiple architectures-Feedforward, Conv1D, BiLSTM, Transformer, and Prot-BERT-were evaluated under six data partitioning scenarios. The Convolutional Neural Network achieved the highest perfor

Least Squares Neural Network-Based Wireless E-Nose System Using an SnO₂ Sensor Array.

Over the last few decades, the development of the electronic nose (E-nose) for detection and quantification of dangerous and odorless gases, such as methane (CH₄) and carbon monoxide (CO), using an array of SnO₂ gas sensors has attracted considerable attention. This paper addresses sensor cross sensitivity by developing a classifier and estimator using an artificial neural network (ANN) and least squares regression (LSR), respectively. Initially, the ANN was implemented using a feedforward pattern recognition algorithm to learn the collective behavior of an array as the signature of a particul

Prediction of CW chord as a measure for the eye's orientation axis after cataract surgery from preoperative IOLMaster 700 measurement data.

BACKGROUND: The angles alpha and kappa are widely discussed for centring refractive procedures, but they cannot be determined with ophthalmic instruments. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Chang-Waring chord (position of the Purkinje reflex PI relative to the corneal centre) derived from an optical biometer before and after cataract surgery and to study the changes resulting from cataract surgery. METHODS: The analysis was based on a large dataset of 1587 complete sets of preoperative and postoperative IOMaster 700 biometry measurements from two clinical centres, each containing

Analysis of Features Extracted from EEG Epochs by Discrete Wavelet Decomposition and Hilbert Transform for Sleep Apnea Detection.

Sleep apnea (SA) is one of the most common disorders manifesting during sleep and the electroencephalo-gram (EEG) belongs to these biomedical signals that change during apnea and hypopnea episodes. In recent years, a few publications reported approaches to the automatic classification of sleep apnea episodes based only on the EEG. The purpose of this work was to analyze statistical features extracted from the EEG epochs by combined discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and Hilbert transform (HT). Additionally, the selected most discriminative 30 features were then used in the automatic classificati

A hybrid DenseNet121-random vector functional link (RVFL) approach for plant leaf classification.

The Random Vector Functional Link (RVFL) network provides an efficient and quick method of training feedforward single hidden neural networks. It solves major disadvantages of classical neural networks, i.e. dealing with slow convergence and overfitting by exploiting fixed random weights and closed-form output computation. DenseNet121 architecture has huge potential in the artificial intelligence field and more specifically in object recognition tasks. The major drawback, however, is its inability to provide insights into its intermediate levels of analysis of classification, which is why this

Cortical networks of parkinsonian gait: a metabolic and functional connectivity study.

OBJECTIVE: Locomotion is an automated voluntary movement sustained by coordinated neural synchronization across a distributed brain network. The cerebral cortex is central for adapting the locomotion pattern to the environment and alterations of cortical network dynamics can lead to gait impairments. Gait problems are a common symptom with a still unclear pathophysiology and represent an unmet therapeutical need in Parkinson's disease. Little is known about the cortical network dynamics of locomotor control in these patients. METHODS: We studied the cortical basis of parkinsonian gait by comb

Development of a Neural Network to Detect Hepatic Steatosis in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Early identification of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is critical for risk stratification and timely intervention. Conventional noninvasive indices (fatty liver index, hepatic steatosis index, Zhejiang University index, and MASLD index) are limited by linear assumptions and moderate predictive accuracy. We aimed to develop and externally validate a neural network model for noninvasive detection of hepatic steatosis. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort of 17,465 Japanese health checkup participants (2010-2020). All clinical data were

Predicting Protein-Protein Interactions Using Sequence and Network Information via Variational Graph Autoencoder.

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play a critical role in the proteomics study, and a variety of computational algorithms have been developed to predict PPIs. Though effective, their performance is constrained by high false-positive and false-negative rates observed in PPI data. To overcome this problem, a novel PPI prediction algorithm, namely PASNVGA, is proposed in this work by combining the sequence and network information of proteins via variational graph autoencoder. To do so, PASNVGA first applies different strategies to extract the features of proteins from their sequence and network

fNIRS Evidence for Distinguishing Patients With Major Depression and Healthy Controls.

In recent years, major depressive disorder (MDD) has been shown to negatively impact physical recovery in a variety of patients. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a tool that can potentially supplement clinical interviews and mental state examinations to establish a psychiatric diagnosis and monitor treatment progress. Thirty-two subjects, including 16 patients clinically diagnosed with MDD and 16 healthy controls (HCs), participated in the study. Brain oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin (HbR) responses were recorded using a 22-channel continuous-wave fNIRS device while the

How Does iReadMore Therapy Change the Reading Network of Patients with Central Alexia?

Central alexia (CA) is an acquired reading disorder co-occurring with a generalized language deficit (aphasia). The roles of perilesional and ipsilesional tissue in recovery from poststroke aphasia are unclear. We investigated the impact of reading training (using iReadMore, a therapy app) on the connections within and between the right and left hemisphere of the reading network of patients with CA. In patients with pure alexia, iReadMore increased feedback from left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) region to the left occipital (OCC) region. We aimed to identify whether iReadMore therapy was effec

Deep neural networks show an equivalent and often superior performance to dermatologists in onychomycosis diagnosis: Automatic construction of onychomycosis datasets by region-based convolutional deep neural network.

Although there have been reports of the successful diagnosis of skin disorders using deep learning, unrealistically large clinical image datasets are required for artificial intelligence (AI) training. We created datasets of standardized nail images using a region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) trained to distinguish the nail from the background. We used R-CNN to generate training datasets of 49,567 images, which we then used to fine-tune the ResNet-152 and VGG-19 models. The validation datasets comprised 100 and 194 images from Inje University (B1 and B2 datasets, respectively), 1

Deep Learning-Based Prediction Model for the Cobb Angle in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients.

Scoliosis, characterized by spine deformity, is most common in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Manual Cobb angle measurement limitations underscore the need for automated tools. This study employed a vertebral landmark extraction method and Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) to predict scoliosis progression in 79 AIS patients. The novel intervertebral angles matrix format showcased results. The mean absolute error for the intervertebral angle progression was 1.5 degrees, while the Pearson correlation of the predicted Cobb angles was 0.86. The accuracy in classifying Cobb angles (<15°, 15-
