Dietary adequacy, feeding practices, and eating behavior of children with Down's syndrome.

The dietary adequacy, eating behavior, and feeding practices of children with Down's syndrome were studied. Half of the children obtained from their food less than the recommended allowances for food energy, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and thiamin; children under six were vulnerable to iron inadequacies. Three-fourths of the children exceeded the allowances for protein and ascorbic acid. Contrary to the belief that parents of handicapped children are permissive, parents seemed to control the food consumption patterns of their children by appropriate techniques. Weight status appeared to be compa

The impact of mating and sugar feeding on blood-feeding physiology and behavior in the arbovirus vector mosquito Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are globally distributed vectors of viruses that impact the health of hundreds of millions of people annually. Mating and blood feeding represent fundamental aspects of mosquito life history that carry important implications for vectorial capacity and for control strategies. Females transmit pathogens to vertebrate hosts and obtain essential nutrients for eggs during blood feeding. Further, because host-seeking Ae. aegypti females mate with males swarming near hosts, biological crosstalk between these behaviors could be important. Although mating influences

Biological implications of longevity in dairy cows: 1. Changes in feed intake, feeding behavior, and digestion with age.

Milk production strategies focusing on longevity and limited use of concentrate are receiving increasing attention. To evaluate such strategies, knowledge of the development with age of animal characteristics, particularly digestion, is indispensable. We therefore investigated the development of feed intake, chewing activity, and digestion in 30 lactating Brown Swiss cows (876-3,648 d old) and 12 heifers (199-778 d old). We also studied whether age effects were exhibited differently in animals selected from herds subjected for 11 yr either to a forage-only or to a forage-concentrate feeding re

Reconstituted versus dry alfalfa hay in starter feed diets of Holstein dairy calves: Effects on feed intake, feeding and chewing behavior, feed preference, and health criteria.

We investigated the effect of reconstitution of alfalfa hay on feeding and chewing behavior, sorting activity, and health status using 20 neonate Holstein male calves (3 d of age; 40.3 ± 1.30 kg of body weight) that were assigned randomly to 2 treatments, a starter feed containing either 10% dry (AH) or reconstituted alfalfa hay (RAH), each consisting of 10 calves. Alfalfa hay was reconstituted with water 24 h before feeding to achieve a theoretical dry mater (DM) content of 20%. Both starter diets had the same ingredients and nutrient compositions but differed in their DM content (90.9 vs. 66

Zinc Deficiency and Cyclic Feeding Behavior-From Animal Models to Potential Human Implications.

This narrative review synthesizes 5 decades of evidence on zinc deficiency-induced cyclic feeding in animal models, examines the underlying neurobiological mechanisms-with emphasis on recent advances in gut-brain axis signaling-and critically evaluates whether analogous periodic appetite fluctuations may occur in zinc-deficient humans. Zinc deficiency induces a distinctive cyclic feeding pattern in rodents, with food intake oscillating at an approximately 3.5-day period, as demonstrated by cosinor analysis, yet the mechanistic basis and potential human relevance of this phenomenon remain incom

Comparative Analysis of Growth and Feeding Behavior in Four Chinese Indigenous Pig Breeds.

Indigenous pig breeds in China possess distinct biological characteristics, yet their growth dynamics and feeding behaviors remain inadequately characterized. This study compared growth performance, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and feeding behavior in four Hunan indigenous pig breeds, Dongshan (DS), Longtan (LT), Pushi (PS), and Taoyuan (TY), during the fattening stage (approximately 50-90 kg, over 60 days). Automated feeding stations were used to continuously monitor body weight, feed intake, and feeding behavior over 60 days in 48 pigs (12 per breed). Linear mixed model and generalized addit

Rehydrated ground corn silage as alternative to feedlot lambs: feeding behavior and performance.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of replacing ground corn with rehydrated ground corn silage (RGCS) in high-concentrate diets on the feeding behavior and performance of feedlot lambs. Forty, non-castrated, Santa Inês male lambs (approximately four months old with an average body weight of 21 ± 2.8 kg) were randomly assigned to a completely randomized design, with five dietary treatments, each including eight replications. The treatments consisted of replacing ground corn with RGCS at levels of 0, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 g/kg on a dry matter (DM) basis. The data collection period last

Placozoan secretory cell types implicated in feeding, innate immunity and regulation of behavior.

Placozoa are millimeter-sized, flat, irregularly shaped ciliated animals that crawl on surfaces in warm oceans feeding on biofilms, which they digest externally. They stand out from other animals due to their simple body plans. They lack organs, body cavities, muscles and a nervous system and have only seven broadly defined morphological cell types, each with a unique distribution. Analyses of single cell transcriptomes of four species of placozoans revealed greater diversity of secretory cell types than evident from morphological studies, but the locations of many of these new cell types were

Bloodmeal sources and feeding behavior of anopheline mosquitoes in Bure district, northwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito bloodmeal sources determine the feeding rates, adult survival, fecundity, hatching rates, and developmental times. Only the female Anopheles mosquito takes bloodmeals from humans, birds, mammals, and other vertebrates for egg development. Studies of the host preference patterns in blood-feeding anopheline mosquitoes are crucial to determine malaria vectors. However, the human blood index, foraging ratio, and host preference index of anopheline mosquitoes are not known so far in Bure district, Ethiopia. METHODS: The origins of bloodmeals from all freshly fed and a few half

[Hunger and satiety factors in the regulation of pleasure associated with feeding behavior].

Feeding is an instinctive behavior accompanied by rewarding feeling of pleasure during obtaining and ingesting food, corresponding to the preparatory and consummatory phases of motivated behavior, respectively. Perception of this emotional state together with alternating feelings of hunger and satiety drives the feeding behavior. Because alterations of feeding behavior including either overeating or anorexia may lead to obesity and cachexia, respectively, understanding the neurochemical mechanisms of regulation of feeding pleasure may help to develop new therapies of these diseases. The dopami

Lameness Affects Cow Feeding But Not Rumination Behavior as Characterized from Sensor Data.

Using automatic sensor data, this is the first study to characterize individual cow feeding and rumination behavior simultaneously as affected by lameness. A group of mixed-parity, lactating Holstein cows were loose-housed with free access to 24 cubicles and 12 automatic feed stations. Cows were milked three times/day. Fresh feed was delivered once daily. During 24 days with effectively 22 days of data, 13,908 feed station visits and 7,697 rumination events obtained from neck-mounted accelerometers on 16 cows were analyzed. During the same period, cows were locomotion scored on four occasions

Short communication: Rumination and feeding behavior before and after calving in dairy cows.

The objectives of the current study were to describe changes in rumination and feeding behavior around calving. Rumination time, feeding time, and dry matter intake were monitored in 11 freestall-housed cows from 96 h before to 48 h after calving. Data were summarized in 2-h and 24-h periods, adjusting for calving time. Differences between baseline (96 to 24h before calving) and subsequent 24-h periods were evaluated. Compared with baseline, cows spent, on average, 63 ± 30 min/24h less time ruminating and 66 ± 16 min/24h less time feeding in the 24-h period before calving. These behaviors cont

Effect of different forage sources on performance and feeding behavior of Holstein calves.

One hundred seventy-nine Holstein male calves [44.7 kg of body weight (BW) and 8.3 d of age] participated in a series of 3 experiments to evaluate the effect of different forage sources on performance, apparent digestibility, and feeding behavior. Animals in each study were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 different dietary treatments: control (CON) calves were fed starter feed without any forage provision (this treatment was repeated in each of the 3 experiments), and the 2 other treatments consisted of the same starter feed plus a forage source: chopped alfalfa (AH) or rye-grass hay (RH) in the f

Feeding behavior and its responsiveness to naloxone differ in lean and obese sheep.

Feeding and its regulation by opioids were studied in lean sheep and sheep in the static phase of dietary obesity. Sheep were fasted 16 h and on separate days were injected IV with 0 (saline), 0.01, 0.1, 1, or 3 mg/kg naloxone 5 min before they were allowed ad lib intake for the ensuing 32 h. All sheep were in chronic zero energy balance when not fed ad lib during naloxone treatment. After 0 mg/kg naloxone, intake rate was at least twice as fast (p < 0.05) in lean than obese sheep through the first 4 h of ad lib feeding, but was similar (approximately 0.5 g/min) in both groups of sheep after 8

An anorectic agent from adipose tissue of overfed rats: effects on feeding behavior.

Parabiosis and blood-transfer studies with rodents suggest the existence of humoral factors capable of affecting energy balance. The nature and origin of these factors is undetermined. Aqueous extracts of adipose tissue from overfed rats significantly reduce food intake when administered intraperitoneally (IP) or intracerebroventricularly (ICV). We term the agent(s) responsible for this effect adipose satiety factor (ASF). A single IP dose of ASF, equivalent to 44 mg crude protein, suppresses cumulative food intake for over 12 h. ASF, prepared using a combination of adipose tissue from obese Z

Alpha 2-adrenoceptor blockade attenuates feeding behavior induced by neuropeptide Y and epinephrine.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY, 0.47 nmol) and epinephrine (28.9 nmol) evoked robust, and quantitatively similar, increments in food intake and local eating rate following administration into the third cerebral ventricle (IIIV). Whereas IIIV pretreatment with phentolamine (71 nmol), a nonselective alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist, or prazosin (9.5 nmol), a selective alpha 1-adrenoceptor antagonist, was without effect on NPY-induced feeding behavior, pretreatment with the alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine (15 nmol) dramatically attenuated the stimulatory effects of NPY or epinephrine on both food int

Early-life stages impact later feeding behavior and physiology in light-born piglets.

Low birth weight (LBW) piglets and those exposed to negative experiences early in life are at higher risk of poor development. This study aimed to investigate the potential imprinting effects of early growth rates on metabolism and feeding behavior in LBW piglets. A total of 128 piglets ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Pietrain) were selected at weaning 23.1 ± 0.37 d old (5.2 ± 0.94 kg body weight [BW]), including 69 castrated males and 59 females. At 51 d of age, 46 LBW piglets (0.98 ± 0.139 kg) were classified using a 2 × 2 factorial design based on growth rate during the suckling and nursery perio

Host-feeding behavior of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in North Dakota, 2003 to 2006.

Mosquitoes are abundant near temporary, semipermanent, and permanent water in North Dakota and are associated with human and veterinary diseases. Little is known about the feeding habits of mosquitoes as related to the transmission of arboviruses. We report on the identification of vertebrate hosts of 9 species of mosquitoes collected in 2003 to 2006. Blood meals of 1,223 from 9 mosquito species were identified to vertebrate species by PCR assays using the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Aedes dorsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culiseta inornata fed only on mammals, and Aedes vexans fed almost

Postdischarge Nutrition of Preterm Infants: Breastfeeding, Complementary Foods, Eating Behavior and Feeding Problems.

In preterm infants, the key goals of nutrition are to establish adequate growth and to contribute to appropriate neurodevelopmental outcome. In this context, the postdischarge period is crucial to establish catch-up growth and avoid wrong metabolic programming caused by overfeeding. Breastfeeding is strongly recommended, and for preterm infants the European Society for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) suggests fortifying breastmilk after discharge up to term in appropriate growing infants and up to 3 months in growth-retarded infants. If breastfeeding is not possible, post
