Chemotherapy of Babesia felis infection: efficacy of certain drugs.

The efficacy of 10 drugs was tested against Babesia felis infection in domestic cats. Primaquine phosphate administered per os or as an intramuscular injection was found to be highly effective and the obvious drug of choice when compared with conventional babesicides. The recommended dosage is 0,5 mg/kg body mass of primaquine base. Repeated treatments are well tolerated but single doses in excess of 1 mg/kg are known to cause mortality in cats.

Disseminated invasive aspergillosis caused by Aspergillus felis in a cat.

A 2-year-old male desexed Ragdoll cat with a 1-year history of sneezing and nasal discharge presented with a large subcutaneous cervical mass, identified as the right medial retropharyngeal lymph node on computed tomography (CT). A right orbital mass, destructive sino-nasal cavity disease and multiple pulmonary nodules were also identified. Aspergillus felis was cultured from the lymph node. After treatment with posaconazole and liposomal amphotericin B the lymph node enlargement and orbital mass resolved but left frontal sinus involvement and pulmonary lesions persisted despite additional cas

Molecular Detection of Chlamydia felis in Cats in Ahvaz, Iran.

Chlamydiae are obligate generally Gram-negative intracellular parasites with bacterial characteristics, including a cell wall, DNA, and RNA. They have a worldwide distribution in different animal species. Chlamydia felis (C. felis) is an important agent with zoonotic susceptibility often isolated from cats with chronic conjunctivitis. The aim of the present survey aimed to determine the molecular occurrence of C. felis in cats in Ahvaz, Iran. In this regard, a total of 152 cats (126 households and 26 feral) were included in the current study. After recording their history information, two swab

An atypical presentation of an acute gastric Helicobacter felis infection.

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram negative bacterium that has been associated with a wide variety of gastric pathologies in humans. Besides this well studied gastric pathogen, other Helicobacter spp. have been detected in a minority of patients with gastric disease. These species, also referred to as "H. heilmanii sensu lato" or "non Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter spp. (NHPH)", have a very fastidious nature which makes their in vitro isolation difficult. This group compromises several different Helicobacter species which naturally colonize the stomach of animals. In this article we present a cas

A review of bacterial pathogens in Ctenocephalides felis in New Zealand.

The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is the recognised vector of Bartonella henselae, B. clarridgeiae and Rickettsia felis. Although these Gram-negative bacteria were only described in the last decade, they are already known to cause a variety of diseases in people, particularly children and the immunosuppressed. Such diseases include cat-scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, endocarditis, bacteraemia, encephalopathy, neuroretinitis, osteomyelitis and peliosis hepatis. Although most infections in cats and dogs appear to be subclinical, recent studies have provided growing evidence that the

Antibiotic susceptibilities of Afipia felis in axenic medium and in cells.

Afipia felis, one of the putative agents of cat scratch disease (CSD), is a facultative intracellular bacterium. Although CSD is considered not to be susceptible to antibiotic therapy, sporadic case reports indicated that aminoglycosides may be effective. We determined the in vitro antibiotic susceptibilities of three A. felis strains in axenic medium and in a cell model. In axenic medium, A. felis was susceptible to imipenem, aminoglycosides, and rifampin when using either the broth dilution technique or the agar technique. When grown in HeLa cells, A. felis was susceptible to amikacin and to

The presence of Rickettsia felis in communities in the central highlands of Vietnam.

Rickettsia felis is an emerging flea-borne spotted fever pathogen that causes febrile illness in humans. In Vietnam, R. felis was detected in hospitalized patients, but there is no information on its presence in the Vietnamese community. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the presence of R. felis in humans of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. A total of 158 blood and 213 serum samples were subjected to PCR and IFAT, respectively, to detect the presence of R. felis DNA and antibodies against R. felis. PCR assays detected R. felis DNA in four out of 158 blood samples, accounting for a

A Recombinase-Aided Amplification Assay for the Detection of Chlamydia felis.

Chlamydia felis is an important zoonotic agent for humans and various animals. A recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) assay was developed for detecting C. felis. RAA can be performed in a closed tube at 39°C within 30 min. The detection limit was 10.6 copies of the C. felis plasmid DNA per reaction. No positive signals for other pathogens were detected. The coincidence rate of RAA and conventional PCR was 95.24% (20/21) and 100% (96/96) for positive and negative samples, respectively. The established RAA assay is a simple, rapid, highly sensitive, and specific method for detecting C. felis.

Cystic echinococcosis in a domestic cat (Felis catus) in Italy.

Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato is a zoonotic agent with a life cycle consisting of definitive hosts (dogs and wild carnivores), and intermediate hosts (usually ungulates). Other animals and humans may accidentally ingest eggs and contract cystic echinococcosis, acting as aberrant hosts. A 3-year-old neutered female cat was brought to a veterinary practice in Sassari (Italy) with abdominal distension. Ultrasound showed multiple intraperitoneal vesicles, which on laparotomy were found to be metacestodes of E. granulosus. Videos of the extraction of cysts are provided. Phylogenetic analysis b

Identification of Cryptosporidium felis in a cow by morphologic and molecular methods.

Apicomplexan Cryptosporidium parasites infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts. While some species are limited to a single host group, such as Cryptosporidium baileyi, which infects chickens, other species of this genus, such as C. parvum, infect a wide range of mammalian species from mice to humans. During an investigation of Cryptosporidium infection in cattle on a farm in northern Poland, we identified an infection caused by C. felis, in addition to known infections with C. muris and C. parvum. This new infection was identified based on the size of the oocysts (mean size, 4.3 +/- 0.4 microm

Morphology of subclavian artery branching patterns in cats (Felis catus).

IMPORTANCE: The subclavian artery (SB) is a crucial vascular structure that supplies the neck, thoracic wall, and forelimb. In carnivores, SB branching patterns exhibit considerable interspecific and intraspecific variation. Despite the increasing recognition of cats as companion animals, detailed studies of feline SB branching patterns remain limited. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the SB branching patterns in cats, analyze intraspecific variations, and compare these findings with those observed in other carnivores. METHODS: Silicone casts of the SBs were prepared from 35 cats (15 males

Central nervous system development of cats (Felis catus L. 1758).

The morphological similarities of vertebrates' embryonic development are used as a criterion for choosing animal models that can be used in biomedical research. This study describes the embryonic and fetal development of the domestic cat's central nervous system from 15 days after conception until birth. In total, fifty-seven samples of embryos and fetuses were carefully dissected and analyzed microscopically. The closure of the neural tube was observed between 14-15th days of gestation. The differentiation of the primordial cerebral vesicles was observed from the 17th day of gestation. On the

Rickettsia felis identified in two fatal cases of acute meningoencephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia felis has recently emerged worldwide as a cause of human illness. Typically causing mild, undifferentiated fever, it has been implicated in several cases of non-fatal neurological disease in Mexico and Sweden. Its distribution and pathogenicity in Southeast Asia is poorly understood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We retroactively tested cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or sera from 64 adult patients admitted to hospital in North Sulawesi, Indonesia with acute neurological disease. Rickettsia felis DNA was identified in the CSF of two fatal cases of meningoencephalitis using
