The authors report the implantation of a Palmaz stent in the superficial femoral artery using an approach not previously described, the peroneal artery. A 64-year-old man was admitted with extensive necrosis of the right foot. Physical examination showed a normal right femoral pulse but absence of popliteal and tibial pulses. Arteriography showed a superficial femoral artery with critical stenoses but a normal profunda artery. A classic below-knee amputation was performed. During the procedure, the muscular blood flow was considered insufficient, by clinical experience, to achieve limb healing

AIM: Conventional femoral artery cannulation with retrograde perfusion may increase the incidence of cerebral embolism in treating Stanford type A aortic dissection (STAAD). This study aimed to compare the neuroprotective effect of combined axillary-femoral artery cannulation utilizing an antegrade-retrograde perfusion strategy with femoral artery single cannulation in STAAD surgery.
METHODS: This was a two-center, retrospective cohort study including 120 patients who underwent STAAD surgery between January 2021 and January 2025. Among them, 63 patients received combined axillary-femoral arte

OBJECTIVE: Infected femoral artery pseudoaneurysms (IFAPs) are a known complication of illicit intravenous drug injection. As the opioid crisis in our country continues to worsen, we will likely see more IFAPs and algorithms for management of these patients will need to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to describe the surgical management and outcomes of patients presenting with IFAPs treated with femoral artery ligation.
METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective study of consecutive patients presenting to our institution with IFAPs associated with illicit drug injection between

Vascular complications of distal femoral fractures are rare but can have disastrous consequences if not recognised and treated promptly. We present the case of a 55-year-old woman who developed a pseudoaneurysm of the superficial femoral artery after osteosynthesis to repair a supracondylar femoral fracture. Eight weeks after surgery, swelling of the right thigh persisted and was accompanied by severe pain. Enhanced computed tomography revealed a pseudoaneurysm in the medial aspect of the affected thigh. Open surgical repair was performed by direct arterial suture. Although the true aetiology

BACKGROUND: Flush occlusions of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) often preclude endovascular interventions for femoral-popliteal lesions. Furthermore, some investigators have found poor results with angioplasty and stenting or stent-grafting of such lesions. For suitable patients with TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) C and D femoral-popliteal lesions involving a flush occlusion of the SFA, we have adopted a technique to manage this disease pattern by combining femoral endarterectomy through a single, small groin incision with distal superficial femoral-popliteal stent-grafting.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the blood supply of the femoral head is essential to guide therapeutic strategies for patients with femoral neck fractures. However, because of the limitations of conventional techniques, the precise distribution and characteristics of intraosseous arteries of the femoral head are not well displayed.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: To explore the characteristics and interconnections of the intraosseous vessel system between different areas of the femoral head and the possible blood supply compensatory mechanism after femoral neck fracture.
METHODS: The three-dimensi

Mycotic aneurysms of the common femoral artery are rare and usually occur in intravenous drug abusers who use the femoral vessels for injection. We herein describe a case of mycotic aneurysm of the common femoral artery caused by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus seeding of an atherosclerotic plaque in which the bacteria possibly originated from psoriatic skin lesions. A 67-year-old Caucasian man was admitted to the hospital after experiencing chest pain for two days. He was known to have psoriasis and coronary artery disease with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting surgery

OBJECTIVES: Over the last decade, the number of endovascular procedures performed on the superficial femoral (SFA) and popliteal arteries (PA) has significantly increased. There is no consensus on the optimal form of intervention used in this arterial segment. While some have advocated balloon angioplasty alone, others have championed either selective or primary stenting of these lesions. It is the purpose of this study to determine the efficacy and durability of primary stenting of the superficial femoral and popliteal artery.
METHODS: All patients undergoing peripheral angioplasty by a sing

The authors present an account on a gunshot wound which penetrated into the lateral side of the distal chest on the right. They describe acute treatment of severe haemorrhagic shock by suture of a lacerated with liver segment and resection of the upper pole of the right kidney. The projectile was not searched for because of the patients general serious condition. After 30 days the patient was discharged in a good condition. Shortly after discharge, i.e. cca one month after the injury, the patient developed signs of chronic ischaemia of the left lower extremity-finally claudications after 150 m

Neonatal hypernatremic dehydration (NHD) is a common complication in breastfed neonates which if not recognized early can lead to life-threatening complications. Only a few cases of NHD leading to peripheral gangrene have been reported in the literature. We report a case of a 14-day-old neonate with complaints of dyspnoea, poor oral intake, and gangrenous changes in the left leg. There was a 28% weight loss since birth due to inadequate feeding. The baby was diagnosed with severe hypernatremic dehydration with Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) stage 4 acute kidney injury requiri

BACKGROUND: Access to the femoral vessels is necessary for a wide range of vascular procedures, including treatment of thromboembolic disease, arterial grafts (i.e. bifemoral aortic bypass or infrainguinal bypass), endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (EVAR), thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The surgical technique used to access the femoral artery may be a factor in the occurrence of postoperative complications; this will be the focus of our review. We will compare the transverse surgical technique-a cut made parallel

OBJECTIVES: The effect of superficial femoral artery (SFA) occlusion on long-term patency of aortofemoral bypasses (AFBs) for aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD) was examined.
METHODS: The AIOD database was reviewed to identify risk factors for AFB failure. The status of the SFA at AFB procedure was categorised as patent; diseased treated (DT), if the SFA occlusion was intervened on concomitant to AFB; or diseased untreated (DU), if the SFA was occluded but not revascularised. Censoring hierarchies for primary patency and patent graft survival time were constructed. Data were analysed by cont

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the acute success and complication rates of combined transradial and transpedal access for femoral artery intervention.
BACKGROUND: Improved equipment and techniques have resulted in transition from transfemoral to transradial access for intervention of superficial femoral artery.
METHODS: Between 2014 and 2016, clinical and angiographic data from 145 consecutive patients with symptomatic superficial femoral stenosis, treated via primary radial access using the 6-F SheathLess Eaucath PV guiding catheter were evaluated in a pil

Different vascular accesses have been described for the delivery of a transcatheter aortic bioprosthesis. We report the use of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) as the arterial site of puncture with surgical cut-down. It may be a reasonable access alternative to the other classical routes, especially in the setting of either obese patients with elevated body mass index or in the presence of high femoral artery bifurcation. This route seems to be feasible with a low-profile risk.

Subclavian artery stenosis can cause a flow reversal-so-called steal-not only in the ipsilateral vertebral artery, but also in the internal mammary artery in patients with a history of coronary-artery bypass grafting. Subclavian artery stenosis is also associated with peripheral artery disease elsewhere. We report a novel finding of axillo-femoral bypass steal due to subclavian artery stenosis identified by vascular ultrasonography.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the durability of superficial femoral artery (SFA) stents and factors that affect stent patency.
METHODS: A retrospective assessment of 214 SFA stent procedures between 2003 and 2012 was conducted from a prospectively compiled database. Patency rates and patient outcomes were compiled from case notes and computerized records. Stent patency was confirmed by either duplex scan or clinical examination (palpable distal pulse). Survival and patency were compared across a range of factors using Kaplan-Meier plots and log-rank tests. Factors found to
