AIMS: Lower motor neuron damage to sacral roots or nerves can result in incontinence and a flaccid urinary bladder. We showed bladder reinnervation after transfer of coccygeal to sacral ventral roots, and genitofemoral nerves (L1, 2 origin) to pelvic nerves. This study assesses the feasibility of urethral and anal sphincter reinnervation using transfer of motor branches of the femoral nerve (L2-4 origin) to pudendal nerves (S1, 2 origin) that innervate the urethral and anal sphincters in a canine model.
METHODS: Sacral ventral roots were selected by their ability to stimulate bladder, urethra

We report a case of anterior thigh compartment syndrome (TCS), which occurred after a closed femoral fracture internal fixation using an intramedullary rod. A 20 ml ropivacaine hydrochloride single-injection femoral block had preceded general anaesthesia to conduct the surgical procedure. The compartment syndrome diagnosis was made the morning after surgery when the level of pain was interpreted as disproportionate to the treated lesion; in addition, compartment pressure measure had increased to 54 mmHg. A compartment fasciotomy was performed. Diagnostic delays have previously been observed an

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a severe traumatic procedure, and femoral nerve block (FNB) combined with a sciatic nerve block (SNB) is widely used in TKA. However, injury of the sciatic nerve is clinically reported. Dexmedetomidine (DEX) could reduce stress and inflammation, as well as improve pain in TKA. This study aims to observe the analgesic impact of DEX combined with FNB in TKA.
METHODS: Eighty-eight patients undergoing TKA were included and randomly divided into two groups: DF group (FNB combined with DEX 0.6μg/kg before surgery, followed by DEX 0.2-0.4μg/kg/h until art

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The transpsoas lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) technique is an effective alternative to traditional anterior and posterior approaches to the lumbar spine; however, nerve injuries are the most reported postoperative complication. Commonly used strategies to avoid nerve injury (eg, limiting retraction duration) have not been effective in detecting or preventing femoral nerve injuries.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of emerging intraoperative femoral nerve monitoring techniques and the importance of employing prompt surgical countermeasures when degraded femoral ner

A forty-one-year-old man who, sought evaluation for a sudden hip flexion contracture and groin pain with a history of mechanical mitral valve replacement, had been misdiagnosed and treated as having lumbar discopathy for two days. This patient finally was diagnosed with compressive femoral neuropathy due to warfarin-induced retroperitoneal hematoma and successfully managed nonoperatively. This case is reported in order to draw attention to this rare presentation.

OBJECTIVE: Femoral nerve block (FNB) is increasingly used as an analgesic modality in patients with femoral fracture both in the emergency department and preoperatively. We describe an occurrence of unexpected dislocation of the fracture after FNB.
CASE REPORT: An FNB was administered to treat pain in a 48-year-old patient with metastatic breast carcinoma and multiple bone metastases. A diagnostic FNB with 20 mL of 0.25% levobupivacaine resulted in analgesia but also in unexpected gross deformity in the proximal right femur. An x-ray revealed a pathologic fracture of the proximal third femur

BACKGROUND: This study stems from an encounter with a phrenic nerve paralysis in a patient following doxycycline sclerotherapy for treatment of chylous fistula. The purpose of this study is to identify possible histologic evidence of doxycycline-induced nerve injury.
METHODS: The femoral nerves of CD rats were used as the in vivo animal model. The nerves were exposed to varying concentrations doxycycline and normal saline was the control. The nerves were studied at several time intervals using two different staining techniques.
RESULTS: The results suggest that topical doxycycline induces ti

Seventy-eight traumatic neuropathies were seen in 94 patients with femoral nerve lesions; 54 of these were operated on because of persistent complete functional loss and/or pain. The most common mechanism of injury to the femoral nerve was iatrogenic due to inguinal herniorrhaphy, total hip replacement, intraabdominal vascular or gynecological operation, and, less commonly, appendectomy, lumbar sympathectomy, and laparoscopic procedures. Femoral nerve injuries also resulted from penetrating gunshot and stab wounds, laceration by glass, and stretch/contusive injuries associated with pelvic frac

The retroperitoneal part of the normal femoral nerve has been studied in 34 healthy subjects with ultrasound (US) to evaluate its course, thickness and anteroposterior diameter. A correlative cadaver study was also undertaken; a cadaver was scanned during dissection, and 12 cadavers were studied macroscopically to evaluate the length of the retroperitoneal part of the nerve. Because the femoral nerve could be well seen in its course in the retroperitoneum with US, it is suggested in this study which--to the authors' knowledge--is the first report on imaging of the femoral nerve, that sonograph

Two cases of traumatic rupture of the iliacus muscle are reported. The clinical picture of this condition is characterized by pain in the groin, a tender mass in the iliac fossa, flexion contracture of the hip, and a femoral nerve palsy. Presence of a bleeding tendency should be investigated. Operative treatment is recommended for large hematomas.

This case study focuses on the atypical nerve contributions and branching patterns of the lumbar plexus in two human body donors at Midwestern University. It discusses their implications for pathology and surgical outcomes. Variations were identified in the anterior rami contributions and branching patterns of the lumbar plexus in both donors, predominantly in the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). While the typical contributions of LFCN include L2 and L3 spinal cord levels, the case donors received contributions only from L2 or from L1-L3 levels, with the nerves combining and separating

Postoperative femoral nerve palsy (FNP) is a rare complication associated with urologic surgery. Inappropriate use of retractors, use of lithotomy position, and prolonged surgery that lead to the femoral nerve compression have been reported as risk factors for FNP. Here, we report two cases of FNP after pelvic surgery. Case 1: A 47-year-old woman underwent ureterocystoneostomy for a giant ureterocele. On the first postoperative day, she developed muscle weakness and paresthesia in the left lower leg. An orthopedic surgeon diagnosed her with FNP associated with the surgery. Case 2: An 82-year-o

Paralysis of the femoral nerve secondary to iliopsoas haematoma is a rare post-traumatic complication. Because of the large differential diagnosis, a high level of suspicion is required for its early recognition. Treatment modalities are controversial due to the rarity of this entity. An 18-year-old student presented with complete paralysis of the knee extensors and a sensory deficit on the anterior side of the thigh 5 weeks after a sport accident. MRI of the lesser pelvis showed an iliopsoas haematoma. Surgical decompression was performed and recovery was complete at 6 months of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is useful in surgery involving the anterolateral thigh. We investigated the accuracy of ultrasound compared with anatomical landmarks in identifying the LFCN in human cadavers and volunteers.
METHODS: Twenty cadavers were examined. A needle was inserted targeting the LFCN with ultrasound guidance and green dye was injected. A second needle was inserted using anatomical landmarks. The LFCN was identified by dissection, and coloring of the LFCN and needle positions were evaluated. A volunteer study with 10 individuals was perf

PURPOSE: Entubulization is a well known method of nerve repair for defects too large to be reconstructed by direct suturing without tension. Vein grafts and alloplastic tubes have been used for entubulization in peripheral and cranial nerves, but the mechanism by which they promote healing is poorly understood. The overall hypothesis of this laboratory is that nerve growth factor (NGF) plays an important role in nerve regeneration after entubulization with a vein graft. The purpose of this pilot study was to localize NGF protein expression in the rat femoral vein.

Unilateral or bilateral femoral nerve functional deficiency deficit occurs as a rare iatrogenic complication of gynaecological abdominal or vaginal surgery. Self-retaining abdominal retractors, that exert a constant pressure on the femoral nerve during the operation, are the most frequent cause. This situation occurs especially, if retractors of unsuitable size are used on very slender patients with thin abdominal walls. The favourable prognosis of the femoral nerve sensory and motor deficiencies can be complicated by damage to the knee joint resulting from leg muscle paresis. A personal obser

Isolated posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN) entrapment has only rarely been described in the literature and never documented electrophysiologically. We report an unusual occurrence of such an injury and use somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) to explore the extent of the lesion. A 40-year-old woman had localized numbness of the right posterior thigh after a left putamenal hemorrhage four years before this study. She made a complete recovery from her stroke within four months; however, she continued to experience decreased sensation in the right posterior thigh. Normal sural and perone

BACKGROUND: The importance of regional anesthesia techniques is increasing as part of multimodal analgesia strategies for managing postoperative pain in pediatric hip and femur surgeries.
CASE PRESENTATION: We aim to present two cases, aged 10 years and 18 months, scheduled for surgery due to femoral neck fractures. As part of multimodal pain management, ultrasound-guided PENG + LFCN blocks were performed in both cases. Postoperative pain was assessed using VAS and FLACC scales.
CONCLUSIONS: Our observations in these two cases suggest that the combined administration of PENG and LFCN blocks
