Design of saccharide based organic binder for low-grade iron ore pelletization using atomistic simulations and machine learning methods.

Inorganic binders like bentonite, used for pelletization of low-grade iron ore, generate iron ore slimes with comparatively high silica and alumina content necessitating extra steps for their removal during iron making process. This demands the usage of organic binders as full or partial replacement of bentonite for iron ore pelletization. In this work, adsorption of organic binders with saccharides skeleton and -H, -OH, -CH2OH and -CH2CH2OH as polar substituents, on goethite surface was studied using density functional theory, molecular dynamics and machine learning. It was observed that adso

New insights on the Jacobsite mineral from Bahia and related synthetic manganese-ferrite nanoparticles.

Jacobsite is a relatively rare mineral of composition MnFe2O4, found in Urandi (Bahia State) in Brazil. It is also a common species in the deep-sea manganese nodules, attracting the interest of many mineral-extracting companies. Because of its spinel constitution similar to magnetite, Jacobsite is commonly called a manganese-ferrite. However, the manganese/iron content may vary substantially according to its origin, demanding specific studies in each case. The Jacobsite mineral inspired our laboratory synthesis of the analogous manganese ferrite nanoparticles. The direct synthesis by the copre

Facet-dependent electron transfer induces distinct arsenic reallocations on hematite.

The interfacial electron transfer (ET) between electron shuttling compounds and iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides plays a crucial role in the reductive dissolution of Fe minerals and the fate of surface-bound arsenic (As). However, the impact of exposed facets of highly crystalline hematite on reductive dissolution and As immobilization is poorly understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the interfacial processes of the electron shuttling compound cysteine (Cys) on various facets of hematite and the reallocations of surface-bound As(III) or As(V) on the respective surfaces. Our results d

Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy Definition of Peroxy Intermediates in Catechol Dioxygenases: Factors that Determine Extra- versus Intradiol Cleavage.

The extradiol dioxygenases (EDOs) and intradiol dioxygenases (IDOs) are nonheme iron enzymes that catalyze the oxidative aromatic ring cleavage of catechol substrates, playing an essential role in the carbon cycle. The EDOs and IDOs utilize very different FeII and FeIII active sites to catalyze the regiospecificity in their catechol ring cleavage products. The factors governing this difference in cleavage have remained undefined. The EDO homoprotocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase (HPCD) and IDO protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase (PCD) provide an opportunity to understand this selectivity, as key O2 inte

Degradation of bisphenol A by persulfate activation of MoS2 composite iron tailings.

In this paper, molybdenum disulfide was grown on the surface of iron-containing tailings by hydrothermal method, and a series of highly efficient activated persulfate (PMS) iron-based catalysts were successfully prepared. The results show that in the CTM 1-200/PMS system, the additional ratio of tailings and the hydrothermal temperature have important effects on the catalyst. The catalyst prepared under the conditions of CT:MoS2 (molar ratio 1:1) and hydrothermal temperature of 200 °C (CTM 1-200) had the best degradation effect on BPA, and the degradation effect was increased by four times. Low intensity magnetic separation of vivianite induced by iron reduction on the surface layer of Fe(III)[Fe(0)] iron scrap.

Phosphorus (P) recovery through vivianite, which can be found in activated sludge, surplus sludge and digested sludge in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), is a cutting-edge and efficient technology in recent years. However, how to generate and separate vivianite in an effective and economical way with natural iron oxide mineral was still the bottleneck to limit its application. Therefore, in this study, the P recovery efficiency (EP) and vivianite recovery efficiency (EV) of three kinds of iron oxides were investigated. We found that the EP of Akaganeite was 1.83 times and 4.88 times hi

Secondary Coordination Sphere Influences the Formation of Fe(III)-O or Fe(III)-OH in Nitrite Reduction: A Synthetic and Computational Study.

The reduction of nitrite (NO2-) to generate nitric oxide (NO) is a significant area of research due to their roles in the global nitrogen cycle. Here, we describe various modifications of the tris(5-cyclohexyliminopyrrol-2-ylmethyl)amine H3[N(piR)3] ligand where the steric bulk and acidity of the secondary coordination sphere were explored in the non-heme iron system for nitrite reduction. The cyclohexyl and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl variants of the ligand were used to probe the mechanism of nitrite reduction. While previously stoichiometric addition of nitrite to the iron(II)-species generated an

Improved biohydrogen evolution through calcium ferrite nanoparticles assisted dark fermentation.

Dark fermentation (DF) is a green hydrogen (H2) production process, but it is far below the theoretical H2 yield. In this study, calcium ferrite nanoparticles (CaFe2O4 NPs) were produced to augment H2 yield via DF. The highest H2 yield of 250.1 ± 6.5 mL/g glucose was achieved at 100 mg/L CaFe2O4 NPs. Furtherincreasein CaFe2O4 NPs above 100 mg/L, such as 600 mg/L, would slightly lower H2 yield to 208.6 ± 2.6 mL/g glucose. The CaFe2O4 NPs in DF system released calcium and iron ions, promoting granular sludge formation andDF microbial activity. Soluble metabolites revealed that butyric acid was r

Quantifying sulfidization and non-sulfidization in long-term in-situ microbial colonized As(V)-ferrihydrite coated sand columns: Insights into As mobility.

Sulfide-induced reduction (sulfidization) of arsenic (As)-bearing Fe(III) (oxyhydro)oxides may lead to As mobilization in aquifer systems. However, little is known about the relative contributions of sulfidization and non-sulfidization of Fe(III) (oxyhydro)oxides reduction to As mobilization. To address this issue, high As groundwater with low sulfide (LS) and high sulfide (HS) concentrations were pumped through As(V)-bearing ferrihydrite-coated sand columns (LS-column and HS-column, respectively) being settled within wells in the western Hetao Basin, China. Enhanced phosphate removal from wastewater by using in situ generated fresh trivalent Fe composition through the interaction of Fe(II) on CaCO3.

Excessive existences of nutrients such as phosphate in the aqueous environment remain as a heavy concern although many researches have been reported for dealing with their removal. Based on the understanding toward the interactions of Fe compounds with phosphate and carbonate from many available researches, we designed a very simple and efficient approach for phosphate removal by using in situ generated fresh trivalent Fe composition through the interaction of Fe(II) as FeSO4 on CaCO3. Addition and agitation of Fe(II) and CaCO3 simultaneously to phosphate solution allowed an amorphous Fe(III)-

Molecular Identification of Cr(VI) Removal Mechanism on Vivianite Surface.

Experimental and theoretical studies were conducted to identify the molecular-scale reaction mechanism for Cr(VI) removal by a ferrous phosphate mineral, vivianite. The surface-normalized rate constant for Cr(VI) removal in a vivianite suspension at pH 7 was higher than those obtained for other Fe(II)-containing minerals (i.e., magnetite and pyrite). The highest rate constant was obtained at pH 5, which was 35- and 264-times higher than those obtained at pH 7 and 9, respectively, indicating the dramatic acceleration of removal kinetics with decreasing pH of suspension. The X-ray photoelectron

A new spectrophotometric method for measuring ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity: an innovative approach.

Ferroxidases are enzymes that participate in the iron metabolism of different organisms. They catalyze the oxidation of ferrous iron, Fe2⁺, into ferric iron, Fe3⁺, which is essential in iron homeostasis and physiological functioning. The present study describes a novel spectrophotometric method of serum ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity. This method is easy to perform; it is also sensitive, specific, and rapid. In this method, ferrous ions are used as a substrate for the enzyme, with either salicylic acid or sulfosalicylic acid being taken as a chromogenic compound. These chromogens easily fo

Iron Vacancy Accelerates Fe(II)-Induced Anoxic As(III) Oxidation Coupled to Iron Reduction.

Chemical oxidation of As(III) by iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides has been proposed to occur under anoxic conditions and may play an important role in stabilization and detoxification of As in subsurface environments. However, this reaction remains controversial due to lack of direct evidence and poorly understood mechanisms. In this study, we show that As(III) oxidation can be facilitated by Fe oxyhydroxides (i.e., goethite) under anoxic conditions coupled with the reduction of structural Fe(III). An excellent electron balance between As(V) production and Fe(III) reduction is obtained. The formation o

Speciation analysis and formation mechanism of iron-phosphorus compounds during chemical phosphorus removal process.

Iron (Fe) salt was applied extensively to remove phosphorus (P) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Exploring the formation mechanism of iron-phosphorus compounds (FePs) during the chemical P removal (CPR) process is beneficial to P recovery. In this study, the performance of P removal, FePs speciation analysis and the kinetics of P removal under different conditions (pH, Fe/P molar ratio (Fe/Pmol), type of Fe salt, dissolved organic matters) were comprehensively investigated. More than 95% of P was removed under the optimal conditions with pH = 4.7, Fe/Pmol = 2, FeCl3 or polymeric ferric

Evolution of soil organic matter pools during Martian regolith terraforming, with a focus on organo-Fe (oxyhydr)oxide interactions.

The poor fertility of Martian regolith, due to its lack of organic matter (OM) and nitrogen (N), limits its suitability as a plant substrate. While compost amendment enhances short-term fertility, the mechanisms underlying long-term OM stabilization, particularly through interactions with iron (Fe) minerals, remain poorly understood. This study explores OM fractionation and Fe mineral transformations in Mojave Mars Simulant (MMS-1), both pure (R100) and amended with compost (R70C30), across two consecutive cropping cycles (potato followed by Vicia faba). Following Vicia faba cultivation, total

Gallium and germanium leaching from jarosite cake by organic acid: a combined experimental and DFT approach.

Hydrometallurgical zinc plant residues are recognized as a significant environmental hazard due to the potential for heavy metals and acids to dissolve upon exposure to rainwater. This process allows contaminants to infiltrate soil and groundwater, posing a threat to aquatic systems and ecosystems. To address these environmental concerns, a hydrometallurgical leaching process has been developed for the non-toxic co-treatment of jarosite cake (JC), to prevent pollution while enabling the efficient extraction of valuable metals. In this study, an innovative approach for the leaching of gallium (
