In this work, the electrochemical properties of the leached sludge, magnetite and zinc ferrite were studied. Acetic acid was used as a leaching reagent because, in recent years, there has been a surge of interest in using zinc-containing materials as photocatalysts, with acetic acid finding application in their preparation. Various methodological approaches were used, but the best results were achieved with a combination of 1-3 h leaching in 0.01 M acetic acid with a solid/liquid ratio of 500. In this arrangement, zincite was almost completely removed from the sludge, while zinc ferrite and ma

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine risk factors for iv iron infusion-related reactions (IRR), and identify strategies for iron repletion after IRR.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients treated in the classical hematology clinic at Yale Cancer Center (n = 330 consecutive patients) from 2016 to 2021, who received iv ferumoxytol (60.3%), iron sucrose (14.8%), or iron dextran (10.9%).
RESULTS: The iv iron IRR was noted in 58 (17.6%) patients, 62.1% of whom had previously tolerated iv iron. The severity of IRR was mild in 22, moderate in 23, and severe in 11 patients. Mo

In this work, we developed a novel magnetic bimetallic Al/Fe (oxyhydr)oxide adsorbent through a facile and cost-effective method and explored its potential to adsorb fluoride in water. Its synthesis involved corrosion of natural magnetite in aluminium chloride solution, followed by titration with NaOH solution for in-situ synthesis of Al/Fe (oxyhydr)oxide-coated magnetite (Mag@Al2Fe). Characterization data indicated a uniform coating of Al/Fe (oxyhydr)oxide on magnetite, and the resulting composite possessed large specific surface area (∼90 m2/g) and good magnetic property. In batch adsorption

Nanoparticulate magnetite is found in many natural and engineered environments. This study characterized the reactivity of this material toward carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Particle diameter plays an important role, with nominal (9 nm) magnetite suspensions exhibiting greater reactivity on both mass (k(m)) and surface area normalized (k(SA)) bases than (80 nm) magnetite suspensions. For the (9 nm) suspension, the aggregation state of the particles affects the measured km values. At 0.001 M ionic strength and pH 7, k(m) (=0.052-0.139 L g(-1) h(-1)) was as much as seven times larger than at 1 M

Neurogenesis is the process by which new brain cells are formed. This crucial event emerges during embryonic life and proceeds in adulthood, and it could be influenced by environmental pollution. Non-combustion-derived magnetite represents a portion of the coarse particulate matter (PM) contributing to air and water pollution in urban settings. Studies on humans have reported that magnetite and other iron oxides have significant damaging effects at a central level, where these particles accumulate and promote oxidative stress. Similarly, magnetite nanoparticles can cross the placenta and damag

This study designed a composite material with internal synergistic effects among multiple components to achieve highly selective adsorption of Cu (II). Through controlled synthesis, the Fe3O4/MnO2(3 1 0)/ZIF-67 composite was successfully fabricated, leading to significant improvement in adsorption selectivity, capacity, and adsorption rate. The experimental results showed that the composite is of outstanding selectivity in the adsorption of Cu (II), with a partition coefficient K of Cu (II) that was 2.2-5.3 times higher than that of other coexisting ions. Moreover, the composite exhibited a re

The oxidation of aqueous arsenite (As(III)) by As(III)-oxidizing bacteria is known to attenuate the mobilization and toxicity of arsenic, and is regarded as potential method for As(III)-pollution remediation. However, during the interactions between As(III)-oxidizing bacteria and different As(III)-adsorbed soil Fe-minerals, the oxidation and partitioning of solid-phase As(III), as well as the controlling mechanisms, remain unclear. In this study, we therefore incubated three As(III)-adsorbed Fe-minerals with a typical As(III)-oxidizing bacteria (Pseudomonas sp. HN-1) at different pH conditions

The neutralization treatment of acid mine drainage involves the oxidation of Fe(II), but little is known about the effects of co-existing minerals on the oxidation and hydrolysis of Fe(II) to iron oxides. Here we investigated the transformation of fresh and heated Fe(II) oxidation coprecipitates, which were synthesized in the presence and the absence of five co-existing minerals (montmorillonite, kaolin, quartz (SiO2), aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3)). In the FeSO4 system with montmorillonite or kaolin, the formation of lepidocrocite was inhibited with the increase of cla

Iron-reducing conditions in subsurface environments promote dechlorination reactions via both biotic and abiotic pathways, the latter often mediated via biologically activated minerals formed by dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB). Here we report the major products and pathways associated with the abiotic transformation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by nanoscale biogenic magnetite/maghemite particles produced by the DIRB Geobacter metallireducens. Product formation and free radical/carbene trapping studies indicate that CT transformation occurs via three parallel pathways. The first pat

A significant challenge in nanoscience is the unpredictable translation of activity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from chemical to biological environments; this is the result of the complexity of biological regulatory mechanisms, antioxidant defenses, and interactions with cellular components (enzymes, membranes, etc.). The paper studies bioeffects of magnetically-controlled ROS-inducing compounds: triple composite Fe₃O₄-HA-MOF and its components (Fe₃O₄-MOF, HA, and MOF), where Fe₃O₄, HA, and MOF represent magnetite, humic acids, and metal-organic framework MIL-88B. Enzyme immobilization in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the stability and reusability of biocatalysts. However, maintaining high enzymatic activity, especially in nonaqueous media, remains a challenge. Herein, we report a facile one-pot in situ encapsulation strategy to coincorporate Fe3O4 nanoparticles and lipase within the cavities of NKMOF-101. The synthesized Fe3O4/lip@NKMOF-101-Ni composite was thoroughly characterized, which confirmed the successful encapsulation of both components. The incorporated Fe3O4 nanoparticles not only endowed the

Intravenous iron has become a major component of the therapeutic armamentarium for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. The earliest formulations were associated with unacceptable toxicity. Newer formulations, with complex carbohydrate cores that bind elemental iron more tightly, allow the administration of full therapeutic doses in 15 to 60 minutes. Nonetheless, a folklore of danger, fueled by earlier formulations no longer available, continues to foment caution. Complement-mediated minor infusion reactions, referred to as complement activation-related pseudo-allergy, resolve without t

Macrophages comprise a significant portion of the immune cell compartment within tumors and are known contributors to tumor pathology; however, cancer immunotherapies targeting these cells are not clinically available. The iron oxide nanoparticle, ferumoxytol (FH), may be utilized as a nanophore for drug delivery to tumor-associated macrophages. We have demonstrated that a vaccine adjuvant, monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA), can be stably captured within the carbohydrate shell of ferumoxytol without chemical modification of either the drug or the nanophore. This drug-nanoparticle combination (FH-M

The characteristics and mechanism of phosphate adsorption onto magnetite, hematite and goethite were comparatively studied, and the effects of magnetite, hematite and goethite amendment and capping on endogenous phosphorus (P) liberation from sediment into overlying water (OW) were comparatively investigated. The adsorption of phosphate onto magnetite, hematite and goethite mainly obeyed the inner-sphere complexation mechanism, and the phosphate adsorption capacity decreased in the order of magnetite > goethite > hematite. The magnetite, hematite and goethite amendment all can decrease the ris

INTRODUCTION: Placental function is vitally important, but placental assessment is limited by current imaging methods in vivo. The goal of this study is to determine if ferumoxytol-enhanced MR studies might be used to depict placental structure during pregnancy.
METHODS: Ten pregnant women were referred for MRI evaluation of abnormal placentation. The study group was composed five of these patients whose placentas were normal at pathology. MR studies consisted of pre-contrast SSFSE (single-shot fast spin-echo), SSFP (steady-state free procession), diffusion, and ferumoxytol-enhanced acquisiti

Removal of chromium(III) or (VI) from aqueous solution was achieved using Fe3O4, and MnFe2O4 nanomaterials. The nanomaterials were synthesized using a precipitation method and characterized using XRD. The size of the nanomaterials was determined to be 22.4±0.9 nm (Fe3O4) and 15.5±0.5 nm (MnFe2O4). The optimal binding pH for chromium(III) and chromium(VI) were pH 6 and pH 3. Isotherm studies were performed, under light and dark conditions, to determine the capacity of the nanomaterials. The capacities for the light studies with MnFe2O4 and Fe3O4 were determined to be 7.189 and 10.63 mg/g, respe

Magnetic nanoparticles offer many exciting possibilities in biomedicine, from cell imaging to cancer treatment. One of the currently researched nanoparticles are magnetosomes, magnetite nanoparticles of high chemical purity synthesized by magnetotactic bacteria. Despite their therapeutic potential, very little is known about their degradation in human cells, and even less so of their degradation within tumours. In an effort to explore the potential of magnetosomes for cancer treatment, we have explored their degradation process in a 3D human lung carcinoma model at the subcellular level and wi

This report describes the preparation and characterization of synthetic ferritin-like particles produced by precipitation of magnetite from a mixture of ferrous and ferric ions in the presence of dextran. The 3-nm diameter particles, containing magnetite cores surrounded by chemisorbed dextran, had a magnetization of 46.7 emu/g of iron with Mössbauer quadrupole splitting of 2 delta = 0.76 mm/s. The application of these particles as a laboratory reagent for isolation of Legionella from other water bacteria was successfully tested. A 400-fold enrichment for Legionella was obtained.

Marine chemical sedimentary deposits known as Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) archive Archean ocean chemistry and, potentially, signs of ancient microbial life. BIFs contain a diversity of iron- and silica-rich minerals in disequilibrium, and thus many interpretations of these phases suggest they formed secondarily during early diagenetic processes. One such hypothesis posits that the early diagenetic microbial respiration of primary iron(III) oxides in BIFs resulted in the formation of other iron phases, including the iron-rich silicates, carbonates, and magnetite common in BIF assemblages. Iron oxides play an important role in regulating global biogeochemical cycles, yet how their physicochemical properties influence community structure, function, and assembly remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of four representative iron oxides-ferrihydrite (Fh), goethite (Gt), haematite (Ht), and magnetite (Mt)-serving as terminal electron acceptors on microbial communities enriched from activated sludge. Metagenomic profiling revealed mineral-dependent divergence in community composition and functional potential. The communities developed on amorphous Fh demonstrated
