Cholera in Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Fetal, Neonatal, and Maternal Mortality.

BACKGROUND: Maternal infection with cholera may negatively affect pregnancy outcomes. The objective of this research is to systematically review the literature and determine the risk of fetal, neonatal and maternal death associated with cholera during pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medline, Global Health Library, and Cochrane Library databases were searched using the key terms cholera and pregnancy for articles published in any language and at any time before August 2013 to quantitatively summarize estimates of fetal, maternal, and neonatal mortality. 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were ca

Impact of fetal growth restriction on mortality and morbidity in a very preterm birth cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of being small for gestational age (SGA) on very preterm mortality and morbidity rates by using different birthweight percentile thresholds and whether these effects differ by the cause of the preterm birth. STUDY DESIGN: The study included singletons and twins alive at onset of labor between 24 and 31 weeks of gestation without congenital anomalies from the Models of Organising Access to Intensive Care for very preterm births very preterm cohort in 10 European regions in 2003 (n = 4525). Outcomes were mortality, intraventricular hemorrhage grade III and IV, cy

Uses of the 1980 National Natality and Fetal Mortality Surveys for the assessment of obstetric technologies.

Because of the multipurpose utility of followback surveys, six Public Health Service (PHS) agencies including the Bureau of Health Care and Delivery Assistance (BHCDA) financially assisted the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which conducted the 1980 National Natality Survey (NNS) and 1980 National Fetal Mortality Survey (NFMS). These are called "followback" surveys because NCHS uses mail questionnaires and telephone to follow back informants (mothers, hospitals, and attendants at delivery) and medical sources of radiation named by informants, identified on Certificates of Live Bi

Impact of Maternal-Fetal Environment on Mortality in Children With Single Ventricle Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND Children with single ventricle heart disease have significant morbidity and mortality. The maternal-fetal environment (MFE) may adversely impact outcomes after neonatal cardiac surgery. We hypothesized that impaired MFE would be associated with an increased risk of death after stage 1 Norwood reconstruction. METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a retrospective cohort study of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (and anatomic variants) who underwent stage 1 Norwood reconstruction between 2008 and 2018. Impaired MFE was defined as maternal gestational hypertension, preeclampsia,

Investigating the Decline of Fetal and Infant Mortality Rates in Alaska During 2010 and 2011.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. infant mortality rate has been steadily declining since 2007. Although the downward trend has been notable in Alaska since 2006 when the rate was 6.9 infant deaths per 1000 live births, a dramatic drop in infant mortality occurred in 2010 and 2011 when the infant mortality rate fell to 3.8 infant deaths per 1000 live births during both years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the sudden decrease in fetal and infant mortality rates (FIMR) using the perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) method, an approach that has not been used previously in Alaska. METHODS: The st

Factors associated with fetal mortality in the triethnic population in texas, 1993 through 1995.

We examined the underlying causes of fetal deaths reported for 1993 through 1995 in relation to the mother's ethnicity, reproductive history, and medical factors listed on birth and fetal death certificates. The overall fetal mortality rate (FMR) was 6.3 per 1000 live births plus fetal deaths, and 5.6, 5.9, and 9.8 per 1000, respectively in pregnancies of white, hispanic, and black women. Preterm birth (low birth weight) was a major predictor (or consequence) of fetal death, and extremes of maternal age, increased parity, and plural pregnancies were also associated with increased FMRs, especia

Fetal and neonatal mortality: a matter of care? Report of a survey in Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles.

A detailed clinicopathological analysis of 223 consecutive fetal and neonatal deaths was carried out in Curaçao during 1984 and 1985; this included careful histological examination of 210 infants (94%). The crude death rate was 34.2 per 1000 total births. Malformation was the principal cause of death in 28 cases, antepartum haemorrhage in 19, hypertension in 25, and asphyxia in 35. Death was caused by problems of preterm birth in 68 cases. No specific cause could be found for 34 deaths. Improvement in the quality of obstetric care might substantially reduce both fetal and neonatal death rates.

Fetal growth and perinatal mortality in twin pregnancy--effect of sick leave and hospitalization.

Fetal growth, birth weight specific mortality rates and effect of sick leave or hospitalization on the fetal growth were investigated in a material of 476 twin pregnancies managed at University Central Hospital of Turku in years 1970-81. Birth weights of twin babies at any gestational age were slightly but not significantly higher than in earlier materials. When compared to growth curve of singleton fetuses, the growth rate of both twins is equal to singletons up to 30th week of pregnancy, being thereafter slower than in singleton pregnancies. Although duration of sick leave and hospitalizatio
