Massive fibro-osseous lesions of the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses are rare. If left untreated, these lesions can produce chronic infection, orbital complications, and/or intracranial events. In the past, resection of these lesions has usually been subtotal and a risk of damage to intracranial structures existed, particularly to the dura, due to poor exposure, and a high recurrence rate was also present. We have treated eight such lesions with a combined craniofacial approach for total resection with resolution of symptoms, without recurrence, and without occurrence of cerebrospinal fluid leak

Benign fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial region are a diverse group of entities with overlapping histologic characteristics. One of these fibro-osseous lesions is ossifying fibroma and it is seen rarely in the head and neck region. Only a few cases of temporal bone involvement were reported in the literature. Patients with ossifying fibroma located in the temporal bone may have the following complaints: conductive hearing loss, swelling, localized pain, headache, and ear discharge. The lesion should be removed surgically and obtaining negative surgical margins is crucial to prevent any

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a fibro-osseous lesion or non-odontogenic tumour that affects craniofacial bones. These lesions are included in the spectrum of fibro-osseous lesions arising from periodontal ligament cells, which can deposit combination of cementum and bone surrounded by fibrous tissue. It clinically, macroscopically and radiologically resembles complex composite odontome and can be differentiated only on the basis of histopathology. They usually occur solitarily as a painless and expansile spherical or ovoid jawbone mass that may displace the roots of adjacent teeth. They p

Currently, central cemento-ossifying fibroma is classified by the World Health Organization as a primary bone-forming tumor of the jaws. However, histopathologically, it is often indistinguishable from cemento-osseous dysplasias in that it forms osteoid and cementicles (cementum droplets) in varying proportions. It is believed that pluripotent cells within the periodontal membrane can be stimulated to produce either osteoid or woven bone and cementicles when stimulated. If this is true, cemento-ossifying fibroma would be better classified as a primary odontogenic neoplasm arising from the peri

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion typically associated with the jaw, paranasal region, or orbit. However, JPOF may also originate from the skull base and locally invade the cranium. In published reports, intracranial JPOFs constitute only a small percentage of cases, and therefore it is not known whether more aggressive behavior typifies this distinct population of JPOFs compared with those in other locations. Nevertheless, JPOF histopathology is characterized by a number of active processes, including cystic transformation, that may precipitate vi

Peripheral ossifying fibroma is a benign neoplasm that usuallydevelops from gingiva, presenting as an exophytic smooth surfaced pink or red nodular mass that is sessile or is less frequently seen on a pedicle. From the Indian perspective, it is usually noticed in 5th-6th decades of life with female predilection. Microscopically, the tumour shows stratified squamous epithelium and highly cellular fibrous stroma, sparse endothelial proliferation with fibroblasts and dystrophic calcifications. It has to be differentiated histopathologically from pyogenic granuloma, fibroma, peripheral giant cell

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign fibro-osseous lesion that usually affects mandible and maxillary bone. Their localisation to paranasal sinus and skull base is uncommon.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We report a huge recurrence of ossifying fibroma of the ethmoid paranasal sinus involving the skull base.
CASE REPORT: Ten years after the removal of ossifying of the ethmoid 34 year old man presented headache with diplopia. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imagery (MRI) showed a recurrent tumour witch extended to the nasal cavity, the sphenoid and the posterior ethmoid sin

In humans and animals, ossifying fibroma is a benign neoplasm that most frequently affects the mandible, often resulting in cosmetic deformities and malocclusion. It is considered rare in animals and most frequently affects young horses. A surgical biopsy of a solitary mass located beneath the gingiva in the right maxillary region, which had overgrown teeth and expanded the adjacent hard palate from a 6-year-old miniature Rex rabbit was submitted for light microscopic examination. The submitted incisional biopsy specimen was pale pink, firm, and nodular. Histopathologically, the neoplasm was c

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology1989eng
Clinical, radiographic and microscopic features of 8 ossifying fibromas diagnosed in 7 patients and measuring more than 8 cm in greatest diameter, were reviewed. The tumors occurred in both juvenile and middle aged patients and all lesions in women involved the maxilla. The abundance of fibrous connective tissue and resorption of mineralized deposits are indicative of altered cellular differentiation and proliferative activities in large ossifying fibromas. Focal areas of aneurysmal bone cyst formation were identified in the majority of lesions.

Sixty-four cases of neoplastic benign fibro-osseous lesions are presented, with clinical and radiographic follow-up in 23 instances. A marked predilection for female patients was observed, with the majority or cases arising in the molar-premolar region of the mandible. Radiographically, these neoplasms are well demarcated and may be radiolucent, radiolucent with central opacification (target appearance), or multilocular radiolucent. A benign fibro-osseous histopathologic pattern is observed with osseous, cemental, and/or ovoid-curvoid calcified deposits. This feature, along with confinement to

Reactive lesions of the oral cavity are non-neoplastic proliferations occurring due to chronic irritation. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive lesion usually occurring on the interdental papilla. POF is predominantly found in the second decade of life with a definitive female predilection. This is a case report of a middle-aged male patient with gingival overgrowth in left lower back tooth region. Clinically, the lesion was asymptomatic, firm, pale pink and sessile but unusually large in size. Surgical excision of the lesion was done followed by histopathological confirmation with

A 19-year-old man presented with a long-standing history of nasal obstruction, which gradually became worse over the past 2 years. Nasal endoscopy revealed a sizeable rounded mass covered by a normal-looking mucosa. Imaging studies showed a mass arising from the left middle turbinate that extended throughout the expanse of the anterior skull base. The tumour was resected via an endoscopic endonasal approach. Histopathological examination revealed a psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma. The patient remains free of recurrence after almost 3 years of follow-up. Only four cases of ossifying fib

Benign fibro-osseous lesions are a group of pathological conditions characterized by the replacement of normal bone with cellular fibrous connective tissue that undergoes mineralization. The most common types of benign fibro-osseous lesions include fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, and osseous dysplasia. However, diagnosing these lesions can be challenging due to their overlapping clinical, radiological, and histological features, which can cause a diagnostic dilemma for surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists. One rare type of benign fibro-osseous lesion is the cemento-ossifying fibroma

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws and craniofacial bones. Accurate diagnosis can be challenging due to significant overlap of clinicopathological features. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical, radiological and histological features that can aid in diagnosis and identify characteristics that allow categorisation into the three subtypes: juvenile trabecular, psammomatoid and cemento-ossifying OF.
METHODS: A total of 74 cases of OF were systematically reviewed for their principle features. Of these, 46 cases were evaluated for their radiographic featu

A 24-year-old patient with left eye proptosis and intermittent pain for 5 months was admitted to our hospital. Physical examination revealed neither extra ocular muscle limitations nor visual field defects. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a multicystic mass in the left extraconal space compressing the superior oblique muscle and adjacent frontal lobe. Layered hemorrhage was observed within the lesion in the 1-month follow-up MRI. Dynamic contrast enhanced imaging showed mild increased perfusion of the surrounding peripheral portion. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed an increased
