In Viet Nam, household direct out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditure as a share of the total health expenditure has been always high, ranging from 50% to 70%. The high share of OOP expenditure has been linked to different inequity problems such as catastrophic health expenditure (households must reduce their expenditure on other necessities) and impoverishment. This paper aims to examine catastrophic and poverty impacts of household out-of-pocket health expenditure in Viet Nam over time and identify socio-economic indicators associated with them. Data used in this research were obtained from a

Disability inclusion in primary health care is not a peripheral issue but a fundamental test of whether health systems in sub-Saharan Africa are advancing health equity and universal health coverage. Persons with disabilities experience persistent and overlapping barriers across the care pathway, including physical inaccessibility, unaffordable services, inaccessible information, poor provider communication, stigma, weak referral systems, and limited access to rehabilitation and assistive technology. These barriers are intensified by poverty, gender inequality, rural residence, and under-resou

BACKGROUND: The implementation of community-based health insurance in (CBHI) in Rwanda has reduced out of pocket (OOP) spending for the > 79% of citizens who enroll in it but the effect for surgical patients is not well described. For all but the poorest citizens who are completely subsidized, the OOP (out of pocket) payment at time of service is 10%. However, 55.5% of the population is below the international poverty line meaning that even this copay can have a significant impact on a family's financial health. The aim of this study was to estimate the burden of OOP payments for cesarean sect

INTRODUCTION: Out-of-pocket (OOP) payments for healthcare severely affect the current consumption, future health and earnings capacity of poor/underprivileged households and hence it is crucial for priority setting. This study assesses the variation in overall as well as disease-specific impoverishment impact of OOP payments between the regions experiencing different climate change risks, defined as high disaster-prone (HDP) areas and low-disaster-prone (LDP) areas, in Bangladesh.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper estimated three poverty measures, such as poverty headcount, poverty intensity

BACKGROUND: Protection against financial risk due to medical spending is an explicit health guarantee within Chile's AUGE health reform. This paper seeks to analyze the degree to which out-of-pocket expenditure still expose Chilean households to financial catastrophe and impoverishment, and to explore inequalities in financial protection.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify empirical studies analyzing financial protection in Chile. The search included databases as well as grey literature, i.e. governmental and institutional webpages. The indicators are based on t

In many Western countries, the relative weight of people -- measured by the body mass index (BMI) -- has increased substantially in recent years, leading to an increasing incidence of overweight and related health problems. As with many forms of risky behavior, it is plausible that overweight is related to the individual discount rate. Increases in credit card debts, the rise in gambling and the development of a more hedonic life style, suggest that the average discount rate has increased over time. An increase in time discounting may be a contributing factor in the rise in BMI. Applying a lar

There is increasing pressure for reduction of user fees, but this can have adverse effects by decreasing facility-level funds. To address this, direct facility funding (DFF) was piloted in Coast Province, Kenya, with health facility committees (HFCs) responsible for managing the funds. We evaluated the implementation and perceived impact 2.5 years after DFF introduction. Quantitative data collection at 30 public health centres and dispensaries included a structured interview with the in-charge, record reviews and exit interviews. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with the in-char

With the increasing prices of newly approved anti-cancer treatments contributing to rising healthcare costs, healthcare systems are facing complex economic and ethical dilemmas. Especially in countries with universal access and mandatory health insurance, including many European countries, the organizing of funding or reimbursement of expensive new treatments can be challenging. When expensive anti-cancer treatments are deemed safe and effective, but are not (yet) reimbursed, ethical dilemmas arise. In countries with universal healthcare systems, such as the Netherlands, this gives rise to a r

Epidemiological and intervention studies in nutritional psychiatry suggest that the risk of mood disorders is associated with what we eat. However, few studies use a person-centred approach to explore the food and mood relationship. In this qualitative study of 50 Australian participants, we explored individuals' experiences with food and mood as revealed during focus group discussions. Using a thematic template analysis, we identified three themes in the food and mood relationship: (i) social context: familial and cultural influences of food and mood, (ii) social economics: time, finance, and

INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) 300 mg/emtricitabine (FTC) 200 mg is a proven strategy for preventing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission in men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aimed to test the feasibility and acceptability of PrEP delivered at a pilot clinic for MSM in Hong Kong, where PrEP service is currently unavailable.
METHODS: Partially self-financed PrEP was provided to HIV-negative adult MSM with high behavioural risk of HIV transmission after excluding hepatitis B infection and renal insufficiency. Participa

BACKGROUND: In alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.8 on Universal Health Coverage, this study assesses the extent to which Türkiye’s health insurance system protected households from out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditures before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the implementation of the Health Transformation Program and Universal Health Insurance, concerns remain about financial protection, particularly amid economic downturns and the rapid expansion of private healthcare. METHODS: Using nationally representative Household Budget Survey data from 2019 (pre-pandemic)

According to a survey by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare in 2017, 3.6% of Japanese adults-equivalent to about 3.2 million people-have suffered from problem gambling at some point in their lifetime. This study examines the relationship between financial literacy, financial education, and gambling behavior (measured as gambling frequency) among the Japanese population. We hypothesize that financially literate and financially educated people who use their knowledge to make sound financial decisions are less likely to gamble. The data used in this study are from a nationwide survey
