Factors associated with excessive daytime sleepiness among firefighters in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) has a negative impact on quality of life, work productivity and potentially increasing the risk of work-related accidents. Due to their shift systems, firefighters are vulnerable to having EDS. However, there has been limited research on EDS among firefighters, particularly in Indonesia. AIMS: To assess the prevalence of EDS among Indonesian firefighters and identify associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of firefighters working at a district level Firefighters Department in a district of West Java, Indonesia, was undertaken in Oc

Admiration and motivation: key factors in managing PTSD among firefighters.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) presents a significant challenge for firefighters. While research suggests that admiration may have a positive impact on individual psychological well-being, its specific influence on PTSD among firefighters remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between admiration, motivation (both internal and external), and PTSD in a sample of 2156 firefighters in order to identify effective coping strategies for managing PTSD in this population. The findings indicate a statistically significant inverse relationship between admiration and PTS

Alcohol Misuse and Correlates with Mental Health Indicators among Firefighters.

Background: Stress and repetitive exposures to potentially traumatizing events are inherent to first-responder professions. Firefighters and other crisis responders are often exposed to incidents in their work environments and are at risk of developing acute or posttraumatic symptomatology, depression, and anxiety, as well as harmful patterns of alcohol consumption. Most prior research and theory suggests that many firefighters use alcohol to cope with past and current stressors, and that increased drinking accompanies ongoing exposures to stressful occupational hazards. Objectives: The primar

Etiology of Exercise Injuries in Firefighters: A Healthcare Practitioners' Perspective.

The purpose of this study was to query healthcare practitioners (HCPs) who treat firefighter injuries to identify risk factors and mechanisms associated with musculoskeletal injuries during exercise. A phenomenological design was utilized to understand the experiences of HCPs while treating firefighters' musculoskeletal injuries due to exercise. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 HCPs. Two interviews were pilot-tested with HCPs to ensure reliability and validity. Interviews were transcribed and uploaded to a qualitative analysis software program. Although the study inquired abou

Behavioral and Occupational Health in Military Firefighters: An Understudied Population.

To our knowledge, no studies on health conditions in U.S. military firefighters exist. Data and demographics from the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database were analyzed on several shared medical issues among military personnel and civilian firefighters. Descriptive statistics and Chi-Square goodness of fit tests were conducted to support study aims. Between 2001 and 2015, substantial incidence rate increases (per 10,000) of tinnitus, PTSD, insomnia, and OSA (2005-2015) were observed. Modest to large increases in depressive disorders, adjustment reaction, generalized anxiety disorder, and pani

Blood pressure in firefighters, police officers, and other emergency responders.

Elevated blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Increased risk begins in the prehypertensive range and increases further with higher pressures. The strenuous duties of emergency responders (firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel) can interact with their personal risk profiles, including elevated blood pressure, to precipitate acute cardiovascular events. Approximately three-quarters of emergency responders have prehypertension or hypertension, a proportion which is expected to increase, based on the obesity epide

Reasons for rejection: why people fail to qualify as firefighters.

In the decade beginning 1 January 1985, 916 individuals (including five females) were medically examined with a view to joining the full-time service of Strathclyde Fire Brigade (SFB). One hundred and nine (11.9%), including two females, were rejected. The five main causes of failure were: ocular (n = 46, 42.2%); lack of stamina (n = 21, 19.2%); 'others' (n = 12, 11.0%); cardiovascular (n = 9, 8.3%) and orthopaedic (n = 6, 5.5%). Thirty-two had chest X-rays. One abnormality was found -an azygous lobe-but it played no part in the decision to decline the applicant. There was little life- or heal

Differential metabolic profiles by Hispanic ethnicity among male Tucson firefighters.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters face regular exposure to known and probable human carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, and formaldehyde, leading to an increased risk of various cancers compared to the general population. Hispanic and black firefighters are at increased risk of additional cancers not elevated in non-Hispanic white firefighters, yet biological pathways underlying these differences are unknown. OBJECTIVES: The study objectives were to evaluate differences in the urinary metabolome between Hispanic and non-Hispanic firefighters, pre-and post-firegroun

Cancer risk among firefighters and police in the Ontario workforce.

OBJECTIVE: Firefighters and police often work in high-stress, complex environments with known and suspected carcinogenic exposures. We aimed to characterise cancer incidence among firefighters and police. METHODS: The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) was used to identify workers employed as firefighters or police in Ontario. A cohort of workers were identified using lost-time workers' compensation claims data and followed for cancer in the Ontario Cancer Registry (1983-2020). Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate HRs and 95% CIs for primary site-specific cancer d
