Functional consistency across two behavioural modalities: fire-setting and self-harm in female special hospital patients.

BACKGROUND: Fire-setting and self-harm behaviours among women in high security special hospitals may be understood using Shye's Action System Theory (AST) in which four functional modes are recognized: 'adaptive', 'expressive', 'integrative', and 'conservative'. AIMS: To test for relationships between different forms of fire-setting and self-harm behaviours and AST modes among women in special hospital, and for consistency within modes across the two behaviours. METHOD: Clinical case files evidencing both fire-setting and self-harm behaviours (n = 50) were analysed for content, focusing on i

Kleine-Levin syndrome associated with fire setting.

Kleine-Levin syndrome is characterized by periodic hypersomnia associated with megaphagia and striking behavioral and psychiatric symptoms; it occurs primarily in adolescent boys. We treated a 17-year-old boy who had typical recurring somnolent episodes. His bizarre behavior included fire setting and stealing, both of which may have represented compulsions. His EEG during a sleepy episode was diffusely abnormal with generalized slowing of background activity; as he awoke and improved clinically, his EEG returned to normal. Between episodes, his EEG was normal. The relationship between Kleine-L

Fire-setting performed in adolescence or early adulthood predicts schizophrenia: a register-based follow-up study of pre-trial offenders.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive and disruptive behaviours often precede the onset of serious mental illnesses. Fire-setting is a type of crime that is associated with psychotic disorders. AIM: The aim of this prospective follow-up study was to investigate if fire-setting performed in adolescence or early adulthood was associated with future diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. METHODS: The consecutive sample consisted of 111 Finnish 15-25-year old males with fire-setting crimes, decreed to a pre-trial forensic psychiatric examination in 1973-1998, and showing no past nor current ps

Use of CO-oximetry to confirm carboxyhemoglobinemia in cats involved in secondary arson homicide.

The body of a deceased human and 4 deceased cats were found in a house while a fire was being extinguished. As a result of these findings, arson, homicide, and animal death investigations were opened. As part of the animal death investigation, all of the cats were submitted for veterinary forensic autopsies. All cats had soot on the fur and had soot deposits within the oral cavity, esophagus, and respiratory tract. Two cats had soot within the stomach. Cardiac blood was analyzed for carboxyhemoglobin using a CO-oximeter, and all cats had levels >65%. The cause of death was determined to be due

Forensic analysis of wooden safety matches -- a case study.

In this case, an individual was suspected of attempting to burn materials potentially relating to a murder case. A number of spent and unspent matches were seized at the scene by police for forensic examination. Coincidentally, a police raid at the suspect's house revealed a number of matchboxes, all of the same brand, containing matches that had a visual similarity to those recovered at the scene. Stable Isotope Profiling (SIP) was used to assess whether matches could either be distinguished or shown to be indistinguishable by 13C and 2H isotopic composition. These results were then compared

[Forensic psychiatric examination of arsonists].

The 116 persons charged with arson in Norway during the years 1980-87 are characterized by poor education, and lack of vocational, marital and social adjustment, combined with alcohol and some drug abuse. Few were psychotic at the time of the arson. Personality disturbance, mostly of an antisocial character was the most prominent diagnosis. Few were sexually deviant. Thoughts and feelings of vengeance, anger and hostility, combined with dysphoria or depression, were common at the time of the arson. Excitement, followed by release of tension upon lighting the fire is frequently reported. Sexual

The emergence and recurrence of child firesetting: a one-year prospective study.

This study provides 1-year, prospective data regarding the firesetting histories of a sample of 138 children (ages 6-13 years) recruited from patient and non-patient populations. Parent and child interviews were conducted at initial assessment and 1-year followup. Of 78 children initially classified as nonfiresetters, 14 children (18%) later had set a fire. Of 60 children initially identified as firesetters, 21 (35%) had set an additional fire by followup. Late starting was associated with limited family sociability, whereas recidivism was associated with child knowledge about combustibles and

Measuring the Cognition of Firesetting Individuals Using Explicit and Implicit Measures.

This study examined un-apprehended deliberate firesetters' cognition. Relative to non-firesetters, un-apprehended firesetters reported higher explicitly measured fire interest. However, their reaction times (RTs) on a fire interest implicit LDT were inconsistent with these findings. They did, however, display a pattern of LDT RTs consistent with Dangerous World and Fire is Powerful beliefs.

Juvenile animal cruelty and firesetting behaviour.

BACKGROUND: There is a view that young people presenting with an animal cruelty and firesetting combination represent a uniquely risky group, but prior work has relied on samples with insufficient power. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the prevalence of the co-occurrence of animal cruelty and firesetting behaviour among young delinquents? What other features correlate with this? METHODS: We measured the prevalence of animal cruelty and firesetting among 292,649 juvenile offenders and used rare events logistic regression to examine demographic, criminal, mental health and family histories as corre

Profile of female firesetters. Implications for treatment.

We studied 28 female arsonists and 28 female controls admitted to Holloway Prison over four months to examine the psychological and situational antecedents to firesetting so that the behaviour could be targeted for treatment. Over 92% of the arson group had received a psychiatric diagnosis. Both groups had similarly high rates of early deprivation and abuse. None of the female arsonists had set a fire for financial gain. There was no evidence of sexual arousal being associated with firesetting; only two women described their firesetting in terms that suggest a level of compulsion--one of these

Interdisciplinary knowledge translation: lessons learned from a mental health: fire service collaboration.

Collaborative approaches are being increasingly advocated for addressing a variety of health, mental health and social needs for children, youth and families. Factors important for effective knowledge translation of collaborative approaches of service delivery across disciplines, however, have not been rigorously examined. TAPP-C: The Arson Prevention Program for Children is an intervention program for child and adolescent firesetters provided collaboratively by fire service and mental health professionals. The present study examined the adopter, innovation, and dissemination characteristics a

Arsonists and Violent Offenders Compared: Two Peas in a Pod?

Arsonists are considered a type of violent offender by some and a distinct group of offenders by others. Assuming the latter could be beneficial to offer tailor-made psychotherapeutic treatment to these offenders. The present study investigated whether arsonists ( n = 55) and violent offenders ( n = 41) are differentiable regarding several demographic and personal characteristics, and criminal career. Results indicated that arsonists were significantly more often diagnosed with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM) Axis II disorder, and more socially isolated and lacki

Contribution of forensic autopsy to scene reconstruction in mass fire casualties: a case of alleged arson on a floor consisting of small compartments in a building.

A fire is an important cause of mass disasters, involving various forensic issues. Before dawn on an early morning, 16 male visitors in their twenties to sixties were killed in a possibly incendiary fire at a 'private video parlor' consisting of small compartments in a building. The main causes of death as determined by forensic autopsy were acute carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication for all of the 15 found-dead victims, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following acute CO intoxication for a victim who died in hospital. Burns were mild (<20% of body surface) in most victims, except for three vi

[Arson--a disorder of impulse control?].

Reviewing the literature the current knowledge about the motivational basis of arson is discussed. Fire-setters form a heterogenous group; they seem to commit their crimes for different reasons. Some of them are imbecile, some suicidal, and other showed autoaggressive behaviour in the past; sometimes a connection with sexual excitement can be observed. The criteria for the diagnosis "pyromania" used in the classification manuals DSM-III-R and ICD-10 are strict, in order to facilitate an operationalised diagnosis. Most of the fire-settings cannot be classified under this subcategory of "disorde

An evaluation of a specialist firesetting treatment programme for male and female mentally disordered offenders (the FIP-MO).

Individuals who set deliberate fires are frequently encountered by clinicians working in forensic mental health services. However, little attention has been paid to developing standardised treatment for this behaviour, and few evaluations of treatment have been conducted in forensic mental health services. This study evaluates a new standardised group cognitive behavioural treatment programme for individuals residing in forensic psychiatric hospitals who have engaged in deliberate firesetting (The Firesetting Intervention Programme for Mentally Disordered Offenders; FIP-MO). Sixty-three male a

The Effects of Local Police Surges on Crime and Arrests in New York City.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) under Operation Impact deployed extra police officers to high crime areas designated as impact zones. Officers were encouraged to conduct investigative stops in these areas. City officials credited the program as one of the leading causes of New York City's low crime rate. We tested the effects of Operation Impact on reported crimes and arrests from 2004 to 2012 using a difference-in-differences approach. We used Poisson regression models to compare differences in crime and arrest counts before and after census block groups were designated as impact zones

Pathways to Firesetting for Mentally Disordered Offenders: A Preliminary Examination.

The current study aimed to investigate the specific pathways in the offence process for mentally disordered firesetters. In a previous study, an offence chain model was constructed (i.e., the Firesetting Offence Chain for Mentally Disordered Offenders, FOC-MD) using offence descriptions obtained from 23 mentally disordered firesetters, detailing the sequence of contextual, behavioural, affective, and cognitive factors that precipitate an incidence of firesetting for this population. The current study examines the prevalence of the specific pathways to firesetting for the original 23 mentally d
