Randomized clinical trial of intravenous soybean oil alone versus soybean oil plus fish oil emulsion after gastrointestinal cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: Specific immunonutrients may reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and shorten recovery time. This randomized trial evaluated the clinical efficacy of a fish oil emulsion on outcome and immune function after gastrointestinal cancer surgery. METHODS: A total of 206 patients with gastrointestinal or colonic cancer were randomized to receive isocaloric and isonitrogenous intravenous infusions of either soybean oil alone (1.2 g per kg bodyweight per day; control group, 103 analysed) or soybean plus fish oil emulsion (1.0 and 0.2 g per kg per day respectively; treatment g

Exocrine pancreatic secretion is stimulated in piglets fed fish oil compared with those fed coconut oil or lard.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of feeding diets containing fat sources with different fatty acid composition (fish oil, coconut oil or lard, 10 g/100 g diet) on exocrine pancreatic secretion in piglets after weaning. A total of 16 barrows were weaned at 4 wk of age; 3 d later, they were surgically fitted with a catheter in the pancreatic duct for continuous collection of pancreatic juice. Collections of pancreatic juice were made every other day starting 4 d postsurgically. Piglets fed the fish oil diet secreted a significantly greater volume of pancreatic juice than piglets f

Rapid quantification of oxidation indicators in fish oil by digital image colourimetry.

A digital image colourimetry (DIC) method was developed to rapidly determine the acid value (AV), peroxide value (PV) and iodine value (IV) of fish oils. The copper-soap, iodometric, and Wijs reactions were adapted for smartphone imaging by performing the reactions in light-isolated boxes and setting the acquisition settings to ensure consistent colour capture. Colour features from RGB/Lab/YUV spaces were extracted and screened using the Pearson correlation coefficient to retain only the most informative channels for AV, PV and IV. Six regression algorithms were compared, and the random forest

Atopic and non-atopic effects of fish oil supplementation during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: We recently conducted a double-blinded randomised controlled trial showing that fish-oil supplementation during pregnancy reduced the risk of persistent wheeze or asthma in the child by 30%. Here, we explore the mechanisms of the intervention. METHODS: 736 pregnant women were given either placebo or n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) in the third trimester in a randomised controlled trial. Deep clinical follow-up of the 695 children in the trial was done at 12 visits until age 6 years, including assessment of genotype at the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) locus, pl

The Effects of Fish Oil on Cardiovascular Diseases: Systematical Evaluation and Recent Advance.

Fish oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, i.e., eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both of which are widely distributed in the body such as heart and brain. In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that unsaturated fatty acids may have effects of anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, protecting vascular endothelial cells, thrombosis inhibition, modifying autonomic nerve function, improving left ventricular remodeling, and regulating blood lipid. Given the relevance to public health, there has been increasing interest in the research of potential cardioprotective effects

Postischemic fish oil treatment confers task-dependent memory recovery.

A series of our previous studies demonstrated that fish oil (FO), equivalent to 300mg/kg docosahexahenoic acid (DHA), facilitates memory recovery after transient, global cerebral ischemia (TGCI) in the aversive radial maze (AvRM). The present study sought to address two main issues: (i) whether the memory-protective effect of FO that has been observed in the AvRM can be replicated in the passive avoidance test (PAT) and object location test (OLT) and (ii) whether FO at doses that are lower than those used previously can also prevent TGCI-induced memory loss. In Experiment 1, naive rats were tr

Fish Oil-Derived Fatty Acids in Pregnancy and Wheeze and Asthma in Offspring.

BACKGROUND: Reduced intake of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) may be a contributing factor to the increasing prevalence of wheezing disorders. We assessed the effect of supplementation with n-3 LCPUFAs in pregnant women on the risk of persistent wheeze and asthma in their offspring. METHODS: We randomly assigned 736 pregnant women at 24 weeks of gestation to receive 2.4 g of n-3 LCPUFA (fish oil) or placebo (olive oil) per day. Their children formed the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood2010 (COPSAC2010) cohort and were followed prospectively with exten

Is Exposure to Macondo Oil Reflected in the Otolith Chemistry of Marsh-Resident Fish?

Genomic and physiological responses in Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) in the northern Gulf of Mexico have confirmed oil exposure of resident marsh fish following the Macondo blowout in 2010. Using these same fish, we evaluated otolith microchemistry as a method for assessing oil exposure history. Laser-ablation inductively-coupled-plasma mass spectrometry was used to analyze the chemical composition of sagittal otoliths to assess whether a trace metal signature could be detected in the otoliths of F. grandis collected from a Macondo-oil impacted site in 2010, post-spill relative to pre-spil

Regulation of intestinal NPC1L1 expression by dietary fish oil and docosahexaenoic acid.

To address the effect of the n-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (22:6), on proteins that play a role in cholesterol absorption, CaCo-2 cells were incubated with taurocholate micelles alone or micelles containing 22:6 or oleic acid (18:1). Compared with controls or 18:1, 22:6 did not interfere with the cellular uptake of micellar cholesterol. Apical cholesterol efflux was enhanced in cells incubated with 22:6. Cholesterol trafficking from the plasma membrane to the endoplasmic reticulum was decreased by 22:6. 22:6 decreased Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) protein and mRNA levels without alter

Effect of a fish oil and arginine-fortified diet in thermally injured patients.

Burn injury induces a hypercatabolic inflammatory state, predisposing burn patients to malnutrition, poor wound healing, and infectious complications. We conducted this study to determine what effect a diet fortified with fish oil and arginine (FAD) would have on wound healing in a thermally injured population. Twenty-three thermally injured patients were enrolled in this randomized double blind enteral feeding study from July 2002 to August 2004. All study patients received isonitrogenous enteral intragastric feeding within 48 hours of admission. Patients were randomized to our standard diet

Effects of fish oil treatment on bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice.

Bleomycin is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of neoplasms. A major side-effect of bleomycin therapy is the induction of an intense inflammatory response that develops into pulmonary fibrosis. Several studies have shown that certain polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish oil reduce the inflammatory response in vivo. Fish oil has been employed for the treatment of several pathologies such as glomerulonephritis, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and even as an adjuvant in cancer therapy. This study examined the effects of fish oil treatment on the development of bleomycin-in

Effect of fish oil on offensive and defensive factors in gastric ulceration in rats.

The effect of fish oil (FO) derived from Scomberoides commersonianus containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids was studied on gastric ulcers and as well as on offensive and defensive factors in gastric mucosal damage, following experimental gastric ulceration. FO significantly reduced the severity of ulceration in gastric ulcers induced by aspirin, cold-restraint stress (CRS), alcohol, and pylorus ligation. The results also indicated the potentiality of FO in maintaining the integrity of gastric mucosa by virtue of its effect on both offensive and defensive gastric mucosal factors. It dec

Suppressive effects of fish oil on mesangial cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Mesangial cell proliferation is a characteristic feature of IgA nephropathy and many other forms of glomerulonephritis. Recent clinical studies have shown that dietary fish oil supplementation retards renal disease progression in patients with IgA nephropathy. The mechanism by which this effect occurs is unknown. METHODS: The anti-Thy 1.1 (ATS) model of mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis was employed to test the hypothesis that dietary fish oil supplementation reduces mesangial cell proliferation following acute injury. Subcultured rat mesangial cells were used to determin

Effects of sodium alginate and fish oil to reduce trichloroethylene accumulation in rats.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of dietary sodium alginate and fish oil on bodily accumulated trichloroethylene (TCE), which has been widely used as a halogenated solvent and is metabolized at a high rate. Each of three groups of rats was fed on either of diets containing cellulose-soybean oil (control), Na-alginate-soybean oil or cellulose-fish oil for 3 wk, and thereafter given a single oral dose of TCE (100 mg (0.76 mmol)/rat). TCE levels in the blood were monitored for 10 h after the administration of TCE. The peak concentrations of TCE in the blood tended to be higher in th

Peroxisomes in mice fed a diet supplemented with low doses of fish oil.

The influence of low dietary doses (0.1 and 0.8% w/w) of a commercial fish oil preparation on peroxisomes in normal mice was studied and compared to the known strong inductive effects of high (10%) fish oil diets. Low fish oil doses were chosen to supply the mice with a concentration of docosahexaenoic acid, which was beneficial to patients with a peroxisomal disease. Peroxisomes were evaluated by cytochemical, morphometric, and enzymological techniques. The 0.1% fish oil diet had no effect on peroxisomes in liver, heart, and kidney even after prolonged treatment. The 0.8% diet did not change

Atherosclerosis. Chronic effects of fish oil and a therapeutic diet in nonhuman primates.

Prolonged testing of marine fish oil (FO) as a dietary supplement is necessary because of widespread claims that it is antiatherogenic. The basis for such claims is inadequate because atherogenesis is chronic and may not respond to short-term changes induced by dietary treatments. A proven (vervet) model of atherosclerosis promoted by an atherogenic diet (AD) was used to test dietary supplementation with Atlantic pilchard FO for 20 months in 47 omnivorous nonhuman primates. Responses were controlled against known favorable effects of changing from the AD to a therapeutic diet (TD). Compliance
