Structure-dependent removal of aromatic organophosphate flame retardants by combined adsorption and electrochemical oxidation.

The removal of aromatic organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) from water remains a significant challenge due to their persistence, hydrophobicity, and resistance to conventional treatment processes. In this study, a combined adsorption-electrochemical oxidation system using graphite intercalation compound (GIC) was evaluated for the removal of five representative aromatic OPFRs: triphenyl phosphate (TPP), 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDPP), tricresyl phosphate (TCP), and tris(4-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (TTBP). Batch adsorption experiments showed rap

Feasibility Study: Silicone Wristbands for Measuring Pesticides and Flame-Retardants in Farming Older Men.

BACKGROUND: Silicone wristbands can detect exposure to multiple chemicals. In the last decade, health studies have used them to assess environmental exposures, but few have included aging men, particularly those actively working with pesticides. OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility, acceptability, and/or receptiveness of older adults to wear a wristband for multiple days while collecting other biomarkers (serum and urine). Additionally, we aimed to assess exposure differences among actively farming pesticide applicators versus non-farming older adults and examine correlations between pestici

Are Sleeping Children Exposed to Plasticizers, Flame Retardants, and UV-Filters from Their Mattresses?

Our research found that children aged 1-4 years are being exposed to elevated levels of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in their sleeping microenvironment (SME). We detected 21 SVOCs in four classes (ortho-phthalates, organophosphate esters, benzophenones, and salicylates) in 16 new children's mattresses. One mattress exceeded the Canadian regulatory limit of 0.1% (by weight) for children's mattresses for di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), while five had >0.1% diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP), and diisononyl phthalate (DiNP), which are regulated in children's toys but

[GC-MS Analysis of Tris(1-aziridinyl)phosphine Oxide Flame Retardants in Textile Products].

Tris(1-aziridinyl)phosphine oxide (APO) used as flame retardant in textile products, such as curtains, carpets, and sleeping clothes, is prohibited in Japan under the "Act on the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances." This study developed a GC-MS-based method to quantify APO more accurately and safely than the current official method. The APO in textile products was extracted with methanol, the extract was replaced with acetone instead of hexane as previously reported, and purified by florisil cartridge column. This cleanup method was instead of the harmful and carcinoge

Anaerobic biotransformation of two novel brominated flame retardants: Kinetics, isotope fractionation and reaction mechanisms.

1,2,5,6-tetrabromocyclooctane (TBCO) and 2,3-dibromopropyl-2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (DPTE), as safer alternatives to traditional brominated flame retardants, have been extensively detected in various environmental media and pose emerging risks. However, much less is known about their fate in the environment. Anaerobic microbial transformation is a key pathway for the natural attenuation of contaminants. This study investigated, for the first time, the microbial transformation behaviors of β-TBCO and DPTE by Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain CG1. The results indicated that both β-TBCO and DPTE

Preparation of Organic-Inorganic Phosphorus-Nitrogen-Based Flame Retardants and Their Application to Plywood.

The combustibility of wood can be improved by physical and chemical means, thus expanding the use of wood products. In this study, two novel phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardants (UCPR and MCPR) were developed, and the intercalated modified layered double hydroxides (LDH) thereof were designated as UCPR-LDH and MCPR-LDH. By impregnating poplar veneer with UCPR-LDH and MCPR-LDH solutions, the study investigated the effects of different concentrations (1%, 5%, 10%), processes (vacuum-pressure impregnation, room temperature impregnation, normal-pressure impregnation), and impregnation times (2 h,

Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Pregnant Women: Sources, Occurrence, and Potential Risks to Pregnancy Outcomes.

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are found in various environmental matrixes and human samples. Exposure to OPFRs during gestation may interfere with pregnancy, for example, inducing maternal oxidative stress and maternal hypertension during pregnancy, interfering maternal and fetal thyroid hormone secretion and fetal neurodevelopment, and causing fetal metabolic abnormalities. However, the consequences of OPFR exposure on pregnant women, impact on mother-to-child transmission of OPFRs, and harmful effects on fetal and pregnancy outcomes have not been evaluated. This review describes t

Reproductive outcomes associated with flame retardants among couples seeking fertility treatment: A paternal perspective.

BACKGROUND: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been phased out of production for nearly a decade yet are still frequently detected in serum of U.S. adults. PBDE concentrations have been associated with adverse reproductive outcomes and laboratory studies suggest hydroxylated-BDEs (OH-BDEs) may act as endocrine disruptors. We set out to assess the joint effects of paternal and maternal serum PBDE concentrations on in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes and the association between paternal serum OH-BDE concentrations and IVF outcomes. METHODS: This analysis included 189 couples (contrib

Fate of brominated flame retardants and organochlorine pesticides in urban soil: volatility and degradation.

As the uses of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs) are being phased out in many countries, soils could become a secondary emission source to the atmosphere. It is also anticipated that the demand for alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs) will grow, but little is known about their environmental fate in soils. In this study, the volatility and degradation of BFRs and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soil was investigated. A low organic carbon (5.6%) urban soil was spiked with a suite of BFRs and OCPs, followed by incubation under laboratory condition for 360 days. These included BD

Determination of brominated flame retardants in Jukskei River catchment area in Gauteng, South Africa.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are considered to be environmental pollutants due to their toxicity, persistence and ubiquity in the environment. Little information is known about the presence of brominated flame retardants in South Africa's water systems. Therefore, this study examined and compared different extraction methods (liquid-liquid (LL) vs. solid phase (SP) for water, Soxhlet extraction (SE) vs. ultrasonic for sediment) for extraction efficiencies in the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in water and sediment from Jukskei

Brominated flame retardants in seawater and atmosphere of the Atlantic and the Southern Ocean.

Seawater and air samples were collected aboard the FS Polarstern during the cruises ANT-XXV/1 + 2 in the Atlantic and Southern Ocean in 2008. The particulate and dissolved phase in water and particulate and gaseous phase in air were analyzed separately for nine polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and six non-PBDE brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Air concentrations of 2,3-dibromopropyl-2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (DPTE) and hexabromobenzene (HBB) in the gaseous and particulate phase (median = 0.56 pg m(-3) for DPTE and 0.92 pg m(-3) for HBB) were comparable to ∑(9)PBDEs (1.0 pg m(-3)). Exposure assessment of fetus and newborn to brominated flame retardants in France: preliminary data.

Brominated flame retardants (BFR) are chemicals extensively used in many manufactured products to reduce the risk of fire, but also environmental pollutants. In order to assess the potential risk linked to these compounds in human, a French monitoring study was initiated to evaluate the exposure of fetus and newborn. A previously described multi-residue analytical method was used, for measuring the main classes of BFR (hexabromocyclododecane, tetrabromobisphenol-A, and tri- to deca-polybromodiphenylethers) in various biological matrices. These analyzed samples (maternal and umbilical serum, ad

Flame Retardation of Natural Rubber: Strategy and Recent Progress.

Natural rubber (NR) as a kind of commercial polymer or engineering elastomer is widely used in tires, dampers, suspension elements, etc., because of its unique overall performance. For some NR products, their work environment is extremely harsh, facing a serious fire safety challenge. Accordingly, it is important and necessary to endow NR with flame retardancy via different strategies. Until now, different methods have been used to improve the flame retardancy of NR, mainly including intrinsic flame retardation through the incorporation of some flame-retarding units into polymer chains and add

Recent Developments in the Flame-Retardant System of Epoxy Resin.

With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection, the development of flame retardants for epoxy resin (EP) has tended to be non-toxic, efficient, multifunctional and systematic. Currently reported flame retardants have been capable of providing flame retardancy, heat resistance and thermal stability to EP. However, many aspects still need to be further improved. This paper reviews the development of EPs in halogen-free flame retardants, focusing on phosphorus flame retardants, carbon-based materials, silicon flame retardants, inorganic nanofillers, and metal-containing compounds. Preparation of a Novel Flame Retardant Formulation for Cotton Fabric.

A novel halogen-free flame-retardant formulation was prepared and coated onto cotton fabrics. The structure of phosphorus compounds in the system was characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR). Results from the ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses presented that the flame retardant was coated successfully onto a cotton surface. We investigated the thermal stability and fire-retardant behaviors of cotton fabrics
