Chryseobacterium indologenes sepsis in a pediatric patient.

Chryseobacterium indologenes is a Gram-negative aerobic bacillus commonly found in nosocomial environments, particularly in patients with prolonged hospital stays or those requiring long-term invasive devices. It primarily affects elderly and immunocompromised individuals. This microorganism is associated with multidrug resistance, which is a crucial factor in treatment decisions. Here, we report a case of C. indologenes infection in an infant following the ingestion of milk formula diluted with untreated water.

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis with Elizabethkingia miricola.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis is linked to increased mortality rates and transfer to haemodialysis or PD discontinuation. Rare and emerging pathogens can pose challenges in management. We present the first case of PD peritonitis caused by Elizabethkingia miricola through direct contamination, which was successfully treated with intraperitoneal and oral antibiotics.

Biofilm-mediated antibiotic cross-protection: Acinetobacter baumannii-driven enhancement of Elizabethkingia anopheles.

UNLABELLED: Acinetobacter baumannii is a clinically prevalent multidrug-resistant bacterium, while Elizabethkingia, an emerging pathogen, has shown increasing infection and mortality rates in recent years. Although co-infections involving both pathogens have been reported, their interactions remain poorly understood. In this study, clinical data from 15 co-infected patients revealed that such infections were more frequent in elderly individuals with underlying diseases requiring intensive care and prolonged hospitalization. The two isolates exhibited similar antibiotic resistance profiles. In

"Unmasking the Uncommon": A case series of multi-drug resistant Elizabethkingia meningoseptica causing late-onset sepsis and meningitis in preterm neonates.

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is an uncommon nosocomial pathogen that causes meningitis, pneumonia, and sepsis in neonates and in immunocompromised individuals. It exhibits resistance to many commonly employed first-line antibiotics used to treat gram-negative pathogens. Herein, we present three cases of late-onset sepsis with multi-drug resistant (MDR) Elizabethkingia meningoseptica in high-risk neonates. Case 1 was a one-day-old preterm low-birth-weight infant who presented with respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock. The patient was intubated and administered empirical broad-spectr

EBR-1, a novel Ambler subclass B1 beta-lactamase from Empedobacter brevis.

Empedobacter brevis (formerly designated Flavobacterium breve) is a gram-negative aerobe involved in nosocomial infections. The Ambler class B beta-lactamase gene bla(EBR-1) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli from E. brevis clinical strain ASS-1, which had reduced susceptibility to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins and carbapenems. Purified beta-lactamase EBR-1 hydrolyzed penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems efficiently but not aztreonam. Kinetic parameters of EBR-1 were similar to those of class B enzymes such as BlaB, IND-2, and GOB-1 identified from other Flavobacteriaceae

Identification of novel prophages and variants of integrative and conjugative elements in Elizabethkingia anophelis clinical isolates from Seremban, Malaysia.

Elizabethkingia anophelis is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen with scarce data from Malaysia. Here we present the complete genome sequences of seven E. anophelis clinical isolates from a tertiary hospital in Seremban, Malaysia. These sequences were analysed alongside over 400 publicly available E. anophelis genomes worldwide. Three of the seven E. anophelis isolates, Eli4, Eli5, and Eli6, were almost identical and their isolation over a six-weeks period from the same hospital was suggestive of nosocomial transmission. The other four E. anophelis isolates were genetically diverse. No pl

Association of Myroides odoratimimus in immunocompromized piglets with post weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome.

AIM: To study the association of opportunistic infection due to Myroides odoratimimus in piglets immunocompromised by porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infection. METHODS AND RESULTS: The clinical samples (n = 101) were analysed bacteriologically. The isolates were identified by their phenotypes and MALDI TOF-MS analysis as Myroides species. The phylogram constructed based on nucleotide sequences of the 16S rRNA gene showed identity (~99%) with the M. odoratimimus isolates. The minimum inhibitory concentration values for antibiotics revealed M. odoratimimus to be resistant against carbapenem,

Microbial Community Analysis of Saliva and Biopsies in Patients With Oral Lichen Planus.

The specific etiology and pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP) remain elusive, and microbial dysbiosis may play an important role in OLP. We evaluated the saliva and tissue bacterial community of patients with OLP and identified the colonization of bacteria in OLP tissues. The saliva (n = 60) and tissue (n = 24) samples from OLP patients and the healthy controls were characterized by 16S rDNA gene sequencing and the bacterial signals in OLP tissues were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) targeting the bacterial 16S rDNA gene. Results indicate that the OLP tissue microbio

Phage resistance mutations in a marine bacterium impact biogeochemically relevant cellular processes.

Phage-bacteria interactions shape ecology and biogeochemistry across biomes. Resistance, arising from their evolutionary arms race, is well documented for receptor mutations, but other resistance mechanisms and their ecological implications remain unexplored. Here we isolated, sequenced and characterized 13 phage-resistant mutants of marine Cellulophaga baltica (Flavobacteriia). Mechanistically, mutations in surface proteins provided broad and complete extracellular resistance against multiple phages through decreased adsorption. Intracellular mutations affecting serine, glycine and threonine

In vitro activities of imipenem, vancomycin, and rifampicin against clinical Elizabethkingia species producing BlaB and GOB metallo-beta-lactamases.

Elizabethkingia genus is emerging in hospitals and resistant to multiple antibiotics. The intrinsic imipenem resistance of Elizabethkingia genus is related to two chromosome-encoded metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs), BlaB and GOB. This study was aimed to investigate the in vitro activity of imipenem, vancomycin, and rifampicin in clinical Elizabethkingia species. The distribution and heterogeneity of MBLs responsible for imipenem resistance were also evaluated. A total of 167 Elizabethkingia isolates from different patients were collected, including E. anophelis (142), E. meningoseptica (11), and

Elizabethkingia in Children: A Comprehensive Review of Symptomatic Cases Reported From 1944 to 2017.

Elizabethkingia species often exhibit extensive antibiotic resistance and result in high morbidity and mortality, yet no systematic reviews exist that thoroughly characterize and quantify concerns for infected infants and children. We performed a review of literature and identified an initial 902 articles; 96 articles reporting 283 pediatric cases met our inclusion criteria and were subsequently reviewed. Case reports spanned 28 countries and ranged from 1944 to 2017. Neonatal meningitis remains the most common presentation of this organism in children, along with a range of other clinical man

Comparison of VITEK2, MALDI-TOF MS, and 16S rDNA sequencing for identification of Myroides odoratus and Myroides odoratimimus.

The genus Myroides comprises the 2 medically relevant species Myroides odoratus and Myroides odoratimimus that are rare opportunistic pathogens and cause infections in immunocompromised patients. A fast identification of Myroides is of importance because these bacterial strains show multiple resistance against antibiotics and therefore limit treatment options. They are associated, for instance, with urinary tract infections, sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, and infectious cellulitis. Since more and more Myroides spp. are being described, additional potentially pathogenic bacteria may be identifi
