Greater Mouse-Tailed Bats Glide During Approximately 50% of Their Flight.

Flapping flight is widely regarded as a mechanically complex and energetically demanding mode of locomotion. In bats, the evolution of flapping flight is hypothesized to have arisen from gliding, an unpowered form of aerial movement. Although intermittent flap-gliding flight is considered advantageous in many bird species, this flight strategy has rarely been studied in bats. In this study, we used on-board tracking devices and audio recordings to characterize the flight behavior and corresponding echolocation of greater mouse-tailed bats (Rhinopoma microphyllum) in the wild. Our results revea

Species variation in mosquito flight-muscle damage resulting from a single filarial infection and its repercussions on a second infection.

Serial sections of females of two highly filaria-susceptible mosquitoes, Aedes togoi and Ae. aegypti, were examined by light microscopy. Following a single Brugia pahangi infection, the predominant reaction of flight muscles of Ae. aegypti was degeneration, whereas that in Ae. togoi was nuclear enlargement, a putative repair response. This also holds true following mechanical injury (Beckett 1990), suggesting an inherent species difference in flight-muscle response to injury. The filariae of a second B. pahangi infection, initiated after muscle damage had been established, usually avoided dege

Multiple feedback loops in the flying cockroach: excitation of the dorsal and inhibition of the ventral giant interneurons.

1. In a tethered cockroach (Periplaneta americana) whose wings have been cut back to stumps, it is possible to elicit brief sequences of flight-like activity by puffing wind on the animal's body. 2. During such brief sequences, rhythmic bursts of action potentials coming from the thorax at the wingbeat frequency, descend the abdominal nerve cord to the last abdominal ganglion (A6). This descending rhythm is often accompanied by an ascending rhythm (Fig. 2). 3. Intracellular recording during flight-like activity from identified ascending giant interneurons, and from some unidentified descending

Skyglow relieves a crepuscular bird from visual constraints on being active.

Artificial light at night significantly alters the predictability of the natural light cycles that most animals use as an essential Zeitgeber for daily activity. Direct light has well-documented local impacts on activity patterns of diurnal and nocturnal organisms. However, artificial light at night also contributes to an indirect illumination of the night sky, called skyglow, which is rapidly increasing. The consequences of this wide-spread form of artificial night light on the behaviour of animals remain poorly understood, with only a few studies performed under controlled (laboratory) condi

MBT3D: Deep learning based multi-object tracker for bumblebee 3D flight path estimation.

This work presents the Multi-Bees-Tracker (MBT3D) algorithm, a Python framework implementing a deep association tracker for Tracking-By-Detection, to address the challenging task of tracking flight paths of bumblebees in a social group. While tracking algorithms for bumblebees exist, they often come with intensive restrictions, such as the need for sufficient lighting, high contrast between the animal and background, absence of occlusion, significant user input, etc. Tracking flight paths of bumblebees in a social group is challenging. They suddenly adjust movements and change their appearance

Wing pitch timing and wing elevation modulate forces and body pitch in forward flapping flight.

Aerodynamic performance in flying animals can be controlled not only by changes in wing shape and size, but also by changes in wing motion. In flapping wings, the two wings interact aerodynamically, where the interaction depends on wingbeat phase, wing proximity, and wing attitude. Although, observations of free-flying animals show wings are relatively close during forward flight, how these interactions influence force production remain unclear. Here we used a robotic flapping wing and quantitative flow measurements to test the effect of wing interactions while varying mean wing elevation and

Diel emergence and dispersal rhythms in the bamboo borer Dinoderus minutus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae).

Biological rhythms regulate insect activity and represent a conserved adaptive trait across life forms. Understanding the behavioral rhythms of dispersive cryptic species is important for elucidating their ecological interactions and improving pest management strategies. In this study, we investigated the diel patterns of emergence and flight activity of the bamboo borer Dinoderus minutus under field and laboratory conditions using a chronobiological approach. Field emergence was evaluated using emergence cages containing naturally infested bamboo culms, whereas flight activity was monitored u

Taking flight!

Understanding the origins of novel complex traits, the evolutionary transitions they enabled, and how those shaped the subsequent course of evolution, are all foundational objectives of evolutionary biology. Yet how developmental systems may transform to yield the first eye, limb, or placenta remains poorly understood. Seminal work by Courtney Clark-Hachtel, David Linz, and Yoshinori Tomoyasu published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2013 used the origins of insect wings - one of the most impactful innovations of animal life on Earth - to provide both a case study and

Moth resonant mechanics are tuned to wingbeat frequency and energetic demands.

An insect's wingbeat frequency is a critical determinant of its flight performance and varies by multiple orders of magnitude across Insecta. Despite potential energetic benefits for an insect that matches its wingbeat frequency to its resonant frequency, recent work has shown that moths may operate off their resonant peak. We hypothesized that across species, wingbeat frequency scales with resonance frequency to maintain favourable energetics, but with an offset in species that use frequency modulation as a means of flight control. The moth superfamily Bombycoidea is ideal for testing this hy

Lévy walks with variable waiting time: A ballistic case.

The Lévy walk process for a lower interval of an excursion times distribution (α<1) is discussed. The particle rests between the jumps, and the waiting time is position-dependent. Two cases are considered: a rising and diminishing waiting time rate ν(x), which require different approximations of the master equation. The process comprises two phases of the motion: particles at rest and in flight. The density distributions for them are derived, as a solution of corresponding fractional equations. For strongly falling ν(x), the resting particles density assumes the α-stable form (truncated at fro

Horse and donkey owners' perspectives on fireworks and their impact on equids in the UK.

In the UK, fireworks are common during several celebratory events throughout the year. Previous evidence has shown the adverse effects of fireworks on domestic companion animals. However, there has been little focus on equids. An online survey was developed to understand the impact of fireworks on horses and donkeys, how owners attempt to mitigate these impacts, and the owners' views on fireworks. A total of 1,234 horse owners and 232 donkey owners responded. The majority (77%) advocated tighter regulations surrounding the use of fireworks, including reduction in the maximum noise produced, an

The effects of hibernation and forced disuse (neurectomy) on bone properties in arctic ground squirrels.

Bone loss is a well-known medical consequence of disuse such as in long-term space flight. Immobilization in many animals mimics the effects of space flight on bone mineral density. Decreases in metabolism are also thought to contribute to a loss of skeletal mass. Hibernating mammals provide a natural model of disuse and metabolic suppression. Hibernating ground squirrels have been shown to maintain bone strength despite long periods of disuse and decreased metabolism during torpor. This study examined if the lack of bone loss during torpor was a result of the decrease in metabolic rate during

Effects of D-amphetamine on defensive behaviors related to fear and anxiety.

In rodents, the administration of amphetamine has been associated with increased locomotor activity and stereotypy, and an emerging body of evidence suggests that it also enhances anxiety-like behavior in a number of animal models. Ethoexperimental analyses have outlined an array of defensive behaviors to threat that are responsive to anxiolytic, panicolytic-like and panicogenic agents, suggesting that the characterization of amphetamine effects on defense may provide further insights into the emotionality consequences of this drug. In Experiment 1, intraperitoneal administration of amphetamin

Rotifers in space: transcriptomic response of the bdelloid rotifer Adineta vaga aboard the International Space Station.

BACKGROUND: The biological effects of spaceflight remain incompletely understood, even in humans (Homo sapiens), and are largely unexplored in non-traditional models such as bdelloid rotifers. RESULTS: This study analyzes the transcriptomic changes experienced by Adineta vaga, a bdelloid rotifer aboard the International Space Station (ISS), using RNA sequencing. The aim was to investigate the overall effect of spaceflight in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) on these organisms. To this end, new hardware was developed to enable autonomous culturing of rotifers with minimal astronaut intervention. The stud

Spaceflight Recovery Considerations for Acute Inhalational Exposure to Hydrazines.

INTRODUCTION: Inhalation of hydrazine or hydrazine-derivative (for example, monomethylhydrazine) vapors during spaceflight operations remains a risk to crew and ground support personnel. Here we sought to provide an evidence-based approach to inform acute clinical treatment guidelines for inhalational exposures during a noncatastrophic contingency spaceflight recovery scenario.METHODS: A review of published literature was conducted concerning hydrazine/hydrazine-derivative exposure and clinical sequelae. Priority was given to studies that described inhalation though studies of alternative rout

Host biomarkers of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis to monitor therapeutic response.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is a life-threatening disease of immunocompromised patients that requires aggressive therapy. Detection of the disease and monitoring of the therapeutic response during IPA are complex, and current molecular diagnostics are not suitably robust. Here, we explored proteomic profiles of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) specimens from a persistently neutropenic rabbit model of IPA. Three experimental arms, uninfected control animals, infected untreated animals, and animals infected and treated with ravuconazole/amphotericin B, were studied. Total proteins

[BEHAVIORAL AND FUNCTIONAL VESTIBULAR DISTURBANCES AFTER SPACE FLIGHT. 2. FISHES, AMPHIBIANS AND BIRDS].

The review contains data on functional shifts in fishes, amphibians and birds caused by changes in the otolith system operation after stay under weightlessness conditions. These data are of theoretical and practical significance and are important to resolve some fundamental problems of vestibulogy. The analysis of the results of space experiments has shown that weightlessness conditions do not exert a substantial impact on formation and functional state of the otolith system in embryonic fishes, amphibians and birds developed during space flight. Weightlessness conditions do pot inhibit embryo

Pectoralis muscle performance during ascending and slow level flight in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos).

In vivo measurements of pectoralis muscle length change and force production were obtained using sonomicrometry and delto-pectoral bone strain recordings during ascending and slow level flight in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). These measurements provide a description of the force/length properties of the pectoralis under dynamic conditions during two discrete flight behaviors and allow an examination of the effects of differences in body size and morphology on pectoralis performance by comparing the results with those of a recent similar study of slow level flight in pigeons (Columbia livia).
