Floods and infectious diseases: public health lessons from the 2024 southern Brazil disaster.

SUMMARYThe unprecedented floods that affected Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, in 2024 had significant repercussions on public health, particularly infectious diseases. In the weeks following the floods, 7,818 confirmed cases of leptospirosis, 10 outbreaks of diarrheal diseases, and 1,370 incidents involving venomous animals were reported, among other conditions. These events disrupted healthcare networks, caused critical delays in diagnosis, and impaired vaccination campaigns, emphasizing the need for resilient public health systems. This report describes the 2024 climate disaster in Rio Gran

Wind and rain compound with tides to cause frequent and unexpected coastal floods.

With sea-level rise, flooding in coastal communities is now common during the highest high tides. Floods also occur at normal tidal levels when rainfall overcomes stormwater infrastructure that is partially submerged by tides. Data describing this type of compound flooding is scarce and, therefore, it is unclear how often these floods occur and the extent to which non-tidal factors contribute to flooding. We combine measurements of flooding on roads and within storm drains with a numerical model to examine processes that contribute to flooding in Carolina Beach, NC, USA - a community that chro

Recent decreasing precipitation and snowmelt reduce the floods around the Chinese Tianshan Mountains.

Understanding and managing mountain floods has become increasingly urgent, with global climate change and human activities exacerbating flood risk. However, flood research in Tianshan Mountains, a typical flood-prone mountainous region in China, is still insufficient. Here, we customized a set of flood research methods based on rainstorms and extreme snowmelt events, including a new flood counting method that comprehensively considered the frequency and magnitude of floods and the methods of flood classification and change attribution. We found that floods around the Chinese Tianshan Mountains

Association between floods and the risk of dysentery in China: a meta-analysis.

The association between floods and the risk of dysentery remain controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to clarify this relationship. A literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of science, and Embase for relevant articles published up to November 2019. Random-effects model was used to pool relative risks with 95% confidence intervals. The sensitivity analysis was carried out to evaluate the stability of the results. Publication bias was estimated using Egger's test. Eleven studies from 10 articles evaluated the association between floods and the risk of dysentery in China.

Risk communication and risk perception: lessons from the 2011 floods in Brisbane, Australia.

Risk communication and risk perception are critical factors in disaster management. Governments at all levels play a part in communicating risk, whereas the perception of risk entails active roles by community participants, including potential and actual victims of disasters. This paper discusses these matters in relation to the floods in Brisbane, Australia, in 2011. The findings are based on interviews with representatives of households whose dwellings or business premises were fully or partially inundated by the waters. The research shows how important it is to recognise the problems of ins

Quantitative analysis of burden of bacillary dysentery associated with floods in Hunan, China.

BACKGROUND: Jishou and Huaihua, two cities in the west of Hunan Province, had suffered from severe floods because of long-lasting and heavy rainfall during the end of June and July 2012. However, the Disability Adjusted of Life Years (DALYs) of bacillary dysentery caused by the floods have not been examined before. The study aimed to quantify the impact of the floods on the burden of bacillary dysentery in Hunan, China. METHODS: A unidirectional case-crossover study was firstly conducted to determine the relationship between daily cases of bacillary dysentery and the floods in Jishou and Huai

Rapid assessment of mosquitoes and arbovirus activity after floods in southeastern Kansas, 2007.

A rapid assessment was conducted in July-August 2007 to determine the impact of heavy rains and early summer floods on the mosquitoes and arbovirus activity in 4 southeastern Kansas counties. During 10 days and nights of collections using different types and styles of mosquito traps, a total of 10,512 adult female mosquitoes representing 29 species were collected, including a new species record for Kansas (Psorophora mathesoni). High numbers of Aedes albopictus were collected. Over 4,000 specimens of 4 Culex species in 235 species-specific pools were tested for the presence of West Nile, St. L

Lessons in posttraumatic stress disorder from the past: Venezuela floods and Nairobi bombing.

Identification and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are important following a disaster. Insights into how these aims can be achieved may be obtained from previous disasters. This article describes mental health initiatives following the 1999 flooding in Vargas State, Venezuela, and the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombing in Nairobi, Kenya. Following the Vargas State floods, a specialist mental health center devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of PTSD was established. Awareness and acceptance of the clinic was promoted by media campaigns and community-based activities. Aft

The role of health sectors in disaster preparedness. Floods in southeastern China, 1991.

Disasters, whether natural or man-made, usually are unpredictable. Efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality from a disaster should be put forth before it occurs. A brief survey is presented of the worst flood to occur in a hundred years that affected eight provinces in Southeast China. The disaster preparedness and response for Anhui Province, the hardest hit area, is summarized. The disaster preparedness was comprehensive, and cooperation was achieved among various specialties: military forces; firefighters; civil engineers; mechanics; police; provincial governors; the medical sectors; and s

The effect of flooding on respiratory health in children and adults.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of severe storms and floods has steadily increased over the last decades world-wide because of climate change and global warming. Flooding events have important effects on respiratory health especially in vulnerable populations. Some health effects are immediate, such as respiratory infections, asthma attacks and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations. An important immediate risk arises for patients with technology dependent respiratory conditions if power supplies fail. Post-flood, indoor damp and mold develop in flooded homes creating a high risk of

Flood preparedness and public health policy, Greece.

Floods are among the most frequent and complex climate-related hazards, affecting health and health systems through infectious disease risks, water and chemical contamination, and disruption of essential services. Examining how international guidance reflects the operational realities of flood response, and how it supports countries in practice, is essential. While each event is unique, sharing experiences can strengthen preparedness and resilience. This paper draws lessons from an assessment of the response measures used during the 2023 floods in Greece. The coordination team rapidly adapted

Socioeconomic predictors of vulnerability to flood-induced displacement.

Floods displace an average of 12 million people every year, and are responsible for 54% of all disaster-induced displacements. Displacement risk scales with the vulnerability of exposed populations, but this vulnerability is poorly understood at a global scale. Here we show that measures of human development and rural areas explain more of the variance of displacement vulnerability than income levels measured by gross domestic product. We combine global flood and displacement data to estimate vulnerability, as the ratio of displacement to exposure, for over 300 historical flood events. We find

Quantitative constraints on flood variability in the rock record.

Floods determine river behaviour in time and space. Yet quantitative measures of discharge variability from geological stratigraphy are sparse, even though they are critical to understand landscape sensitivity to past and future environmental change. Here we show how storm-driven river floods in the geologic past can be quantified, using Carboniferous stratigraphy as an exemplar. The geometries of dune cross-sets demonstrate that discharge-driven disequilibrium dynamics dominated fluvial deposition in the Pennant Formation of South Wales. Based on bedform preservation theory, we quantify dune

The Flood-Related Behaviour of River Users in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Flooding is a common natural disaster affecting 77.8 million people and claiming the lives of 4,731 people globally in 2016. During times of flood, drowning is a leading cause of death. Flooding is a known risk factor for river drowning in Australia. With little known about river usage in Australia, this study aimed to examine the links between person demographics and self-reported participation in two flood-related behaviours, driving through floodwaters and swimming in a flooded river. METHODS: A self-reported questionnaire was administered to adult river users at four high-ri

Proteomic Techniques and Management of Flooding Tolerance in Soybean.

Climate change is considered a major threat to world agriculture and food security. To improve the agricultural productivity and sustainability, the development of high-yielding stress-tolerant, and climate-resilient crops is essential. Of the abiotic stresses, flooding stress is a very serious hazard because it markedly reduces plant growth and grain yield. Proteomic analyses indicate that the effects of flooding stress are not limited to oxygen deprivation but include many other factors. Although many flooding response mechanisms have been reported, flooding tolerance mechanisms have not bee

Flood-related skin diseases: a literature review.

Flood is one of the most common natural disasters, which commonly occurs in all parts of the world. The effects of the disasters considerably become enormous problems to overall public health systems. Flood-related skin diseases are a portion of these consequences presenting with cutaneous manifestations and/or signs of systemic illnesses. We conducted a systematic literature review of research publications relating to flooding and skin diseases. The purpose of this review was to provide dermatologists as well as general practitioners with comprehensive conditions of flood-related skin disease

The synthetic evaluation model for analysis of flooding hazards.

BACKGROUND: Although many previous epidemiological studies have reported the incidence of diseases, mortality rate and economic losses after natural disasters, none of these studies has been comprehensive enough. Our aim was to establish a synthetic evaluation model (SEM) that can be used to analyze flood hazards. METHODS: Initial evaluation indicators were selected using systematic and literature data analysis. These indicators were tested with single or multiple variable analyses. Final evaluation indicators and their weights were determined using the Delphi procedure. We established a SEM
