Priorities for the design and control of upper limb prostheses: A focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Common prosthetic options do not allow for enough independent control signals to control all the movements of the arm. Invasive approaches to obtain prosthetic control signals are being developed to provide people with upper limb loss improved prosthetic control and feedback. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: This study explored the prosthetic qualities that are important to users and examined the factors that play into the decision to consider invasive prosthetic interfaces that allow for enhanced prosthetic control. METHODS: Individuals participated in semi-structured focus groups or in in

Strategies to customize responsible gambling messages: a review and focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Responsible gambling messages are widely used as a tool to enable informed choice and encourage appropriate gambling behavior. It is generally accepted that gamblers have different levels of risk of developing gambling problems and require various harm minimization tools and resources. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that responsible gambling messages should be customized and target specific groups of gamblers. This project aimed to understand hypothesized differences between cohorts of gamblers and receive qualitative feedback on archetypal targeted messages used to increase

"People are all about appearances": A focus group of teenagers with Moebius Syndrome.

This focus group study examined the social experiences of 10 adolescents aged 12-17 years with Moebius Syndrome, a rare condition involving congenital facial paralysis. Content analysis revealed five themes: social engagement/disengagement, resilience/sensitivity, social support/stigma, being understood/misunderstood, and public awareness/lack of awareness of Moebius Syndrome. Compared to previous research on adults with Moebius Syndrome, adolescents were more likely to experience bullying and social strain. Like adults, teenagers displayed resilience and communication skills. Greater public a

Experiences of employees with arm, neck or shoulder complaints: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Many people suffer from complaints of the arm, neck or shoulder (CANS). CANS causes significant work problems, including absenteeism (sickness absence), presenteeism (decreased work productivity) and, ultimately, job loss. There is a need for intervention programs for people suffering from CANS. Management of symptoms and workload, and improving the workstyle, could be important factors in the strategy to deal with CANS. The objective of this study is to evaluate the experienced problems of employees with CANS, as a first step in an intervention mapping process aimed at adaptation

BACKGROUND: To date, medical schools and clinical training hospitals in Japan that require students to show immunity for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), and hepatitis B prior to the commencement of residency are limited. METHODS: This qualitative study used focus group interviews to elucidate why medical students do not undergo vaccination. A total of three groups were identified and interviewed: group A (two men, three women), group B (two men, two women), group C (three men, two women). All recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed according to the constant

The Patients' VOICE on Carotid Surgery; Insights From Focus Group Discussions.

IntroductionOutcomes of carotid surgery are commonly evaluated using clinical parameters such as mortality and stroke, and these are mostly based on doctors' and scientific perspectives. Patient-centered health care aims to value the evaluation from the patients' perspective, mostly using Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs). The aim of this study was to gain insights into outcomes that patients undergoing carotid surgery consider important (PROs) and to verify these outcomes by patients themselves. Methods and OutcomesThese protocol-based, exploratory semi-structured, focus group discussions (FGDs

The paradox of workplace violence in the intensive care unit: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Conflicts with patients and relatives occur frequently in intensive care units (ICUs), driven by factors that are intensified by critical illness and its treatments. A majority of ICU healthcare professionals have experienced verbal and/or physical violence. There is a need to understand how healthcare professionals in ICUs experience and manage this workplace violence. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive analysis of four hospitals in Sweden was conducted using semi-structured focus-group interviews with ICU healthcare professionals. RESULTS: A total of 34 participants (14 nurses,

Dutch individuals' views of screening for oesophageal cancer: a focus group study.

OBJECTIVE: Screening for early oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC), including its precursor Barrett's oesophagus (BO), can potentially reduce OAC-related morbidity and mortality. This study explores Dutch at-risk individuals' views of screening an at-risk population for BO/OAC. DESIGN: We invited 372 individuals with risk factors for OAC from primary care practices, 73 individuals with surveillance experience, and 221 participants of previous studies (BO/OAC screening trial or survey) to participate in focus groups. Transcripts were inductively and thematically analysed by two independent resear

Transitioning Focus Group Research to a Videoconferencing Environment: A Descriptive Analysis of Interactivity.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted face-to-face interactions in healthcare research, with many studies shifting to video-based data collection for qualitative research. This study describes the interactivity achieved in a videoconferencing focus group of seven primary care providers discussing deprescribing opioids and benzodiazepines. Researchers reviewed video footage of a focus group conducted via Zoom and assessed interactivity using Morgan's framework for focus group communication processes. Two reviewers categorized the type of exchanges as sharing information, comparing experiences, organi

Suicide by crashing into a heavy vehicle: a focus group study of professional drivers.

Professional heavy vehicle drivers can experience a traumatic event at work when suicidal drivers deliberately crash into their vehicles or a pedestrian jumps in front of them. This study adopts a qualitative approach, aiming to gain an understanding about the psychological and other consequences that these crashes have for this occupational group. We organized a semi-structured focus group meeting with six drivers who reported experiencing a deliberate crash into their vehicle. The meeting was moderated by two psychologists. The participants reported that avoiding the crash was difficult. The

Older Adults' Perspectives on Clinical Research: A Focus Group and Survey Study.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical trials can benefit from patient perspectives to inform trial design, such as choice of outcome measures. We engaged older adults in focus groups and surveys to get their perspective regarding needs in clinical research. The goal was to inform the development of a new clinical trial of medication strategies for treatment-resistant depression in older adults. METHODS: Older adults with depression participated in focus groups and a subsequent survey in St. Louis and New York. They were queried regarding research design features including outcomes, clinical management, mobile

Unmet diagnostic needs in cystic fibrosis infections and exacerbations: focus groups to inform target product profiles (TPPs).

BACKGROUND: In addition to new antimicrobials for people with Cystic Fibrosis (pwCF), new diagnostics are needed to detect and diagnose infections, guide clinical care, and inform clinical decision making. To determine unmet diagnostic needs in pulmonary infection and exacerbation diagnostics in Cystic Fibrosis (CF), the required diagnostic test characteristics and priorities of different stakeholders involved in the care of pwCF were collected and analysed. METHODS: Three focus groups (two clinical and one pwCF) were conducted and used to inform a wider project to deliver a suite of target p
