Understanding factors affecting engagement with food-related services in areas of deprivation: A mixed-methods approach.

Poor dietary health is disproportionately higher in low-income adults, who often face multiple barriers to accessing affordable, nutritious food. Food-related services aim to address these challenges, but engagement remains inconsistent. Understanding the drivers of (non)engagement is critical to improving service design and delivery. This mixed-methods study explored factors influencing engagement with food-related services among low-income adults living in deprived areas. A cross-sectional survey (n = 77) measured capability, opportunity, and motivation to engage with services using the COM-

Less than One Meal Per Day: Food Insecurity and Deprivation Among Indigenous Oaxacan Farmworkers in California.

Food insecurity and lack of wellbeing among farmworker populations, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, are well documented. However, Indigenous migrant farmworker communities remain an understudied group, despite comprising over 40% of the current migrant farmworker labor workforce in California. This mixed-methods study assessed wellbeing and food insecurity among 40 Oaxacan Indigenous migrant farmworker households in the California Central Valley from 2022 to 2023. This study is the first of its kind utilizing the common Self-Reliance Index (SRI) among Indigenous migrant farmworkers.

Measuring discrimination- and reversal learning in mouse models within 4 days and without prior food deprivation.

Many neurological and psychiatric disorders are characterized by deficits in cognitive flexibility. Modeling cognitive flexibility in mice enables the investigation of mechanisms underlying these deficits. The majority of currently available behavioral tests targeting this cognitive domain are reversal learning tasks that require scheduled food restriction, extended training periods and labor-intensive, and stress-inducing animal handling. Here, we describe a novel 4-day (4-d) continuously running task measuring discrimination- and reversal learning in an automated home cage (CognitionWall DL/

Partial sleep deprivation by environmental noise increases food intake and body weight in obesity-resistant rats.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep restriction in humans increases risk for obesity, but previous rodent studies show weight loss following sleep deprivation, possibly due to stressful methods used to prevent sleep. Obesity-resistant (OR) rats exhibit consolidated-sleep and resistance to weight gain. It was hypothesized that sleep disruption by a less-stressful method would increase body weight, and the effect of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on body weight in OR and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats was examined. DESIGN AND METHODS: OR and SD rats (n = 12/group) were implanted with transmitters to record sleep/wake.

Peptidomics of Cpe fat/fat mouse hypothalamus: effect of food deprivation and exercise on peptide levels.

Carboxypeptidase E is a major enzyme in the biosynthesis of numerous neuroendocrine peptides. Previously, we developed a technique for the isolation of neuropeptide-processing intermediates from mice that lack carboxypeptidase E activity (Cpe fat/fat mice) due to a naturally occurring point mutation. In the present study, we used a differential labeling procedure with stable isotopic tags and mass spectrometry to quantitate the relative changes in a number of hypothalamic peptides in Cpe fat/fat mice in two different paradigms that each cause an approximately 10% decrease in body mass. Feeding induced by food deprivation is differentially reduced by opioid receptor antisense oligodeoxynucleotide probes in rats.

The increases in food intake following 24 h of food deprivation are reduced by systemic and central administration of general opioid antagonists. The use of selective opioid antagonists revealed that mu-selective antagonists were more effective than kappa-selective antagonists in reducing deprivation-induced intake, whereas delta-selective antagonists were minimally effective. Antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (AS ODN) probes directed against different exons of the mu (MOP), delta (DOP), kappa (KOP) and nociceptin (NOP) opioid peptide receptor genes have been able to differentially alter feeding

The effects of vitamin C administration, acute food deprivation, and acute food intake on vitamin C levels in different brain areas of guinea pigs.

Vitamin C is crucial for the brain. We aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin C administration following 24 hours of acute food deprivation and 24 hours of acute food intake on changes in vitamin C levels in different brain areas of guinea pigs. Vitamin C was administered as a single intraperitoneal dose (500 mg kg(-1) body weight) both before acute food deprivation and before acute food intake. At the end of our study, we measured the vitamin C levels in cerebral cortex lobes, brain stem structures, hypophysis, hypothalamus, cerebellum, hippocampus, and amygdala. Vitamin C levels in the

A 'meta-analysis' of effects of post-hatch food and water deprivation on development, performance and welfare of chickens.

A 'meta-analysis' was performed to determine effects of post-hatch food and water deprivation (PHFWD) on chicken development, performance and welfare (including health). Two types of meta-analysis were performed on peer-reviewed scientific publications: a quantitative 'meta-analysis' (MA) and a qualitative analysis (QA). Previously reported effects of PHFWD were quantified in the MA, for variables related to performance, mortality and relative yolk sac weight. The QA counted the number of studies reporting (non-)significant effects when five or more records were available in the data set (i.e.

Reduced motivation in the BACHD rat model of Huntington disease is dependent on the choice of food deprivation strategy.

Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor, cognitive, psychiatric and metabolic symptoms. Animal models of HD show phenotypes that can be divided into similar categories, with the metabolic phenotype of certain models being characterized by obesity. Although interesting in terms of modeling metabolic symptoms of HD, the obesity phenotype can be problematic as it might confound the results of certain behavioral tests. This concerns the assessment of cognitive function in particular, as tests for such phenotypes are often based on food depriving the

Effects of sibutramine and rimonabant in rats trained to discriminate between 22- and 2-h food deprivation.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate whether sibutramine and rimonabant, drugs that decrease food intake in human and non-human animals, affect the discriminative stimulus effects associated with acute food deprivation ("hunger"). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats were trained to discriminate between 22- and 2-h food deprivation in a two-lever choice procedure. After rats acquired the discrimination, subjects were food-restricted for 22 h and administered with sibutramine (0.32-10 mg/kg, p.o.) or rimonabant (0.32-10 mg/kg, s.c.) before a generalization test session. RESULTS: Sibut

Behaviourally-selective hypophagic effects of naloxone in non-deprived male rats presented with palatable food.

Endogenous opioids have long been implicated in mechanisms of appetite control. A significant strand in the evidence base has been the hypophagic action of broad-spectrum opioid receptor antagonists (such as naloxone) in opiate-naïve animals. However, while much has been learned about sites of action, underlying receptor mechanisms and the role of taste hedonics, surprisingly little is known about the behavioural selectivity of naloxone-induced hypophagia. As such, two experiments employed detailed video analysis to profile the behavioural effects of naloxone (Experiment 1: 1.0-5.0 mg/kg; Expe

Changes in adipokine expression during food deprivation in the mouse and the relationship to fasting-induced insulin resistance.

We investigated the changes in insulin resistance and adipose tissue expression of the adipokines resistin, adiponectin, and leptin and the transcription factors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) and retinoid X receptor-alpha (RXR-alpha) during 48 h of food deprivation. Insulin sensitivity (SI) declined, whereas glucose effectiveness (SG) increased. Plasma adiponectin levels declined in the first 8 h and remained constant thereafter. There was no correlation between either SI or SG and adiponectin protein or mRNA levels. PPAR-gamma mRNA abundance remained constant,

Food intake in free-feeding and energy-deprived lean rats is mediated by the neuropeptide Y5 receptor.

The new neuropeptide Y (NPY) Y5 receptor antagonist CGP 71683A displayed high affinity for the cloned rat NPY Y5 subtype, but > 1, 000-fold lower affinity for the cloned rat NPY Y1, Y2, and Y4 subtypes. In LMTK cells transfected with the human NPY Y5 receptor, CGP 71683A was without intrinsic activity and antagonized NPY-induced Ca2+ transients. CGP 71683A was given intraperitoneally (dose range 1-100 mg/kg) to a series of animal models of high hypothalamic NPY levels. In lean satiated rats CGP 71683A significantly antagonized the increase in food intake induced by intracerebroventricular inje

Phentermine self-administration in naive free-feeding and food-deprived rats: a dose response study.

In the present experiment graded doses of phentermine, an anorectic similar to amphetamine in structure and mechanism of action, were made available to naive free-feeding (FF) or 80% free-feeding weight (FFW) rats for IV self-administration. Findings showed that, in 80% FFW rats, the number of injections taken were an inverted U-shaped function of dose, whereas the amount of drug injected was a monotonically increasing function of dose. FF animals, however, failed to self-administer phentermine at rates that differed significantly from FF animals self-administering saline. These data suggest t

Intravenous self-administration of phentermine in food-deprived rats: effects of abrupt refeeding and saline substitution.

The objectives in these experiments were to determine the effects on intravenous phentermine self-administration of abrupt refeeding and of saline substitution in food-deprived rats. In Experiment 1, 32 naive rats, reduced to 80% free-feeding weight (FFW), were assigned randomly to four equal-sized groups. Two groups self-administered phentermine, the other two saline over two consecutive six-day phases. In phase 1, all animals were maintained at 80% FFW, while in phase 2, one phentermine- and one saline-reinforced group was abruptly food satiated. Results showed that phentermine self-administ

Effects in vivo of food deprivation and 3-mercaptopicolinate in the glycogen-storage-disease (gsd/gsd) rat.

Intraperitoneal injection of 3-mercaptopicolinate into 24 h-food-deprived 27-week-old female control (GSD/GSD) rats lowered the concentration of circulating glucose by 66%, but glycerol and lactate concentrations were increased up to 3- and 4-fold respectively. In phosphorylase b kinase-deficient (gsd/gsd) rats the corresponding changes for blood glucose, lactate and glycerol were half those observed in the controls. Although the concentration of liver glycogen (approx. 12%, w/w) in the gsd/gsd rats was not altered during food deprivation, total hepatic glycogen was decreased by 17%. It is sug

Reinstatement of cocaine seeking in 129X1/SvJ mice: effects of cocaine priming, cocaine cues and food deprivation.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The mechanisms underlying relapse to cocaine seeking induced by exposure to priming cocaine injections, cues associated with cocaine self-administration and environmental stressors have been studied in rats. Here we describe a reinstatement method for studying relapse to cocaine seeking in mice, a suitable species for studying the effect of genetic manipulations such as gene knockout or gene over-expression on compulsive drug use. METHODS: Male mice of the 129X1/SvJ strain were trained for 14-16 days to self-administer cocaine (0.75 mg/kg/infusion; 4 h/day; fixed-rat
