The genus Phodopus consists of three species--P. campbelli (Pc), P. sungorus (Ps), and P. roborovskii (Pr). They inhabit steppes, semi-deserts, and deserts in continental Asia with a climate changing from a moderate to a hard Continental one with extreme daily and seasonal variations. These different environmental challenges are likely to have consequences for hamsters' morphology, physiology, and behavior. Hamsters of all three species were investigated during the course of the year in the laboratory though using natural lighting and temperature conditions. Motor activity and body temperature

Food security in ancient urban centers is often discussed but rarely formally modelled. Despite its location in an inhospitable desert where food production is a constant challenge ancient Palmyra grew from a small oasis settlement in to a major geopolitical player. Here, we present a spatially explicit reconstruction of the land use and agricultural yield expectations of its hinterland determining the maximum feasible population of the city. Coupling the hinterland carrying capacity model with palaeoclimatic data allowed us to track changes in the food security of the city in the face of chan

INTRODUCTION: Participation in ultra-endurance running events, or ultramarathons, has grown substantially in recent decades. These events often take place in challenging environments, such as deserts with extreme heat, which place considerable physiological and psychological stress on participants. Combined with high training demands and limited access to nutrition and hydration, such activity can have short- or long-term health consequences.
OBJECTIVE: To qualitatively examine the nutrition practices and experiences of five ultra-endurance runners in their preparation for, participation in,

Internal exposure to ionising radiation occurs predominantly through the consumption of contaminated crops, and evaluating soil-to-plant radionuclide transfer is essential for radiological risk assessment. This study investigated radionuclide activity concentrations, soil-to-plant concentration ratios (CRs), and the potential annual effective dose from food ingestion in a semiarid agricultural region. High-resolution alpha- and gamma-spectrometry (HPGe) was used to quantify 210Po, 234Th, 226Ra, 228Th, 228Ra, 210Pb, 40 K, and 137Cs in soil and in commonly consumed crops, including coriander, re

We monitored nest boxes during 1997-1999 at Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert Island, ME and at an old-field site in Orono, ME to determine mercury (Hg) uptake in tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) eggs, tissues, and food boluses. Also, in 1998-1999 we monitored nest boxes at Grove Pond and Plow Shop Pond at a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site in Ayer, MA. We recorded breeding success at all locations. On average among locations, total mercury (THg) biomagnified 2 to 4-fold from food to eggs and 9 to 18-fold from food to feathers. These are minimum values because the proportio

The growing pediatric obesity epidemic has paralleled the surge in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis. It develops due to nutritional imbalances, microbiome dysbiosis, gene regulation, hormonal changes, and environmental factors like food deserts, low activity level, and an unhealthy lifestyle. The prevalence of MASLD and obesity is rising every year. Lifestyle changes remain the mainstay treatment for obesity and MASLD. Per the 2023 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Practice Guidance on MASLD

Safer and more efficient products and processes are current global demands that drive the field of bioprospective research. Microbial sources are the main natural alternative solutions that have contributed to this biotechnological line, with environmental fungi representing important promising forces. Particularly, those inhabiting the most unexplored extreme geographical areas of the planet, marked by severe aridity, with hot and/or cold thermal profiles, e.g., the Atacama Desert, Saudi Arabia, Taklamakan Desert, semi-arid regions (Caatinga and Mexico), and polar and alpine ecosystems. Meriones rex (King jird), Meriones libycus (Libyan jird), Acomys dimidiatus (Eastern spiny mouse), Acomys cahirinus (Egyptian spiny mouse), and Dipodillus dasyurus (Wagner's dipodil) are five species of small rodents of the superfamily Muroidea with distributions in Eastern Africa, Egypt, and the desert regions of the Arabian Peninsula. Water is scarce in these regions and may result in relatively low-digestible food. The aim of the present study is to describe and compare the gastrointestinal tract morphology and morphometry of these five species in order to elucidate whether morphology is in

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Several species of the stapeliads, a group of stem succulents belonging to the family Apocynaceae are reported on in the ethnopharmacology literature and many of the references relate to their use as food plants. The most important of these plants is Hoodia gordonii, which during the past decade has risen from an almost forgotten spiny, desert plant to an important commercial appetite-suppressant herbal. The aim of this review is to summarize the botany, ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry of Hoodia gordonii.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Journal articles and books were used to c

In less agroecological parts of the Asian, Arabian, and African deserts, Camelus dromedarius play an important role in human survival. For many years, camels have been employed as a source of food, a tool of transportation, and a means of defense. They are becoming increasingly important as viable livestock animals in many desert climates. With the help of camel genetics, genomics and proteomics known so far, this review article will summarize camel enzymes and proteins, which allow them to thrive under varied harsh environmental situations. An in-depth study of the dromedary genome revealed t

Immigrants attempting to cross the border often wander for days without food or water, subsequently developing acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to rhabdomyolysis. In this article, we describe our experience with myoglobinuric AKI in these border crossers. Records from all patients in the custody of the border patrol from 1 June 2010 to 30 June 2011, who had AKI defined by the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) criteria and a CK > 1000 IU/L, were reviewed. The age, gender, temperature, days in the desert, initial serum creatinine, CK on presentation, need for dialysis, length of hospital sta

Reduced access to school meals during public health emergencies can accelerate food insecurity and nutritional status, particularly for low-income children in urban areas. To prevent the exacerbation of health disparities, there is a need to understand the implementation of meal distribution among large urban school districts during emergencies and to what degree these strategies provide equitable meal access. Our case study of four large urban school districts during the COVID-19 pandemic aims to address these knowledge gaps. Guided by the Getting to Equity (GTE) framework, we conducted a mix

Increasing interest in consuming insects is accelerating the expansion of the fortified snacks market. However, there is limited knowledge of the drivers of consumers to appreciate the role of desert locust [DL] Schistocerca gregaria Forskål as emerging functional ingredient for use in the food industry. Here, we evaluated the nutrient profile and functional properties of wheat breads fortified with powder from captive mass reared DL. The crude protein values of processed DL meal fed on three different food plants ranged between 40 and 56 %. The specific volume and firmness of the breads corre

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is quickly emerging as a global public health concern, primarily fueled by the rising consumption of processed and ultraprocessed foods. This global health issue, showing a 50% increase in prevalence over two decades to 38% of the global population, is now the second most common cause of end-stage liver disease and liver transplants in Europe and the United States and an emerging driver of hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly in Hispanic and non-Hispanic White populations. Its prevalence, driven by increasing consumption of ult

The desert rodents Psammomys obesus and Gerbillus tarabuli live under extreme conditions and overcome food and water shortage by modes of food and fluid intake specific to each species. Using immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy, we found that the hypothalamic magnocellular nuclei, and in particular, their vasopressinergic component, is highly and similarly developed in Psammomys and Gerbillus. In comparison to other rodents, the hypothalamus in both species contains more magnocellular VP neurons that, together with oxytocin neurons, accumulate in distinct and extensive nuclei. As in d

In 1981, Weinsier and Krumdieck described death resulting from overzealous total parenteral nutrition in two chronically malnourished, but stable, patients given aggressive total parenteral nutrition. This was the birth of what is now called the refeeding syndrome, a nutrition-related disorder associated with severe electrolyte disturbances. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that refeeding syndrome was first described medically in Florence by Antonio Benivieni in 1507 in his book On Some Hidden and Remarkable Causes of Diseases and Cures. What we now know as refeeding syndrome was des

A total of 119 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated, by culture-dependant method, from rhizosphere samples of olive trees and desert truffles and evaluated for different biotechnological properties. Using the variability of the intergenic spacer 16S-23S and 16S rRNA gene sequences, the isolates were identified as the genera Lactococcus, Pediococcus, Lactobacillus, Weissella, and Enterococcus. All the strains showed proteolytic activity with variable rates 42% were EPS producers, while only 10% showed the ability to grow in 9% NaCl. In addition, a low rate of antibiotic resistance was detec

Lycium ruthenicum Murr., commonly known as black goji berry, is a solanaceous shrub distributed in saline-alkaline desert environments of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and other arid regions. Its growing interest as a functional food resource is closely related to a rich nutritional profile and a phytochemical pattern that differs from that of the common red goji berry (Lycium barbarum). The most distinctive feature is the abundance of anthocyanins, particularly petunidin-derived compounds, which contribute to its dark fruit color and many of its reported biological properties. This review brings

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 caused a significant impact on food security; particularly among low- and middle-income countries. The objective of the current study was to assess both the direct and indirect impact of COVID-19 on individuals' food security in the metropolitan and regional context of Ethiopia.
METHODS: This project utilized a retrospective study design with a mixed methods approach. It assessed the food insecurity experience of individuals both before and after the emergence of COVID-19 through the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). Food sellers were interviewed to identify the fa
