Polybutylene succinate/fractionated nano lignin@Ag composite films with tunable functions for active food packaging.

The development of eco-friendly and multifunctional food packaging materials is a major focus of contemporary research. This study presents tunable polybutylene succinate/fractionated nano lignin@Ag (PBS/NLs@Ag) composite films for active food packaging. The structural differences in fractionated lignin allowed functional tuning of the derived nanomaterials, leading to distinct performance advantages in the composite films. Low molecular-weight lignin-derived NLs@Ag endowed the composite with superior antibacterial efficacy (97.5 % inhibition of E. coli, 96.2 % inhibition of S. aureus) and ant

Recyclable Multilayer Packaging by Means of Thermoreversibly Crosslinking Adhesive in the Context of Food Law.

Lacking recyclability of multilayer packaging can be overcome by using a thermoreversible crosslinking adhesive consisting of maleimide- and furan-functionalized polyurethane-(PU-)prepolymers, reacting in a Diels-Alder-reaction. Here, the furan-functionalized PU-prepolymer carries furan-side-chains to avoid the usage of an additional crosslinking agent. Thus, N‑(2‑hydroxyethyl)maleimide and furfurylamine are the only two chemicals contained in the adhesive that are not listed in the appendix of EU Regulation 10/2011. Using migration modelling, it could be shown that, at 23 °C, both chemicals h

Electrospun-derived cashew gum/poly(vinyl alcohol) films as high‑oxygen-barrier flexible food packaging.

In the search for sustainable alternatives to fossil-based packaging, valorizing underutilized polysaccharides is often limited by trade-offs between mechanical performance and barrier properties. This work presents a previously underexplored route to convert cashew gum (CG), an abundant agro-industrial by-product, into high-performance continuous films by blending it with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH), electrospinning, and thermal annealing of fibers. Three formulations were developed targeting high CG content (over 30% w/w) and electrospinning stability. The influence of solution properties (po

Development of a Long-term Migration Test Method for Plastic Food Utensils, Containers, and Packaging.

To ensure the safety of plastic food utensils, containers, and packaging, migration testing is essential for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of chemical substances that migrate from these materials into foods. In the context of foods with shelf lives ranging from several months to several years, conducting actual long-term migration tests is particularly challenging. It is therefore necessary to establish accelerated test conditions that yield equivalent migration levels. In order to establish such accelerated test conditions, results obtained from long-term migration tests using foo

Emerging Strategies for Tailoring Functionality in Protein-Polysaccharide Biocomposite Films for Food Packaging: A Review.

Environmental concerns regarding petroleum-based plastics have accelerated the search for renewable food packaging materials. Protein-polysaccharide composites are strong candidates due to their inherent biodegradability and film-forming properties. Blending these biopolymers offers a pathway to balanced structural and functional performance; yet practical application remains limited by poor moisture resistance, limited mechanical stability, and interfacial incompatibility. This review critically examines recent advances in double-based protein-polysaccharide composite films, with particular e

Biomimetic Design and Assessment via Microenvironmental Testing: From Food Packaging Biomaterials to Implantable Medical Devices.

Biomaterials and biomedical devices interact with the human body at different levels. At one end of the spectrum, medical devices in contact with tissue pose risks depending on whether they are deployed on the skin or implanted. On the other hand, food packaging and associated material technologies must also be biocompatible to prevent the transfer of harmful molecules and contamination of food, which could impact human health. These seemingly unlinked domains converge into a shared need for the elaboration of new laboratory evaluation protocols that consider recent advances in biomaterials an
