Insects and Human Society: Ecological Services, Nutritional Value, Livelihood Support and Cultural Significance from Global Perspectives to Rural Venda, South Africa.

Insects are fundamental to ecosystem functioning and human welfare, yet their multifaceted contributions to ecological services, food security, rural livelihoods, and cultural heritage remain insufficiently represented in mainstream scientific research and policy. Despite growing global recognition of insect decline and the potential of entomophagy to address food system challenges, integrated evidence linking global ecological knowledge with community-level indigenous practices is lacking, particularly in sub-Saharan African contexts. A narrative bibliometric review was conducted through syst

Food safety: review and implications for dietitians and dietetic technicians.

Section 103 (d) of the Americans with Disabilities Act directs the secretary of health and human services to identify, publish, and annually review a list of pathogens transmitted via food contaminated by infected food handlers. The secretary is also directed to publish means by which diseases on the list are transmitted. The intent of the list is to protect disabled food handlers when they become ill and to provide managers with information for determining when to remove or reassign disabled food handlers who have infectious or communicable diseases to jobs that do not involve handling food.

Understanding Food Insecurity in Westminster, UK: A Community-Informed Systems Thinking Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is increasing in the United Kingdom and is a growing public health concern. In Westminster, a highly diverse London borough, rates continue to rise in the most deprived areas, such as the Church Street ward, despite increasing food support and local policies. METHODS: This study used a community-informed systems thinking approach to understand the local dynamics. 26 stakeholders from 6 local services participated in group model-building (GMB) workshops and interviews to provide insight into how services and policies interact with the structural drivers of food in

"Nothing is going to change three months from now": A mixed methods characterization of food bank use in Greater Vancouver.

North American food bank use has risen dramatically since the 1980s, and over 850,000 Canadians were estimated to have visited a food bank monthly in 2015. Food banks serve multiple roles in communities, ranging from 'emergency responses' to individualized and short-term experiences of hunger, to 'chronic' supports as part of long-term subsistence strategies. This study used a mixed-methods design to examine the spectrum of food bank user experiences in a large urban context, as part of a community-based project aiming to envision a redesign of the food bank to contribute to broader community

The present and future organisation of Veterinary Services in Asia: the examples of the Republic of Korea and Japan.

The Veterinary Services of the Republic of Korea and Japan are reviewed and summarised. To cope with ever-increasing demands on Veterinary Services, both countries have made continued efforts to expand the services, which currently only have a limited number of government personnel. To overcome some of the problems associated with international trade, e.g. outbreaks of foot and mouth disease and classical swine fever (hog cholera), the authorities of the Republic of Korea are considering strengthening quarantine services by combining the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service and

Food Is More Than Just Medicine.

State Medicaid agencies are increasingly developing Food Is Medicine programs with the aim of improving health outcomes and lowering health-related costs for low-income people. The role of food in people's lives is influenced by a complex interplay of socio-ecological systems, including personal values and beliefs, social interactions, and community development. To make Food Is Medicine programs in Medicaid more effective, states can integrate a more nuanced understanding of the larger role that food plays in society into their Food Is Medicine program design and implementation. This includes

Considerations for diverse, equitable, and inclusive school food programs in the USA and Canada.

School food programs have been shown to support the nutrition of children and their long-term health outcomes in tandem with reducing nutritional inequities experienced by low-income, food insecure, and racialized populations. Understanding the specific needs and outcomes of these equity-deserving groups is crucial when enhancing program implementation and participation in school food programs. A scoping review of equitable, diverse, and inclusive considerations for school food programs was conducted on Canadian and American peer-reviewed and grey literature. The search strategy identified 18

The role of food as part of person-centred palliative care: An exploratory ethnographic study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is about more than providing high-quality medical care; it is about maximizing quality of life while dying. The role that food plays in palliative care is not well studied or understood. Most research on food in palliative care focuses on nutrition, rather than the importance of serving food that patients recognize, enjoy, and want to consume. This study aimed to understand the role of food as an integral part of person-centred palliative care. METHODS: We engaged with patients, caregivers, staff, and hospital decision-makers at the Bruyère Health Palliative Care U

Long-Haul Truck Drivers' Perceptions of Truck Stops and Rest Areas: Focusing on Health and Wellness.

The work and life routine of long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs) involve the use of truck stops and rest areas to meet their basic human needs. These extensions of their workspaces on the road do not always offer adequate physical structures and services that drivers need for optimal health. This study aimed to evaluate long-haul truck drivers' perceptions of food services, safety, physical activity, rest, and personal hygiene offered at truck stops and rest areas, as well as the correlation between these perceptions and sociodemographic, health, and work conditions variables. A Needs Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes Prevention at a Community Food Bank in British Columbia, Canada.

People experiencing food insecurity experience higher rates of type 2 diabetes (T2D) than those who are food secure. Small Steps for Big Changes (SSBC) is a T2D prevention program in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. This study aimed to learn the factors that influenced people experiencing food insecurity in the community's ability to engage in T2D prevention behaviors, participate in SSBC, and the food bank's ability to provide T2D prevention services to their users. Focus groups were held with food bank users and interviews with food bank employees to learn these factors. The focus groups a

Health Conditions and Service Use Among Intimate Partner Violence Shelter Residents.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been linked to substantial physical, social, and mental health concerns across the lifespan. Health impacts of IPV are linked to economic and housing instability. Emergency shelter is primarily focused on the safety and stabilization of the most vulnerable IPV survivors. Despite frequent use of shelter interventions, little is known about the health service experiences of IPV survivors in shelters, including the extent to which these services are perceived as helpful. To address these gaps, we surveyed 214 IPV shelter residents in a Southern state. We asked

Microbial Quality of Food Establishments in Dubai.

In the recent past, Dubai has become a global hub of culinary excellence, and it needs to continue to maintain high food microbial quality to protect its reputation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbial quality of food contact surfaces and the hygienic status of the food environment (including food handlers) across various food service establishments (restaurants, cafeterias, and supermarkets) that offer ready-to-eat food in Dubai. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using 947 swab samples from 308 establishments, including 777 restaurants, 78 cafeterias, 44 cafeteria-cum-r

Development of a statewide network hub for screening, referral, and enrollment into food as medicine programs across Kentucky.

UNLABELLED: Widespread recognition of food as medicine interventions' role in reducing food insecurity and improving health outcomes has recently emerged. Several states have released In Lieu of Services, state-approved alternative services that may be offered by managed care organizations in place of covered benefits, or 1,115 Medicaid waivers, which may allow for expanded nutrition services to reduce food insecurity and improve health outcomes. However, there are significant gaps in understanding how to create a statewide system for delivering "healthcare by food" interventions. The Universi
