Injuries associated with the 580 km university student grand voluntary road march: focus on foot injuries.

College student volunteers (n = 142) completed a 580 km road march for 21 consecutive days. Each volunteer carried a backpack that weighed 14.1 ± 1.4 kg on the average. We investigated the incidence and location of blisters associated with the road march using a foot map along with other injuries. Overall, 95.1% of the subjects (135 of 142) sustained one or more injuries. All injured subjects had foot blisters, and 18% had other foot injuries. The most common locations of blister development were the right 5th toe (61%) and the left 5th toe (57%). The little toes seem to have been subjected to

Combat-related foot injuries: impact on gait and functional outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Prior to deployment of the Netherlands Army Task Force Urozgan in Afghanistan, the Dutch Military and civilian healthcare systems had limited experience in treating blast injuries and their long-term consequences. This meant that guidelines for treatment and rehabilitation were lacking. The aim of this cohort study was to quantify kinematic and kinetic abnormalities in service members with foot injuries in relation to functional outcome using gait analysis. METHOD: In nine service members with combat-related talus, calcaneus and/or navicular bone (TCN) fractures and nine control

On equal footing: Trends in ankle/foot injuries for men vs. women.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the current study was to examine trends in ankle/foot (A/F) injuries during the period 2001-2014, in order to determine whether the incidence of these injuries has changed and whether a previously identified difference in risk by gender still existed. In addition, other driver and crash-related risk factors were examined separately for men and women. METHODS: Passenger vehicle drivers aged 16+ were identified from NASS-CDS; weighted data were analyzed for model years 2001-2014. Model years (MY) were grouped as 2001-2004 (older) vs. 2005-2014 (newer), and drivers i

Imaging evaluation of traumatic ligamentous injuries of the ankle and foot.

Sports ankle injuries are very common worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that 2 million acute ankle sprains occur each year, averaging to $318 to $914 per sprain. Magnetic resonance imaging is excellent for depicting normal ankle anatomy and can elegantly demonstrate ligamentous injuries of the ankle and associated conditions after ankle sprain. This article encompasses epidemiology, biomechanics, normal anatomy, and pathologic conditions of the ankle and foot ligaments. The specific ligaments discussed include the syndesmotic ligaments, lateral ligament complex of the ankle, del

Treatment algorithm for complex injuries of the foot in paediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Complex injuries of the foot in the paediatric population present difficult treatment challenges. While standardised protocols exist for the adult population to achieve an optimal result in the treatment of such injuries, therapy in paediatric patientsmust be managed without a firm treatment algorithm. METHODS: Medical records of all patients with a complex trauma of the foot treated at our Department over a period of 13 years were evaluated. A complex trauma of the foot was defined using the scoring system developed by Zwipp et al. (1997).24 Treatment and outcome were analysed. A

Management of common sports-related injuries about the foot and ankle.

Foot and ankle injuries are commonplace in competitive sports. Improvements in injury surveillance programs and injury reporting have enabled physicians to better recognize and manage specific foot and ankle injuries, with a primary goal of efficient and safe return to play. Athletes are becoming stronger, faster, and better conditioned, and higher-energy injuries are becoming increasingly common. Close attention is required during examination to accurately identify such injuries as turf toe, ankle injuries, tarsometatarsal (ie, Lisfranc) injuries, and stress fractures. Early diagnosis and man

Foot-ankle injuries: influence of crash location, seating position and age.

Foot-ankle injuries have increased in relative importance in recent years. As a basis for future countermeasures, an epidemiology study has been undertaken using Swedish accident data from Folksam Insurance. The database consists of 805 foot-ankle injuries out of 57,949 car occupant injuries reported from 1985 to 1991. The influence of crash location, seating position and occupant age is determined for the frequency, incidence and rate of foot-ankle injury in car crashes. Frontal car crashes produce 76% of the AIS 2-3 foot-ankle injuries with 13% in side impacts and 8% in roll-overs. The rate
