Unusual pattern of firearm injury to trunk and limbs: Two case reports and review.

This article presents two cases of fatal injuries from rifled weapons with unconventional shapes of inlets and exits mismatched with the distance of firing. According to forensic literature, in long-distance ranges, we expected to see rounded entry wounds smaller than bullet size, circular in shape without associates with limited damage in the tissues. In the first case, there were large wounds which did not match a distance of more than 2 m, while in the second case, the distance was more than 30 m with large wounds 21 × 10 cm and massive damage to bones and lungs. In the first case, a 25-yea

An Experimental Cold Gas Cannon for the Study of Porcine Lung Contusion and Behind Armor Blunt Trauma.

Behind armor blunt trauma (BABT) is a non-penetrating injury caused by the rapid deformation of body armor, by a projectile, which may in extreme circumstances cause death. The understanding of the mechanisms is still low, in relation to what is needed for safety threshold levels. Few models of graded kinetic energy transfer to the body exist. We established an experimental model for graded BABT. The cold gas cannon was air-driven, consisted of a pressure vessel, a barrel, and a pressure actuator. It required short training to operate and was constructed by standard components. It produced sta

The finite element method-based pattern recognition approach for the classification of patient-specific gunshot injury.

Violence related injuries and deaths mostly caused by firearms are a major problem throughout the world. Understanding the factors that control the extent of hard-soft tissue wound patterns using computer imaging techniques, numerical methods, and machine learning algorithms may help physicians to diagnose and treat those injuries more properly. Here, we investigate the use of computational results coupled with the pattern recognition algorithms to develop an approach for forensic applications. Initially, computer tomography (CT) images of the patient whose leg was shot by a 9 × 19 parabellum

Nothing but hot air?-On the molecular ballistic analysis of backspatter generated by and the hazard potential of blank guns.

Blank cartridge guns are prevalent especially in countries with laws restricting access to conventional firearms, and it is a common misconception that these weapons are harmless and only used as toys or for intimidation. However, although their harming potential is well-documented by numerous reports of accidents, suicides, and homicides, a systematic molecular biological investigation of traces generated by shots from blank cartridges at biological targets has not been done so far. Herein, we investigate the occurrence and analyzability of backspatter generated by shots of different types of

Pig Organ Energy Loss Comparison Experiments Using BBs.

Torso models for ballistics research require that the mechanical properties of simulant materials must match the heterogeneous nature of tissues/organs within the human thorax/abdomen. A series of energy loss experiments were conducted on fresh porcine organs/tissues at room temperature and 37°C, using steel 4.5 mm BBs fired from a Daisy(®) brand air rifle. They were compared to FBI and NATO specification ordnance gelatin and a candidate surrogate material called Simulant "A". Two CED M2 chronographs measured BB velocity. The resulting energy loss was established using KE = 1/2 mv² before and

Gunshot residue testing in suicides: Part II: Analysis by inductive coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry.

Several different methods can be employed to test for gunshot residue (GSR) on a decedent's hands, including scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM/EDX) and inductive coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). In part I of this 2-part series, GSR results performed by SEM/EDX in undisputed cases of suicidal handgun wounds were studied. In part II, the same population was studied, deceased persons with undisputed suicidal handgun wounds, but GSR testing was performed using ICP-AES. A total of 102 cases were studied and analyzed for caliber of weapon, proximity

[Gunshot wounds--ballistics, physiopathology, surgical treatment].

The form and size of gunshot wounds depend on the projectile type (bird shot, deforming projectiles, non-deforming projectiles), its velocity at impact (high or low velocity projectiles) and the type of tissue affected by the projectile (soft tissues, bones). Gunshot wounds are always contaminated. While low velocity projectiles usually cause minimal wounds, high velocity projectiles can cause large, devastating wounds. All projectiles fired from firearms have a high velocity on impact and may cause death by traumatic shock instantaneously. Ballistics, pathophysiology and clinical findings of

Deadly injuries through recoilless anti-tank weapons while military shooting practice-two case studies from Germany and Switzerland.

In this casuistry, two accidents from Germany and Switzerland are presented that happened during the shot of recoilless anti-tank weapons. In both cases, the injuries led to the death of two soldiers: A 22-year-old soldier in Germany was struck by the counter mass of a so-called Davis gun which had been fired by a comrade during a firing exercise; he died from his severe injuries, especially in the abdominal part of the body. As a peculiarity of the wound morphology, it was found to be a thick-layered, metallic, gray material in the wound cavity, which corresponded to the material of the count

Experimental effect of shots caused by projectiles fired from air guns with kinetic energy below 17 J.

Pursuant to the Polish Weapons and Ammunitions Law (Legal Gazette No 53/1999 item 549 with subsequent amendments), air guns with kinetic energy of the fired projectiles below 17 J are not regarded as weapons. The aim of the study was to assess the potential effect of shots caused by projectiles of various mass and structure fired from air guns with kinetic energy below 17 J on human soft tissues. As a model of soft tissue, we used 20% gelatin blocks. After shooting, we measured the depth of gelatin block penetration by pellets fired from various distances and compared these results with autops

Handmade Firearm and Ammunition Death: A Case Study.

We present a case of a 47-year-old man found in the isolated boiler room of his house, lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Next to the body, a handmade firearm was discovered. The weapon consists of 2 metal plumbing pipes of different circumferences and a percussion detonator at the base. The shotgun shell is made of plastic, and the cartridge contains 4 handmade metal pellets, each 10 mm in diameter. Upon external examination of the body, a gunshot wound was identified in the middle of the chest, fired through the deceased's clothing, which is a rather unusual characteristic when it comes

A historical perspective on ballistic evolution and its implications for maxillofacial surgery.

Ballistics has undergone significant evolution, shaping its role in both military and civilian contexts. This article explores the trajectory of ballistic advancements and their profound implications for maxillofacial surgery. From the early days of firearms in tenth-century China to the modern understanding of terminal ballistics, the study highlights how advancements in projectile technology have transformed injury mechanisms. Ballistic injuries, particularly in the head and neck regions, pose unique challenges, due to their complexity, often involving high-energy transfer and extensive tiss

Children's toys no longer: a porcine model study of the lethality of modern air rifles.

AIMS: We observed modern spring-loaded air rifles reaching velocities similar to small-bore rifles, raising concerns about their potential lethality. After encountering two life-threatening thoracic injuries in our practice, we conducted a study to assess the injuries that a commonly available air rifle could cause in a porcine cadaver model. METHODS: We conducted shooting experiments from 5 and 10 metres away using a .22 calibre spring-loaded airgun, firing five shots into the anterolateral chest on the left side at both distances. Additionally, we repeated the experiment with ten shots into

A contribution to the discussion on the safety of air weapons.

Firearms legislation in the UK stems from the Firearms Act 1968 with its definition of a firearm as a lethal barrelled weapon of any description. The Act allows certain exceptions to be held without licence, most notably air weapons although these are limited by The Firearms (Dangerous Air Weapons) Rules 1969 and related regulations to below 12ft lb (16.3J) for air rifles and below 6ft lb (8.1J) for air pistols. Despite this there are occasional fatalities, typically 1 or 2 each year in the UK, from legally owned air weapons. In the USA there are over 20,000 visits each year to emergency depar

Fatal laryngeal oedema in an adult from an air rifle injury, and related ballistics.

Air guns (air pistols and rifles) are already recognized as being potentially lethal. The diabolo pellet has a calibre of .177 (4.5 mm), a 1250 fps velocity, is high energetic, and is most commonly used in such weapons. In the presented case, the victim sustained an air rifle injury to the neck. The pellet passed through the thyroid cartilage, subsequently causing the extensive laryngeal swelling with haematoma around the pellet channel which fatally obstructed the airway. It is estimated microscopically that at least a number of hours must have passed from the injury to the time of death. For

Upon a failure to equal entry and exit wounds: a possible case of tandem bullets in view of the literature.

Forensic medicine specialists take account of the projectiles remaining in the body when determining whether there are an equal number of entry and exit wounds. The absence of projectiles should suggest blank cartridges, a single exit wound despite several firings and bullet embolization, whereas the presence of more projectiles than expected may indicate tandem projectiles and multiple projectiles entering through the same hole. Radiological examination of the whole body, follow-up of the bullet trajectories, examination of the clothes, and examination of the gun and projectiles play a key ro

Preliminary investigation into the use of Micro-CT scanning on impact damage to fabric, tissue and bone caused by both round and flat nosed bullets.

Firearm offences in the UK, though not as high as in the USA, are increasing year upon year within both countries (Office for National Statistics, 2018 & Mervosh, 2018). This preliminary study looked into using Micro-CT scanning as a method to visualise impact damage and spray patterns caused by 12 test firings of both round and flat nosed bullets to porcine bone (shoulder and leg) suspended in ballistic gelatine and left with no covering, covered with a skin substitute, or covered with fabric (cotton or denim). Micro-CT scanning alongside VG Studio Max showed that overall, in the case of the

Using post-mortem computed tomography to identify traumatic cranial lesions in small stranded odontocetes euthanised via ballistics.

AIMS: To describe the pathophysiology caused by ballistics applied to the head of stranded cetaceans that required euthanasia and use this information to infer the likely welfare implications of these real-life euthanasia events. METHODS: Post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) imaging was conducted on six cetacean carcasses of five different species that were submitted for dissection following ballistics euthanasia. No animals were euthanised for the purpose of this study. All data were collected opportunistically at stranding events where euthanasia was a priori deemed necessary by the Depar

X-ray analytic microscopy with CT-guided sample extraction to analyze potential projectile fragments in a dead serow.

In forensic pathology, it is important to detect and recover as evidence residual metal particles and projectiles when evaluating potential gunshot wounds. This process can be challenging when the bullets are fragmented. This report presents our experience using multiple modalities to analyze the wound of an illegally killed Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) found in a mountainous region without its head and hind limbs. We performed postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) and necropsy that showed a distant-range gunshot wound of the neck likely created by a centerfire rifle. A postmortem cut

Preliminary Investigation of Skull Fracture Patterns Using an Impactor Representative of Helmet Back-Face Deformation.

Military combat helmets protect the wearer from a variety of battlefield threats, including projectiles. Helmet back-face deformation (BFD) is the result of the helmet defeating a projectile and deforming inward. Back-face deformation can result in localized blunt impacts to the head. A method was developed to investigate skull injury due to BFD behind-armor blunt trauma. A representative impactor was designed from the BFD profiles of modern combat helmets subjected to ballistic impacts. Three post-mortem human subject head specimens were each impacted using the representative impactor at thre

The effect of range and ammunition type on fracture patterns in porcine postcranial flat bones.

Pig half-carcasses were shot in scapulae, ribs and mandibles with either 0.243 hunting rifle using high velocity expanding ammunition (N = 30) or AK47 using full metal jacketed (FMJ) ammunition (N = 12) from a range of either 5 or 20 m. Fracture patterns related to distance of fire and ammunition type were compared on de-fleshed, macerated, and reconstructed bones. For expanding ammunition, location of fracture on ribs affected the resulting pattern. Scapulae shot from 5 m presented a comminuted pattern different from those shot from 20 m. Mandibles shot from 20 m showed a characteristic radia
