Cutaneous myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax in a drug user.

Myiasis is the condition resulting from the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by dipterous larvae. The blowflies (Calliphoridae) of Argentina comprise several species that may cause myiasis by colonizing wounds or infected body orifices, and one specific parasite: Cochliomyia hominivorax. This species often causes traumatic myiasis in cattle, dogs and cats, and it is not rare in humans. The larvae consume living tissues, so they are dangerous unless speedily removed. Immediate operative exploration along with the removal of larvae and primary defect closure is recommended in ever

A preliminary investigation of insect colonization and succession on remains of rabbits treated with an organophosphate insecticide in El-Qalyubiya Governorate of Egypt.

A preliminary field study in the summer in a rural village in El-Qalyubiya Governorate (Egypt) compared the necrophagous insects colonizing the cadavers of two male rabbits (Oryctolagus cunicullus domesticus L.) killed by asphyxia (control), with two poisoned by the organophosphate (OP) pesticide pirimiphos-methyl (test). Decay of control carcasses was rapid since they reached the skeletal stage in only 19 days. Test carcasses did not decay completely, even 40 days post-killing. Insect species colonizing both carcasses types were not different, indicating that despite its odor, the OP were not

Influence of Decomposition Dynamics of Plant-Animal Organic Matter on Distribution Patterns of Calyptrate Flies.

Understanding how decomposing organic matter attracts calyptrate flies is fundamental to both medical entomology and forensic science, yet the differential effects of substrate type and decomposition stage remain poorly characterized in tropical environments. In this study, we established controlled decomposition gradients for fish viscera (animal tissue) and leafy vegetables (plant tissue) at 37 °C and 65% RH, defining six physicochemical stages per substrate based on color, odor, and ammonia emissions. Over 20 days, in Haikou, Hainan, we deployed 30 spatially replicated traps per stage, coll

Characterization of intrapuparial development of Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae), under different temperatures in laboratory conditions.

Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Muscidae), popularly known as "housefly", is a highly synanthropic species, with economic, medical-sanitary, veterinary, and forensic importance. It is able to cause damage to health, transmit pathogenic agents, cause infection in domestic animals, and, in its immature stage, cause secondary myiasis. The scavenging habit of its immature stages makes these flies pioneers in colonizing both human and animal carcasses, from the initial stages of corpse decomposition to the final stages. Intrapuparial development studies of all stages of the biological cy

The effect of intrinsic and extrinsic variables on the decomposition of small cadaveric remains in a temperate maritime climate in West-Europe.

The decomposition process of a body can be influenced by various intrinsic and extrinsic variables. While many intrinsic and extrinsic variables are known to affect decomposition, their specific effects under different climate conditions remain unclear. Gaining a better fundamental understanding of how these variables affect the decomposition rate contributes to better interpreting the taphonomic context, being able to more accurately estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI) in the future, and help prevent over- or underestimation of the PMI. Here we investigated the influence of weight (rangin

The effect of plastic bag containment of the head on the rate and pattern of decomposition.

Plastic bag suffocation has been reported in cases of homicide, suicide, and accidental death, with an increase in numbers of suicide and accidental deaths. Though case reports are abundant, decomposition studies have not been performed. This study utilised 20 Sus scrofa domesticus to quantify the effect of a plastic bag covering the head on the rate and pattern of decomposition. A sample group of ten carcasses had plastic bags placed over the heads, with another ten carcasses acting as a control group, without a head covering. The carcasses were placed in an open field to decompose. Over the

Evaluating the value of entomotoxicology in forensic toxicology casework using the first minipig model.

PURPOSE: A principal objective of forensic entomotoxicology is to apply insect specimens for post-mortem toxicological analysis. Successful identification of drugs in necrophagous insects may depend on pharmacokinetic processes occurring in larvae. We thus applied a model system involving Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) to investigate pharmacokinetics of diazepam in larvae in vitro, followed by a field experiment with Göttingen Minipigs. METHODS: Lucilia sericata larvae were fed one of four diazepam concentrations at constant temperature, sampled regularly, and analys

A preliminary study of insect, bacterial, and fungal communities associated with Sus scrofa carrion in a tropical rainforest.

Carrion decomposition is an important component of the ecosystem and plays a significant ecological role in the food chain. During decomposition, arthropods and microorganisms help to decompose and recycle organic matter and nutrients. Although research has been conducted on microorganisms and arthropods associated with carrion across different biogeoclimatic ecoregions, no study has identified these communities from carrion placed under a tropical rainforest. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the arthropod, bacterial, and fungal communities associated with Sus scrofa Linnaeus. carrion

Morphology of immature stages of blow fly, Lucilia sinensis Aubertin (Diptera: Calliphoridae), a potential species of forensic importance.

Lucilia sinensis Aubertin (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a blow fly species of potential forensic importance since adults are attracted to, and colonize, decomposing vertebrate remains. Blow fly larvae associated with human corpses can be useful evidence in forensic investigations; however, their use is dependent in most cases on proper species identification and availability of developmental data. For identification, morphological information on each life stage is traditionally used. We used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the ultrastructure of eggs, all instars, and puparia, of L.

Post-mortem rodent scavenging mimicking canine bite injuries on human corpse in Italy.

Post-mortem vertebrate scavenging may produce tissue alterations that mimic ante-mortem trauma, representing a potential source of error in forensic interpretation. We report a case of extensive soft tissue loss in the face and the anterior part of the neck of a human corpse, initially attributed to a canine attack. A multidisciplinary approach, including scene investigation, autopsy, and entomological and histological analyses, was applied to determine the origin of the lesions and reconstruct the scene. First-instar larvae of Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were collected and used

The immature stages of the necrophagous fly, Prochyliza nigrimana: comparison with Piophila casei and medicolegal considerations (Diptera: Piophilidae).

Flies of family Piophilidae have been recorded as major pests in the food industry, as agents of human myiasis and typically associated with carcasses in advanced stages of decay, being thus important in forensic entomology. Despite that the cosmopolitan species Piophila casei is the most cited in entomological studies, many other piophilid species develop on both carrion and animal products from the food industry. One of those species is Prochyliza nigrimana, widely distributed throughout the Holarctic and Neotropical regions. In this study, the morphological features of the immature stages o

How promptly do blowflies colonise fresh carcasses? A study comparing indoor with outdoor locations.

We investigated the time taken by blowflies to find and oviposit on fresh carcasses placed outdoors and indoors. Paired dead piglets, one in the open and the other in a nearby room (on the first floor of an occupied, detached, suburban house near Cologne, Germany, with a window opened 9 cm) were exposed simultaneously on nine occasions. The species visiting both locations and the number of egg batches deposited by blowflies between both locations were monitored 2, 8, 24 and 48 h after exposure. In all cases the indoor piglet carcass was exclusively infested by Calliphora vicina; only in one ca

Thermal developmental models of a Chinese population of the blow fly Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy.

Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is widely distributed across the Holarctic, Oriental, and Neotropical realms, and has also been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Numerous case reports confirmed that this species frequently colonizes corpses at death scenes, validating its considerable forensic value. Therefore, investigating the developmental patterns of C. vicina is crucial for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). This study observed developmental duration and larval body length in C. vicina under seven constant temperature conditions (16-34

How to prove neglect in the context of the post-mortem examination.

Understanding the causes, extent, and period of neglect is not only a medical but also a forensic task when it comes to legal investigations. In this study, we evaluated 46 autopsied cases where there was clear evidence of physical neglect during the last period of the deceased's life. The age of the deceased ranged from 21 to 96 years; most of them were female (71.7%). The majority of cases (89.9%) took place in a domestic environment, with partners or relatives providing care. The most frequent post-mortem findings were pressure sores, followed by inflammatory skin changes, and signs of maln

Human wound colonization by Lucilia eximia and Chrysomya rufifacies (Diptera: Calliphoridae): myiasis, perimortem, or postmortem colonization?

The infestation of human or animal tissues by fly larvae has been given distinctive terminology depending on the timing and location of colonization. Wounds and orifices colonized by Diptera in a living human or animal are typically referred to as myiasis. When the colonization occurs after death, it is referred to as postmortem colonization and can be used to estimate the minimum postmortem interval. What happens when the human, as in the case presented here, has a necrotic limb while the human remains alive, at least for a short period of time? The case presented here documents perimortem wo

Molecular approaches to the study of myiasis-causing larvae.

Among arthropod diseases affecting animals, larval infections - myiases - of domestic and wild animals have been considered important since ancient times. Besides the significant economic losses to livestock worldwide, myiasis-causing larvae have attracted the attention of scientists because some parasitise humans and are of interest in forensic entomology. In the past two decades, the biology, epidemiology, immunology, immunodiagnosis and control methods of myiasis-causing larvae have been focused on and more recently the number of molecular studies have also begun to increase. The 'new techn

Postmortem Changes in mRNA Expression and Tissue Morphology in Brain and Femoral Muscle Tissues of Rat.

The postmortem interval (PMI), defined as the time elapsed between death and the discovery or examination of the body, is a crucial parameter in forensic science for estimating the time of death. There are many ways to measure the PMI, such as Henssge's nomogram, which uses rectal temperature measurement; livor mortis; rigor mortis; and forensic entomology. However, these methods are usually affected by various conditions in the surrounding environment. The purpose of the present study was to compare molecular genetics and histological changes in the brain and skeletal muscle tissues of SD rat
