Hemopericardium (HP) is frequently found at autopsy, but it represents a challenge for the forensic pathologist when having to assess its etiopathological relationship in causing death, particularly in those cases where ante-mortem clinical and instrumental data are not available. The diagnosis of pericardial tamponade (PT), in fact, is based on signs, symptoms and instrumental evidence and not only on the presence of HP. Post-mortem imaging techniques are actually considered a useful and non-invasive method able to enhance traditional procedures in demonstrating critical forensic findings; co

For a good performance in Clinical and Forensic Toxicology it is important to be aware of the biological and non-biological signs and symptoms related to xenobiotic exposure. This manuscript highlights and analyzes clinical and forensic imaging related to opioids abuse critically. Particularly, respiratory depression, track marks and hemorrhages, skin "popping", practices of phlebotomy, tissue necrosis and ulceration, dermatitis, tongue hyperpigmentation, "coma blisters", intra-arterial administration, candidiasis, wounds associated with anthrax or clostridium contaminated heroin, desomorphine

OBJECTIVE: To explore, from a forensic medicine perspective, assessment considerations for delivery-related functional limitation in women following traumatic pelvic fracture, and to provide reference for functional impairment appraisal in forensic practice.
METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted in combination with a retrospective case series analysis. Mechanisms by which pelvic fracture may affect delivery-related function were summarized, and five female patients with traumatic pelvic fracture were analyzed with respect to imaging characteristics and functional outcomes.

Genetic testing, although regarded as the gold standard in the identification of human remains of unknown identity, is subject to significant limitations resulting from the degradation of biological material and the absence of comparative reference samples. This paper presents the case of an unidentified male (NN) whose body exhibited extensive mechanical trauma and advanced thermal alterations. The severity of soft‑tissue destruction precluded visual identification, while the lack of reference material rendered DNA analysis impossible. The key diagnostic tool in this case was a comparative as

Facial reconstruction is a way to recover facial morphology by restoring soft tissues based on unidentified skulls using the knowledge of anatomy, anthropology, aesthetics, and computer science. It is applied in forensic science, oral plastic surgery and archeology, and especially plays an important role in the identification of the origin of the unknown corpses in forensic science. Facial reconstruction is the supplementary means of identification when other approaches (such as DNA comparison, imaging matching, dental records comparison, etc.) cannot identify individual identity. Facial soft

This report characterizes 2 liberty ammunition-branded 9 mm+P bullet variants, civil defense and ultra-light, which utilize an identical lightweight, lead-free, monolithic copper hollow-point projectile, differing solely in cartridge case composition. Upon impact, the projectile undergoes predictable fragmentation, producing multiple secondary wound channels, significant temporary cavitation, and limited penetration depth. Entry wounds are generally consistent with those of conventional projectiles; exit wounds are characteristically absent. Radiographic examination may demonstrate a relativel

The identification of human remains relies on the comparison of post-mortem data, collected during the autopsy, with the ante-mortem data gathered from the missing persons' reports. DNA, fingerprints, and dental data are considered primary identifiers and are usually collected during any human identification process. Post-mortem dental data should be collected and analyzed by forensic odontologists, as a dental autopsy must not be confused with a dental examination. The virdentopsy project was inaugurated in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, to allow the correct process of human remains by c

Blunt force trauma evaluation is a challenging topic in forensic investigations, frequently associated with violent assaults, homicides, and accidental falls. Distinguishing between injuries caused by direct blows and those resulting from falls is essential for accurate medico-legal assessments. Commonly applied forensic analytical methods demonstrate limitations, necessitating a more comprehensive assessment approach. In this paper a systematic review using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases has been performed. This systematic review explores forensic methodologies for distinguishing

PURPOSE: Forensic medical examinations are essential for evaluating victims of potential crimes. Radiology, particularly computed tomography (CT), has become a valuable tool in postmortem and clinical forensic contexts. However, when assessing living victims, forensic evaluations often face challenges due to reliance on clinical records, which primarily focus on medical treatment rather than forensic interpretation. Clinical radiology (CR) reports frequently omit forensically relevant findings. In contrast, forensic radiological (FR) reports may provide more relevant insights into such details

Technological progress has enabled new three-dimensional (3D) technologies, creating new opportunities in forensic medicine and other areas of medicine. The use of 3D technologies in forensic work is not only directly beneficial to the forensic expert but can also greatly help legal practitioners understand the expert opinion. Photogrammetry is a process for creating a digital 3D model from photographs. The method does not require special equipment or training. The digital model, created with its help, documents injuries accurately, supports the full 3D reconstruction of crimes, supports foren

Statistical research on fingerprint identification and the testing of automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) performances require large numbers of forensic fingermarks. These fingermarks are rarely available. This study presents a semi-automatic method to create simulated fingermarks in large quantities that model minutiae features or images of forensic fingermarks. This method takes into account several aspects contributing to the variability of forensic fingermarks such as the number of minutiae, the finger region, and the elastic deformation of the skin. To investigate the appli

This paper investigates the effects of applying multiple different sequences of transformations that aim to Gaussianise the distribution of deep-neural-network embeddings (DNN embeddings) before those DNN embeddings are used to calculate likelihood ratios using a model that assumes Gaussian distributions (Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis, PLDA). The transformations were originally developed for non-forensic applications of automatic speaker recognition. This paper investigates the effects of applying the transformations under three different sets of forensically realistic conditions.

Controversies surrounding the value of neuroscience as forensic evidence are explored from the perspective of the philosophy of mind, as well as from a practical analysis of the state of the scientific research literature. At a fundamental philosophical level there are profound differences in how law and neuroscience view the issue of criminal responsibility along the continuum from free will to determinism. At a more practical level, significant limitations in the current state of neuroimaging research constrain its ability to inform legal decision-making. Scientifically supported and unsuppo

Forensic protocols and medico-legal techniques are increasingly being employed in investigations of museological material. The final findings of such investigations may reveal interesting facts on historical figures, customs and habits, as well as provide meaningful data for forensic use. Herein we present a case review where forensic experts were requested to identify taxonomic affinities, stage of preservation and provide skeletal analysis of mummified non-human archaeological remains, and verify whether two mummified hands are human or not. The manuscript offers a short review on the proces

OBJECTIVE: To classify the types of hyperdense areas in the heart cavities on post-mortem CT (PMCT) and compare them according to the presence of blood clots in the heart cavities at forensic autopsy.
METHODS: One hundred and twelve cases with CT images taken before forensic autopsy were evaluated. The presence and shape of hyperdense areas in the right or left heart cavities were retrospectively evaluated on PMCT images and were classified into four types (block-like, cast-like, fluid level-like, and unclear). The presence of blood clots was confirmed when there were clots in the heart cavit

UNLABELLED: When introducing new methods into practice, in order to improve the quality of medical research, in addition to the generally accepted statistical tools, it is necessary to apply additional ones, one of which is the kappa-Cohen (k). The calculation of the k-coefficient makes it possible to assess the level of agreement between a group of experts or methods, as well as to determine the reliability and validity of the study results.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate inter-expert agreement in age estimation within forensic medical practice using a radiological method.

Post mortem computed tomography (PMCT) can be used as a triage tool to better identify cases with a possibly non-natural cause of death, especially when high caseloads make it impossible to perform autopsies on all cases. Substantial data can be generated by modern medical scanners, especially in a forensic setting where the entire body is documented at high resolution. A solution for the resulting issues could be the use of deep learning techniques for automatic analysis of radiological images. In this article, we wanted to test the feasibility of such methods for forensic imaging by hypothes

An investigator who is involved in assessing the likelihood of physical abuse must make a decision as to whether the injury seen matches the explanation given. In some instances the pattern of these injuries can give the investigator a possible link to the cause of the injury. Photographic imaging is used to record the patterned cutaneous injuries (PCI) and to facilitate forensic interpretation. The current method of capturing PCI often results in some form of distortion that causes a change to the shape of the patterned injury. The Dermatological Patterned Injury Capture and Analysis (DePICA)
