Forensic psychiatry as a subspecialty variously differs from general psychiatry. Therefore psychiatrists working in forensic psychiatry are confronted with ethical problems of other kind. In the following several ethical problems connecting with forensic psychiatric examination are pointed out. Finally the question is discussed, whether there is a need of special ethical guidelines for forensic psychiatry.

Burnout and well being in forensic psychiatrists have been insufficiently examined, with most research focusing on vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, or posttraumatic stress disorder among forensic mental health professionals. Previous research in Canada from 2023 highlighted a high prevalence of burnout among forensic psychiatrists, particularly among early-career psychiatrists, those whose values were misaligned with their institution, and those who had a low perceived control over their workload. Building upon this, the current study provides an assessment of the U.S. workforce in forens

BACKGROUND: Gender differences in psychiatric symptoms and pharmacological treatment are well-documented in general psychiatry but remain understudied in forensic psychiatric populations. This study aimed to explore gender-based differences in sociodemographic, clinical, criminal, biochemical, and pharmacological characteristics among forensic inpatients with serious mental illness (SMI).
METHODS: A total of 100 patients (59 men, 41 women) with SMI who were admitted to the forensic psychiatry department by court order were included in a two-time-point observational cohort study with assessmen

BACKGROUND: Some suspected criminal offenders in South Africa are required to undergo forensic psychiatry assessments before or during the trial, which can be delayed as a result of the shortage of psychiatrists and inpatient forensic psychiatry beds. In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province, only one hospital (Fort Napier Hospital [FNH]) is designated for the 30-day inpatient forensic psychiatry assessments and there is a long waiting list for suspected criminal offenders awaiting assessment. There is a need to find ways of alleviating the backlog in the waiting list, with the use of outpatient forens

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology issues certificates for psychiatrists in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and added qualification in geriatric psychiatry. It will issue a certificate in added qualification in clinical neurophysiology in 1992. An application for a certificate in added qualification in addiction psychiatry is currently under review by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The American Psychiatric Association has requested that the ABPN consider forensic psychiatry for an added qualification. All new subspecialty certificates will have a te

The practice of psychiatry and psychology in prisons is essential because of the high prevalence of mental disorders that is observed. Psychiatrists and psychologists, such as other health care professionals, should be affiliated to the health department and intervene in the therapeutic role, which must be distinguished from the role of the psychiatric expert mandated by the court. Therapy in prison is challenging because of the sometimes contradictory issues, at the interface of clinical, societal, security, legal and political fields. Health care professionals can thus be subject to importan

The simulation of mental illness, so-called "Malingering", is a very difficult phenomenon for professionals to identify when making an assessment, especially in the medicolegal and forensic psychology and psychiatry fields. When malingering, the subject implements strategies that mimic the symptoms related to a possible psychiatric disease, with the aim of misleading the operator. It is necessary, therefore, to elicit a complete medical history and make a close clinical examination and, especially, to be able to rely on appropriate diagnostic tools. Another important aspect, in the legal medic

ObjectiveMoral distress occurs when we know what the right thing to do is in accordance with our ethical principles and values, but institutional or other constraints make this difficult1. As psychiatrists and psychiatry trainees, we are asked to assume responsibilities and balance competing obligations to our patients, organisations, and the public. I offer a first-person narrative of the moral distress experienced by a prison psychiatrist. I hope it resonates with other psychiatrists and psychiatry trainees dedicated to addressing the moral challenges in mental health and inspires those to h

Several cases of COVID-19-related mental disorders have emerged during the pandemic. In a case of femicide that occurred in Italy during the first phase of the pandemic, coinciding with a national lockdown, a discrepancy arose among forensic psychiatry experts, particularly toward the diagnosis of Brief Psychotic Disorder (BPD) related to COVID-19. We aimed to discuss the evaluation of the case through an integration of information and a literature review on comparable reported cases. An analysis of the diagnosis of brief acute psychosis was then performed, as well as a mini-review on cases of

INTRODUCTION: Over the past 40 years, a marked deinstitutionalisation in favour of social and community psychiatry has taken place in many countries. During this same period of time, there has been an increase in the number of mentally ill criminals. The purpose of this study is to analyse the correlations between the reorganization of the psychiatric treatment system, the growing number of forensic patients and the increase in serious crime, homicide, arson and violence associated with the mentally ill.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using registers and other data sources, we estimated the annual po

This study aims to identify the factors that need to be considered in the implementation of the integrated psychological treatment (IPT), a cognitive-behavioral group approach for individuals with schizophrenia, in correctional and forensic psychiatric settings. To meet this objective, a multiple case study (n = 2) was conducted. Stakeholders involved in the implementation were interviewed. Findings showed that IPT is relevant and can be delivered in correctional and forensic psychiatric settings. However, several issues impeded its implementation and sustainability, some of which were more sp

"Therapy" is a currency with two different notations, as far as court practice is concerned. If the offences are of a minor nature, such as exhibitionism, the judge will usually expect the expert to mention the word, which prompts him to refer the delinquent to a therapist without delay, even if he is not at all hopeful that therapy may be successful. "Therapy" is an inflationary currency. In severe cases, its notation is correspondingly lower. This development has been promoted by the increasing division between forensic and therapeutic perspectives in psychiatry. The difficulties resulting t

Some key issues pertaining to Palestinian psychiatry are described. Bearing in mind the geographical location and history of the Palestinian population, the development of psychiatry needs to be seen in the context of the Arab world, on the one hand, and of Israel, on the other. In the Middle Ages, Arab culture and medicine were more developed than in Europe. Aspects of general and forensic psychiatry on the West Bank and Gaza are outlined. Issues pertaining to the death penalty, suicide and suicide bombers are also discussed. The biblically-described relationship between the Arab and Jewish p

OBJECTIVE: To examine statistical properties and the validity of a ward climate questionnaire for forensic psychiatric institutions. The 15 item instrument comprises three climate dimensions: Patients' Cohesion and Social Support, Safety (vs. threat by aggression and violence) and Therapeutic Hold.
METHOD: On 46 wards in 17 forensic hospitals in Germany, patients and staff filled in the climate questionnaire and further scales, among them the "Ward Atmosphere Scale" and a "Good Milieu Index". Problem events (e. g. wilful damage of property, drug relapse) were listed on each ward over a period

The notion of 'psychic trauma" is defined. Medical criteria and characteristic clinical manifestations are discussed that may be used for expert estimation of the degree of health hazard in the form of psychogenic psychic disorder. It is shown that they are applicable to the evaluation of the consequences of a psychic trauma as exemplified by the results of forensic psychiatric expert examination of sexual offence victims carried out at V.P. Serbsky Research Centre of Social and Forensic Psychiatry by clinical and psychopathological methods.

INTRODUCTION: Malingering can be divided into simulation and exaggeration of symptoms. Malingering has traditionally been considered rare in general psychiatry. In contrast to earlier estimates, more recent studies report that doctors suspect malingering frequently in psychiatric emergency departments. The aim of this study is to survey how often doctors in psychiatric emergency units in a public, free-of-charge, mental health service suspect that patients are malingering, and which diagnoses, symptom complaints and suspected reasons for malingering doctors ascribe to their patients.
METHODS:

This paper discusses the assessment of psychopatic traits in perpetrators with schizofrenia in the light of common assumption that perpetrators with schizofrenia are not homogenic group but rather heterogenic group whose future risk does not rest exclusively on the psychopathology of the underlying disease. Our sample consists of 150 perperators with schizofrenia who commited a criminal act and were subjects of forensic evaluation in the University Hospital of Psychiatry Vrapče, Center for Forensic Psychiatry throughout a period of 11 years. All data were extracted from written evaluations. In
