Ice storms are a type of extreme winter weather event common to north temperate and boreal forests worldwide. Recent climate modelling studies suggest that these storms may become more frequent and severe under a changing climate. Compared to other types of storm events, relatively little is known about the direct and indirect impacts of these storms on forests, as naturally occurring ice storms are inherently difficult to study. Here we describe a novel experimental approach used to create a suite of ice storms in a mature hardwood forest in New Hampshire, USA. The experiment included five ic

The central Congo Basin peatlands span 167 600 km2 and are the world's largest tropical peatlands. Hundreds of thousands of people live in the vicinity of the peatlands, but studies of how people use the peatlands do not, to our knowledge, exist. This article investigates people's use of peat swamp forests in three study sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of the Congo. Using participatory methods, we interviewed 407 people and learned that 100% of households use the peat swamp forest for fishing. Therefore, the peatlands are essential to people's well-being and health a

BACKGROUND: Functional traits are pivotal indicators of plant ecological strategies, regulating resource acquisition and allocation through traits trade-offs. However, few studies have explored how trait coordination underlying resource-use strategies vary across plant life-forms from different trait dimensionalities. In this study, we examined 14 leaf functional traits in 81 plant species (27 herbaceous and 54 woody species) from the southwestern Qinling Mountains, including 6 structural traits (leaf area, leaf thickness, leaf mass per area, leaf dry matter content, leaf tissue density, and l

Human-modified tropical landscapes are mosaics of farmland, young regrowing forests, and old-growth forests. These fragmented landscapes are hotter and drier than forested landscapes and, combined with climate change, may lead to shifts in forest community composition. We asked how macroclimate and surrounding landscape shape community-level drought strategies of young regrowing secondary forests. We assessed community composition of 37 young secondary dry and wet forests in Ghana during the first 3 years of succession, collected drought-related leaf and stem traits of their pioneer species, a

Plant communities are unevenly distributed in space, shaped by both abiotic and biotic factors. Several methods have been developed for delineating their extent, including the spatial analysis of vegetation patterns using tools such as vegetation maps, climate-based simulations, and the use of characteristic species distribution. However, limited knowledge exists about which species are most suitable for this purpose. In this study, we aimed to delimit the seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) in Mexico based on the distribution area of vascular plant species endemic to Mexico and registered t

Northern forests are currently taking up large quantities of carbon due to tree growth. Yet, it is not known how the stocks of soil nutrients have responded to this increase in biomass. Therefore, we analyzed thousands of forest soils in Sweden over the last four decades. We found strong increases in the concentrations and stocks of plant-available magnesium, calcium, and manganese in the organic layer of the soils. Specifically, the concentrations of plant-available magnesium, calcium, and manganese in the organic layer increased by 38%, 21%, and 100%, respectively, over the four decades. The

BACKGROUND: The wild pig (Sus scrofa) is an exotic species that has been present in the southeastern United States for centuries yet continues to expand into new areas dominated by bottomland and upland forests, the latter of which are less commonly associated with wild pigs. Here, we aimed to investigate wild pig movement and space use attributes typically used to guide wild pig management among multiple spatiotemporal scales. Our investigation focused on a newly invaded landscape dominated by bottomland and upland forests.
METHODS: We examined (1) core and total space use using an autocorre

BACKGROUND: Embankment dams were built south of the Laizhou bay in China for controlling storm surge disasters, but they are not enough to replace coastal forests in protecting the land. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of embankment dams on natural forests dominated by Tamarix austromongolica and test whether the dam-shrub system is a preferable updated defense.
METHODS: Coastal forests on two typical flats, one before and one behind embankment dams, were investigated using quadrats and lines. Land bareness, vegetation composition and species co-occurrence were assessed; struc

Numerous evaluation studies have been conducted on a variety of road safety measures. However, the issue of treatment heterogeneity, defined as the variation in treatment effects, has rarely been investigated before. This paper contributes to the literature by introducing generalized random forests (GRF) for estimation of heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs) in road safety analysis. GRF has high functional flexibility and is able to search for complex treatment heterogeneity. We first perform a series of simulation experiments to compare GRF with three causal methods that have been used in r

An increasing number of studies have investigated the consequences of biodiversity loss for the occurrence of vector-borne diseases such as Lyme borreliosis, the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. As host species differ in their ability to transmit the Lyme borreliosis bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. to ticks, increased host diversity can decrease disease prevalence by increasing the proportion of dilution hosts, host species that transmit pathogens less efficiently. Previous research shows that Lyme borreliosis risk differs between forest types and suggests that a h

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a contagious, severe and often lethal form of hemorrhagic fever in humans. The association of EVD outbreaks with forest clearance has been suggested previously but many aspects remained uncharacterized. We used remote sensing techniques to investigate the association between deforestation in time and space, with EVD outbreaks in Central and West Africa. Favorability modeling, centered on 27 EVD outbreak sites and 280 comparable control sites, revealed that outbreaks located along the limits of the rainforest biome were significantly associated with forest losses wi

Group analysis of neuroimaging data is a vital tool for identifying anatomical and functional variations related to diseases as well as normal biological processes. The analyses are often performed on a large number of highly correlated measurements using a relatively smaller number of samples. Despite the correlation structure, the most widely used approach is to analyze the data using univariate methods followed by post-hoc corrections that try to account for the data's multivariate nature. Although widely used, this approach may fail to recover from the adverse effects of the initial analys

Accurate automated segmentation of brain tumors in MR images is challenging due to overlapping tissue intensity distributions and amorphous tumor shape. However, a clinically viable solution providing precise quantification of tumor and edema volume would enable better pre-operative planning, treatment monitoring and drug development. Our contributions are threefold. First, we design efficient gradient and LBPTOP based texture features which improve classification accuracy over standard intensity features. Second, we extend our texture and intensity features to symmetric texture and symmetric

We analyzed wildfire exposure for key social and ecological features on the national forests in Oregon and Washington. The forests contain numerous urban interfaces, old growth forests, recreational sites, and habitat for rare and endangered species. Many of these resources are threatened by wildfire, especially in the east Cascade Mountains fire-prone forests. The study illustrates the application of wildfire simulation for risk assessment where the major threat is from large and rare naturally ignited fires, versus many previous studies that have focused on risk driven by frequent and small

Forests are widely recognized for their significant role in climate change mitigation. Global landscape-scale assessments have focused mainly on how forest cover (FC) affects temperature. Yet, changes in forest area are generally accompanied by altered fragmentation, and both the independent effect of fragmentation on forest thermal environments and its contribution relative to FC remain insufficiently understood. We disentangled the respective relationships of fragmentation and FC with land surface temperature (LST) across the globe. Except in boreal zones with a mean annual air temperature b

Forest cover has undergone significant changes accelerating over recent decades. Acari vectors such as ticks and chigger mites are intricately linked to forest ecosystems because of the suitable hosts and microclimates provided. However, the implications of forest cover change on Acari vectors and their pathogens remain poorly understood. This study investigates the impacts of forest cover dynamics on Acari-borne diseases risk worldwide through a comprehensive review of the literature. We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA Method to retrieve citations related to forest cover dynam

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the most neurotoxic and bioaccumulative form of mercury (Hg) present in the terrestrial and aquatic food sources of boreal ecosystems, posing potential risks to wildlife and human health. Harvesting impacts on Hg methylation and MeHg concentrations in forest soils and stream sediment are not fully understood. In this study, a field investigation was carried out in 4 harvested and 2 unharvested boreal forest watersheds, before and after harvest, to better understand impacts on Hg methylation and MeHg concentration in soils and stream sediment, including their responses t

Habitat loss and fragmentation drive the worldwide depletion of biodiversity. Although it is known that anthropogenic disturbances severely affect host and ecosystem integrity, effects on parasites are largely understudied. This study aims to investigate if and how habitat fragmentation affects the composition of ectoparasite communities on small mammalian hosts in two networks of dry deciduous forest fragments in northwestern Madagascar. Forest sites differing in size, proportion of edge habitat and host density were studied in the Ankarafantsika National Park and in the Mariarano region. A t
