PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life-altering acquired disability. Understanding factors that contribute to adaption to disability and decreased SCI-related stress are critical to personal wellbeing and quality of life for SCI patients. Previous research suggests that forgiveness of others, self-forgiveness, and overall forgiveness are associated with psychological well-being in patients with other chronic illnesses. As such, dimensions of forgiveness may be relevant factors in restoring wellness in SCI patients. This study sought to examine a comprehensive model of the impact

OBJECTIVE: We examined the extent to which self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others moderated the association of hostility with changes in cognitive impairment over 10 years in a nationally representative sample of adults in the United States.
METHOD: Participants were 1,084 respondents to the Americans' Changing Lives survey, a longitudinal study of American adults. Hostility, self-forgiveness, forgiveness of others, and cognitive impairment were measured at baseline, and cognitive impairment was assessed again at follow-up. Moderated multiple regression analyses tested whether self-forgiv

Based on 11 months of ethnographic fieldwork at a residential treatment center in the United States, this article explores the varied meanings that female youth attribute to behavior and the strategic (mis)use of knowledge about psychiatric diagnosis and medication at a time when the scope of behaviors pathologized in young people continues to expand. Drawing upon psychological and critically applied medical anthropology, as well as contributions from philosophy on how classifications of people come into being and circulate, attention is paid to the multiple contradictions at work in diagnosin

Recent research has identified that shame can contribute to depressive symptomology. Considering the harmful effects of clinical and subclinical depression on emotional well-being and long-term health, it is critical to consider protective factors. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between shame-proneness and depression, exploring the moderating roles of forgiveness and blaming others. In a sample of 1,275 adults (ages 18-77, 58.5% female), this cross-sectional study used self-report measures including the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), the Test of Sel

The explosion of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical practice has shaken the foundations of clinical assessment and management. In our study, we conducted structured interviews with 43 patients (23 female, 15 male) affected by MMD (DSM-5-TR criteria). We sent the recorded and transcribed semi-structured interviews to the analysis of appropriately trained AI programs. We evaluated the predictive weight of symptoms described by patients beyond those present among the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria. We also analyzed the relationship with forgiveness, hopelessness, and diminished driv

Previous research shows that self-control predicts forgiveness, but few studies have investigated the internal mechanism of this link. The current study explored the effects of rumination and anger on the relationship between self-control and forgiveness. A total of 580 college students recruited from three universities in Wuhan completed the self-control, rumination, anger, and trait forgiveness scales. Results showed that self-control was positively correlated with forgiveness (r = 0.34, p < 0.001). Rumination (β = 0.08, p < 0.05) and anger (β = 0.13, p < 0.05) mediate the relationship betwe

The purpose of this article is to begin applying the principles of the psychology of forgiveness to people who are without homes and people who are in prisons. A review of the literature shows trauma for both groups. When the trauma is caused by unjust treatment by others, then excessive anger can result, compromising one's psychological and physical health. We review the interventions that have been offered for those without homes and the imprisoned to examine which existing programmes address such anger. Forgiveness Therapy, although untried in these two settings, may be one beneficial appro

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs) face myriad challenges related to experiencing negative life events resulting from their parents' problematic drinking. ACOAs are at an elevated risk of developing alcohol-related problems and psychological distress, which may influence their overall well-being. The current, cross-sectional study examined the association of forgiveness with both ACOA-related problems and alcohol-related problems among college students raised by parents with a history of problematic drinking (N = 348), as mediated by psychological distress (i.e., depression, anxiety, and str

In the modern ART era, long-term treatment success should be understood as a combination of HIVRNA suppression and a person-centered approach, based on individual therapeutic history, GRT, past toxicities, and comorbidities. The pharmacological determinants of long-term virological suppression are potency, high-genetic barrier, and high-forgiveness regimen. Interplays and relative weights of these three factors can vary according to the different stages of treatment.

Objective: Infidelity causes mental health problems, family disruptions, rumination about events and changes in women's beliefs about the disloyal person. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of mindfulness-based schema (MBS) therapy and forgiveness therapy in emotional responses, cognitive distortions and self-compassion of women affected by infidelity. Method: It was an experimental research with a pretest-posttest and follow-up design. Eighty-one women affected by infidelity were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group. The experimental groups received in

BACKGROUND: Although interpersonal forgiveness is well studied, there is little research on self-forgiveness. The available research on self-forgiveness is mostly based on interpersonal forgiveness. This study attempts to understand the nature, attributes and dynamics of self-forgiveness. METHODS: The data were collected from 25 adults (aged 18–25 years) enrolled in higher education through a semistructured interview and were thematically analysed. RESULTS: The analysis resulted in six themes illustrating how participants understood self-forgiveness. Theme 1 emphasizes early offense realizatio

It is well-established that superior cognitive control abilities are associated with lower levels of anger and aggression. However, the precise emotion regulation operations underlying this relationship have been underspecified and underexplored in previous research. Drawing on neuropsychological models of cognitive control, the authors propose that limited capacity resources can be recruited within a hostile situation to promote a process of forgiveness. The results of 2 studies supported this proposal. Across studies, individual differences in hostility-primed cognitive control were assessed

BACKGROUND: While forgiveness is linked to emotional and physical benefits at the end of life, little is known about how it is understood or addressed by palliative care professionals. Spiritual caregivers, especially in the Netherlands where formal training is growing, may be well-placed to support such conversations, yet their experiences remain underexplored.
AIM: To explore how Dutch spiritual caregivers perceive and engage with forgiveness at the end of life, including their potential role in facilitating it.
DESIGN: This qualitative study used interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death due to an infectious agent. Adherence to long and complex TB treatments is supported by methods including directly observed therapy. The negative impact of missed drug doses on clinical outcomes is well established, highlighting both the importance of adherence support and methods to quantify the ability of a regimen to continue exerting a biologic effect during gaps in dosing known as treatment "forgiveness." To explore the value of the BALB/c relapsing mouse model of TB in evaluating treatment forgiveness, we assessed the impact of weekend d

Mindfulness and forgiveness can contribute to decreased rumination, which in turn has been found to play an important role in sleep problems, such as insomnia and poor sleep quality. The authors explored rumination as a potential explanatory variable underlying the association of mindfulness with insomnia and sleep quality, with a model encompassing different mindfulness facets and controlling for interpersonal dispositional forgiveness. One hundred adults (74% females, Mage = 27.62, SD = 8.11) completed measures of Mindfulness, Forgivingness, Rumination, Sleep Quality, and Insomnia. Nonjudgin

Although obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the conduct disorders (CD) express a contrasting symptomatology, they could represent different answers to a common matrix about morality. In the literature, some theoretical models describe people with OCD as individuals who experience high levels of responsibility and guilt. On the other hand, adolescents with a CD are described as if they do not feel guilty at all or consider anti-social purposes as more important than existing moral purposes. The aims of this study were to investigate the role of forgiveness in responsibility and guilt level

This study examined the relations among women's experiences of abuse, forgiveness, revenge, psychological health, and physiological stress reactivity. Both dispositional (Study 1; N = 103) and state (Study 2; N = 258) forgiveness and vengeance were associated with psychological symptoms. However, the relation between revenge and greater depression was magnified among psychologically abused women, whereas-unexpectedly-the positive link between forgiveness and psychological health was strengthened among physically abused women. Moreover, while revenge coincided with increased cortisol reactivity

Gambling's impact on a couple's relationship is an essential element in the gambling disorder (GD). Gamblers tend to lie to their partner to conceal the extent of their gambling problems and debts, which can lead to a serious relational transgression for the couple. One promising avenue is a couple treatment focusing on forgiveness processes. The objective of this study was to determine whether the Integrative Couple Treatment for Pathological Gamblers (ICT-PG) with an emphasis on forgiveness processes helped couples to enhance these processes. A Single-Case Research Design (SCRD) was used wit
