Object perception and motion in infants.

Male and female infants 10 weeks of age (N = 24) were presented with two distinctively patterned objects in either moving or stationary form. Measures of visual regard indicated the infants were able to discriminate between the objects whether the objects were stationary or in motion. The results are contrasted to T. G. R. Bower's assessment of infants' utilization of features in perceiving moving objects. The results are also compared to those of an earlier study which employed an operant rather than a preference technique to investigate this same problem.

Arterial pulse modulates steady-state ocular accommodation.

Rapid and continuous fluctuations in ocular focus are known to occur when the eye views a stationary target. The advent of high-speed infra-red optometers has established that these microfluctuations of ocular accommodation have two dominant components: low frequency of less than 0.6 Hz and high frequency between 1.0-2.3Hz. Although the retinal image blur associated with microfluctuations has the potential to guide and maintain optimum accommodation levels, there is no consensus with regard to the respective contribution of each of the dominant frequency components. Using a newly-designed meas

sTetro-Deep Learning Powered Staircase Cleaning and Maintenance Reconfigurable Robot.

Staircase cleaning is a crucial and time-consuming task for maintenance of multistory apartments and commercial buildings. There are many commercially available autonomous cleaning robots in the market for building maintenance, but few of them are designed for staircase cleaning. A key challenge for automating staircase cleaning robots involves the design of Environmental Perception Systems (EPS), which assist the robot in determining and navigating staircases. This system also recognizes obstacles and debris for safe navigation and efficient cleaning while climbing the staircase. This work pr

The stationarity hypothesis: an allocentric criterion in visual perception.

Having long considered that extraretinal information plays little or no role in spatial vision, the study of structure from motion (SfM) has confounded a moving observer perceiving a stationary object with a non-moving observer perceiving a rigid object undergoing equal and opposite motion. However, recently it has been shown that extraretinal information does play an important role in the extraction of structure from motion by enhancing motion cues for objects that are stationary in an allocentric, world-fixed reference frame (Nature 409 (2001) 85). Here, we test whether stationarity per se i

The ground is dominant in infants' perception of relative distance.

When making relative distance judgments, adults attend to information provided by the ground surface and generally ignore information provided by ceiling surfaces. In the present study, we asked whether this ground dominance effect is present in infancy. Groups of 5- and 7-month-old infants viewed a display depicting textured ground and ceiling surfaces. Two toys, which were attached to vertical rods, were affixed to the display. The toys/rods were positioned so that one toy was specified as being nearer by the ground surface but farther away by the ceiling surface, while the other toy was spe

Perception of plane orientation from self-generated and passively observed optic flow.

We investigated the perception of three-dimensional plane orientation--focusing on the perception of tilt--from optic flow generated by the observer's active movement around a simulated stationary object, and compared the performance to that of an immobile observer receiving a replay of the same optic flow. We found that perception of plane orientation is more precise in the active than in the immobile case. In particular, in the case of the immobile observer, the presence of shear in optic flow drastically diminishes the precision of tilt perception, whereas in the active observer, this decre

Ambiguous pictorial depth cues and perceptions of nonrigid motion in the three-loop figure.

The three-loop figure is a two-dimensional (2-D) pattern that generates (mis)perceptions of nonrigid three-dimensional (3-D) structure when rotated about its centre. Such observations have been described as counterexamples to the principle whereby a moving object is presumed to be rigid, provided that a rigid interpretation is possible (ie the 'rigidity constraint'). In the present investigation we demonstrated that stationary three-loop figures exhibit many of the classic properties of multistable/ambiguous figures, with any one of several possible 3-D configurations being reported at any one

Perceptual organization as nested control.

It is argued here that perceptual organization is the structuring of environmental stimuli into nested structures of control. This view is derived from our proposal that the perceptual system forces any stimulus set to have the algebraic structure G of a machine, and that G is given a specific factorization sequence, G = G1 X G2 X ... X Gn, induced by dynamical systems criteria which the organism imposes on the environment. An investigation into these factorization sequences reveals that any such sequence is split into two subsequences, one structuring the way in which the stimulus set can cha

From pixels to perception: A benchmark for human-like symmetry detection.

Symmetry, a fundamental concept in nature, science and art, has challenged computer vision researchers because it occurs in various forms and human symmetry perception can deviate from the mathematical definition. Previous symmetry detection datasets are limited by the number of annotators and by missing the nuances of human perception. We introduce PIX2PER, a novel dataset for reflection symmetry in natural scenes and artworks. We also introduce WF1, a modified version of the widely-used F1 detection performance score, by adding weights to precision and recall to accommodate for the perceived

Neural correlates of 3D versus 2D perception: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Despite hundreds of neuroimaging studies examining the neural correlates of 3D shape perception (as opposed to 2D), there is no consensus because of the diversity of stimuli and depth cues used. We addressed this problem through an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) coordinate-based meta-analysis, pooling together studies that examined the 3D vs 2D shape contrast across multiple depth cues used to render the 3D shapes. A systematic review was performed using Medline, PsychInfo and Embase databases and yielded 25 empirical studies after screening. Articles were split into cue types-disparit

Shape tuning in macaque inferior temporal cortex.

Neurons in the inferior temporal cortex (IT) of the macaque fire more strongly to some shapes than others, but little is known about how to characterize this shape tuning more generally, because most previous studies have used somewhat arbitrary variations in the stimuli with unspecified magnitudes of the changes. The present investigation studied the modulation of IT cells to nonaccidental property (NAP, i.e., invariant to orientations in depth) and metric property (MP, i.e., depth dependent) variations of dimensions of generalized cones (a general formalism for characterizing shapes hypothes

Self-motion and the perception of stationary objects.

One of the ways that we perceive shape is through seeing motion. Visual motion may be actively generated (for example, in locomotion), or passively observed. In the study of the perception of three-dimensional structure from motion, the non-moving, passive observer in an environment of moving rigid objects has been used as a substitute for an active observer moving in an environment of stationary objects; this 'rigidity hypothesis' has played a central role in computational and experimental studies of structure from motion. Here we show that this is not an adequate substitution because active

Frameworks of analysis for the neural representation of animate objects and actions.

A variety of cell types exist in the temporal cortex providing high-level visual descriptions of bodies and their movements. We have investigated the sensitivity of such cells to different viewing conditions to determine the frame(s) of reference utilized in processing. The responses of the majority of cells in the upper bank of the superior temporal sulcus (areas TPO and PGa) found to be sensitive to static and dynamic information about the body were selective for one perspective view (e.g. right profile, reaching right or walking left). These cells can be considered to provide viewer-centred

Function of color in learning an assembly task by learning disabled adolescents.

This study examined the effect of color on responses by 20 14- to 17-yr-old learning disabled students in a probation facility to a puzzle assembly task. Prior to the task, one of two randomly constituted groups of 10 viewed a black and white film illustrating a puzzle assembly, the other group viewed an identical film of the puzzle being assembled in color. Analysis indicated that color does not enhance performance in some cases and may inhibit performance.

Orientation fields predict human perception of 3D shape from shading.

How the brain recovers the three-dimensional structure of surfaces and objects from 2D retinal images remains mysterious. Shading patterns provide one of the most powerful-yet least understood-visual depth cues. Most theories assume the brain infers surface normals from luminance values. However, this seems unlikely as visual neurons are broadly insensitive to luminance. To identify alternative cues, we measured responses of model orientation-selective cell populations to images of shaded objects. We found a surprising statistical relationship between image orientations and surface curvature p

Neuronal correlates of motion-defined shape perception in primate dorsal and ventral streams.

Human and non-human primates can readily perceive the shape of objects using visual motion. Classically, shape, and motion are considered to be separately processed via ventral and dorsal cortical pathways, respectively. However, many lines of anatomical and physiological evidence have indicated that these two pathways are likely to be interconnected at some stage. For motion-defined shape perception, these two pathways should interact with each other because the ventral pathway must utilize motion, which the dorsal pathway processes, to extract shape signal. However, it is unknown how interac

The effect of stimulus blanking on the detection of intrasaccadic displacements of translating objects.

In a display with a stationary and a translating object, subjects made a saccade towards one of the objects and had to detect intrasaccadic changes in the position of either the saccade target or the saccade flanker. Sensitivity for displacements of the stationary and moving objects was measured in conditions with (60 and 220 ms) and without blanking. In the conditions without blanking, displacement detection for translating objects was better than detection for stationary objects, which confirmed previous results (Vis. Res. 42 (2002) 379). This pattern was reversed in the blanking conditions:

Word specific impairments in naming and spelling but not reading.

A patient, who had suffered a left-hemisphere CVA, is described. He had a major aphasic syndrome which encompassed both his propositional speech and literacy skills. However, his comprehension of both spoken and written language was intact. His superior ability to retrieve nouns as opposed to other word classes was systematically investigated. This superiority of noun processing was restricted to concrete nouns. It was found that he had a significant deficit in the naming of action pictures as compared with object pictures, and a significant deficit in the written spelling of verbs as compared

Egocenter location in children with strabismus: in the median plane and unchanged by surgery.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that there are spatial localization shifts after horizontal strabismus surgery when a patient performs an open-loop pointing task. After monocular enucleation, an adult will also show a shift in the pointing response. Other studies have shown that in children who underwent enucleation, the egocenter location shifts toward the remaining eye. Is the pointing shift after surgery in children with strabismus the result of a shift in egocenter location? METHODS: Using a modified Roelofs' method for measuring the egocenter, eight children were tested before and a
