BACKGROUND: Carnivorous insects have evolved a range of prey and host capture mechanisms. However, insect predation strategies in the fossil record remain poorly understood.
RESULTS: Here, we describe †Sirenobethylus charybdis n. gen. & sp., based on sixteen adult female wasps in Kachin amber from the mid-Cretaceous, 99 Mya (million years ago), and place it in Chrysidoidea: †Sirenobethylidae n. fam. The fossils display unique morphological modifications on the tip of the abdomen consisting of three flaps from the modified abdominal sternum 6 and tergum and sternum 7; the lower flap formed fro

Brain anatomy provides key evidence for the relationships between ray-finned fishes1, but two major limitations obscure our understanding of neuroanatomical evolution in this major vertebrate group. First, the deepest branching living lineages are separated from the group's common ancestor by hundreds of millions of years, with indications that aspects of their brain morphology-like other aspects of their anatomy2,3-are specialized relative to primitive conditions. Second, there are no direct constraints on brain morphology in the earliest ray-finned fishes beyond the coarse picture provided b

Three Hipparion trails, two from adults and one from a juvenile dating from about 3.5 Myr ago, have now been found in Laetoli. Comparison of the Hipparion footprints with a variety of imprints made by domestic horses showed that the animals moved with a running walk over the soft and slippery soil of Laetoli: in the alternative hind-fore-hind-fore footfall sequence one foot is always close to the ground and can take over the body weight if the supporting foot slides. The smaller juvenile was taking relatively longer strides than the adult. Body support was provided mainly by the third main toe

Judgemental positions are presented on research priorities in regard to the health effects from stationary sources of fossil fuel combustion products. Hopefully, they can provide guidance for efforts to ensure that national energy needs are met with minimum environmental and economic burdens on the public. The major areas include epidemiological studies, controlled biological studies, mutagenesis and carcinogenesis, trace elements, monitoring and analysis.

Kozo washi is an archival-grade paper commonly used in the conservation of museum objects. This paper can be combined with widely used archival adhesives to form lightweight composites of natural fibers and thermoplastic resin, which can be used in fossil preparation. Unlike conventional gypsum compounds, epoxy, or metal supports, paper-resin composites are easily reversed and are made from archival materials, so they conform to modern conservation standards. We present the new "Mayborn Method," a suite of techniques for reconstructing fossil specimens while retaining suitability for radiograp

The fossil fish Ptychodus Agassiz, 1834, characterized by a highly distinctive grinding dentition and an estimated gigantic body size (up to around 10 m), has remained one of the most enigmatic extinct elasmobranchs (i.e. sharks, skates and rays) for nearly two centuries. This widespread Cretaceous taxon is common in Albian to Campanian deposits from almost all continents. However, specimens mostly consist of isolated teeth or more or less complete dentitions, whereas cranial and post-cranial skeletal elements are very rare. Here we describe newly discovered material from the early Late Cretac

Chromium is one of the most noxious toxins that causes toxic effects in poultry. Coral fossils contain calcium, magnesium and other minerals and have antibacterial, fungistatic and anti-oxidative action. In our previous study, coral fossils showed protective effects against lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) toxicities in broilers. Our current study evaluated the effects of coral fossil on blood biochemistry and organ histology in chromium (Cr) exposed broilers. 90-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to three equal groups, each containing 30. Group A acted as control, receiving the standard

Recent chronological studies of the Sima de los Huesos (SH) hominin fossil site, Atapuerca, Spain, have established a close minimum age of at least 430 ka for sedimentary material immediately overlying the human remains. However, a firm maximum age limit still needs to be established for the SH fossils in order to better constrain the timing for the onset of Neandertal speciation. In the present study, we address this important chronological gap at SH by providing direct ages for the sediment deposits that host, and immediately underlie, the hominin fossils. Depositional ages were obtained usi

BACKGROUND: Gnetophytes are a key group, possessing characters of gymnosperms and angiosperms. In spite of numerous studies, their exact relationship with other plant groups is still uncertain. Extant members of the group are isolated remnants of a formerly diverse group. The range of this diversity, however, is quite inconclusive. More fossil gnetophytes as well as revisions and reviews of existing data are needed.
SCOPE: This paper reviews accumulated data on the exine ultrastructure of taxa included and/or related to gnetophytes with different degrees of certainty. Here we have divided pos

The animal fossil record is a non-uniform archive of evolutionary history in which exceptional preservation diminishes toward the present,1,2,3 with biomineralized skeletal elements constituting the majority of the fossil record. Preservation of soft tissues requires rare combinations of chemical, biological, and physical conditions that preclude or delay decay until biological substrates can be geologically stabilized via mineralization or maturation.4 However, during the late Ediacaran Period (∼579-539 mya) fossilization of soft-bodied macroorganisms was common across a wide range of deposit

The evolution of the hominin pelvis is commonly modeled as a series of stages driven largely by the requirements of bipedal locomotion, reproduction, thermoregulation, and pelvic floor muscular support. These patterns are complicated by variation in canal dimensions in relationship with different changes in overall pelvic breadths. To quantify this complexity, we examine pelvic canal dimensions relative to body mass and bi-iliac and biacetabular breadths in a global human skeletal sample (N = 229) and 10 hominin fossils. Relative to measures of pelvic breadth and body mass, there is substantia

Neocortical expansion is a key innovation of crown primates, although fossil evidence for how the neocortex has evolved remains elusive. We studied neocortical evolution using virtual brain endocasts from extant and Eocene-Miocene fossil primates. We found that neocortex size increased in parallel across crown primate clades, with rapid increases in tarsiers and anthropoids. Although the frontal lobe is commonly described as having expanded disproportionately in primates, we show that it evolved gradually, following a common pattern for allometric scaling. By contrast, nonfrontal neocortical r

The paper reports a find of a left lower molar (m1) of a pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus sp.) from Holocene deposits of the Ust-Log-5 rock shelter, which is on the right bank of the Irgina River at the boundary between Perm Krai and Sverdlovsk Oblast. Radiocarbon dating assigns the deposits containing the pipistrelle tooth to the Middle-to-Late Holocene transition. The find of Pipistrellus sp. is of considerable interest for understanding the past distribution history of bats of the genus in the Urals.

The Upper Jurassic Solnhofen Archipelago of Germany has yielded a pterosaur assemblage that has long underpinned and continues to dominate much of our understanding of these flying reptiles. Knowledge of how this assemblage was shaped by processes of fossilization, critical for generating robust paleobiological hypotheses, remains limited. Here, we combine fatal trauma case studies with quantitative taphonomic data to reveal two distinct fossilization pathways. Catastrophic storms played a primary role, preferentially sampling small, immature pterosaurs. Storms caused these pterosaurs to drown

Replacing fossil carbon- with renewable carbon-based technologies is imperative for transitioning to sustainable chemical production. However, most production pathways based on renewable carbon are currently economically unappealing. Here, we show that hybrid clusters exploiting synergies between different fossil and renewable carbon-based processes in terms of heat, mass, and power integration could make defossilized chemical technologies more competitive. We consider an integrated carbon cluster based on fossil and renewable carbon feedstocks for methanol production, including a novel oxy-co

Biochemical applications are increasingly utilized in paleontological studies, especially for detecting ancient proteins in fossil samples. Histopathological staining techniques have been applied, but they have yet to specifically target type I collagen, the primary bone matrix protein and the most significant protein of interest in paleoproteomic research. Moreover, these staining methods are often applied to demineralized fossils, which remove the original microstructure of the bone matrix and increase the risk of contamination. To address these limitations, this study aimed to test the effe

Crocodylomorphs constitute a clade of archosaurs that have thrived since the Mesozoic until today and have survived numerous major biological crises. Contrary to historic belief, their semiaquatic extant representatives (crocodylians) are not living fossils, and, during their evolutionary history, crocodylomorphs have evolved to live in a variety of environments. This review aims to summarize the non-semiaquatic adaptations (i.e., either terrestrial or fully aquatic) of different groups from different periods, highlighting how exactly those different lifestyles are inferred for those animals,

There are many hypotheses regarding influences on the early hominin biogeographic spread into Eurasia; among them is increased meat-eating. Dmanisi in Georgia is one of the rare Early Pleistocene sites in Eurasia, and here we present primary information and analysis of the medium and large mammal taphonomy, contributing information about site formation and the hominins' interaction with the fauna. Nearly 85% of the specimens come from the B1 stratum. Relative abundances of mammal families demonstrate some bias toward carnivores, especially Canis borjgali, and diverse Felidae species. Bones dis

The evolution of the mammalian middle ear is thought to provide an example of 'recapitulation'-the theory that the present embryological development of a species reflects its evolutionary history. Accumulating data from both developmental biology and palaeontology have suggested that the transformation of post-dentary jaw elements into cranial ear bones occurred several times in mammals1,2. In addition, well-preserved fossils have revealed transitional stages in the evolution of the mammalian middle ear1,3,4. But questions remain concerning middle-ear evolution, such as how and why the post-de

Symbiont-bearing and non-symbiotic marine bivalves were used as model organisms to establish biosignatures for the detection of distinctive symbioses in ancient bivalves. For this purpose, the isotopic composition of lipids (δ13C) and bulk organic shell matrix (δ13C, δ34S, δ15N) from shells of several thiotrophic, phototrophic, or non-symbiotic bivalves were compared (phototrophic: Fragum fragum, Fragum unedo, Tridacna maxima; thiotrophic: Codakia tigerina, Fimbria fimbriata, Anodontia sp.; non-symbiotic: Tapes dorsatus, Vasticardium vertebratum, Scutarcopagia sp.). ∆13C values of bulk organic
