Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma (NTAPP) is attracting widespread interest for use in medical applications. The tissue repair capacity of NTAPP has been reported in various fields; however, little is known about its effect on fracture healing. Non-union or delayed union after a fracture is a clinical challenge. In this study, we aimed to investigate how NTAPP irradiation promotes fracture healing in a non-union fracture model and its underlying mechanism, in vitro and in vivo. For the in vivo study, we created normal and non-union fracture models in LEW/SsNSlc rats to investigate the ef

AIMS: This study aimed to demonstrate the promoting effect of elastic fixation on fracture, and further explore its mechanism at the gene and protein expression levels.
METHODS: A closed tibial fracture model was established using 12 male Japanese white rabbits, and divided into elastic and stiff fixation groups based on different fixation methods. Two weeks after the operation, a radiograph and pathological examination of callus tissue were used to evaluate fracture healing. Then, the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were examined in the callus using proteomics. Finally, in vitro cel

INTRODUCTION: Despite the prevalence of renal impairments, the existing literature examining fracture healing in the upper limb in patients with renal impairment is sparse. This study hence aims to investigate the effect of renal impairment on time to fracture healing after distal radius fracture fixation surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients above 50 years old who underwent distal radius fracture fixation via volar plating were included. Time to fracture healing was defined as duration between day of surgery and presence of radiographic union as evidence by bridging of callus or osseous b

Since the 1970s, the 2%-10% rule has been used to describe the range of interfragmentary gap closure strains that are conducive for secondary bone healing. Interpreting the available evidence for the association between strain and bone healing remains challenging because interfragmentary strain is impossible to directly measure in vivo. The question of how much strain occurs within and around the fracture gap is also difficult to resolve using bench tests with osteotomy models because these do not reflect the complexity of injury patterns seen in the clinic. To account for these challenges, we

Fracture healing is a complex process requiring mechanical stability, an osteoconductive matrix, and osteoinductive and osteogenic biology. This intricate process is easily disrupted by various patient factors such as chronic disease and lifestyle. As the medical complexity and age of patients with fractures continue to increase, the importance of developing relevant experimental models is becoming paramount in preclinical research. The objective of this review is to describe the most common small animal models of systemically impaired fracture healing used in the orthopedic literature includi

While most bones fully self-heal, certain diseases require bone allograft to assist with fracture healing. Bone allografts offer promise as treatments for such fractures due to their osteogenic properties. However, current bone allografts made of decellularized bone extracellular matrix (ECM) have high failure rates, and thus grafts which improve fracture healing outcomes are needed. Understanding specific changes to the ECM proteome during normal fracture healing would enable the identification of key proteins that could be used enhance osteogenicity of bone allograft. Here, we performed a ti

Cerclage wire is widely used in the treatment of fracture internal fixation and is shown effective in clinic. But a report by S.L. has pointed that the wire loop delayed the growth of bone. We have established a radius fracture model to study the possible detrimental effects of cerclage wire on fracture healing and the potential mechanism. By high-resolution CT analysis cerclage wire is found to delay fracture healing, by histological assessment cerclage wire is found to extended the time of hematoma and the marrow cavity appearing, by confocal microscopy cerclage wire decreased the content of

INTRODUCTION: High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) has enabled us to observe the changes in bone microarchitecture over time in vivo. In this study, the process of fracture healing was analyzed using HR-pQCT in patients with distal radius fracture who underwent osteosynthesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 10 fracture sites identified from four patients with a distal radius fracture who underwent internal fixation with a volar locking plate (mean age 68.8 years, all women) were investigated. HR-pQCT was performed within a week (baseline) 4, 12, and 24 week

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates are a main component in the therapy of osteoporosis and other bone resorptive diseases. Previous studies have shown a positive effect of systemically applied bisphosphonates on fracture healing. Nevertheless high doses are related to side effects like osteonecrosis of the jaw, nephrotoxis and gastrointestinal symptoms. In this study we investigated the effect of locally applied pamidronate on fracture healing.
METHODS: In a rodent model a simple femur fracture was set in female Wistar rats. We performed intramedullary fixation of the fracture and placed a collagen

BACKGROUND: Comminuted fractures can occur due to severe traumas. The treatment of these fractures that may cause serious morbidity and sometimes mortality is N-butyl cyanoacrylate. It has been reported that this adhesive provides sufficient rigid fixation for bone healing. This study aims to examine cyanoacrylate radiologically and histologically to determine whether it provides adequate recovery in segmental fractures. The secondary objective is to evaluate N-butyl cyanoacrylate, an adhesive material that can hold the fragments on the fracture line together following reduction.
METHODS: Six

An 82-year-old woman sustained a trochanteric fracture of the left femur after a fall. Fracture fixation was performed using proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) II, and she was able to walk with a T-cane after 3 months. Eleven months following the operation, the patient presented with left hip pain after a fall. Radiographs showed a subchondral collapse of the femoral head located above the blade tip. The authors removed the PFNA-II and subsequently performed cemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty. Histological evaluation of the femoral head showed osteoporosis with no evidence of osteonecros

Bone provides momentary strength and fatigue strength, and bone strength decreases with age. In elderly men and women with fragile bones osteoporotic fractures frequently occur. Fragility fracture occurs as a consequence of the decrease in momentary strength, and fragility fracture is one of the pathological fractures. In patients with the decrease in fatigue strength, insufficiency fractures frequently occurs. Insufficiency fracture is the same term as stress or fatigue fracture.

Accurate monitoring of bone regeneration and fracture healing is essential for optimizing orthopedic outcomes and guiding timely clinical interventions. While radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remain standard tools, their limitations, particularly in detecting early biological activity and evaluating healing around implants, have prompted exploration of advanced imaging techniques. This narrative review was conducted through a structured search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for studies published between 2000 and 2025 using predefined

To date, Despite the widespread and mature clinical application of fracture treatment techniques, a large number of patients still suffer from nonunion due to impaired bone regeneration function. In the past few years, growing evidence has shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in many physiological processes and are involved in the regulation of bone metabolic diseases. In this study, we evaluated the role of miR-34c-5p in in vitro osteogenesis using methods including Alizarin Red S staining, ALP staining, quantitative PCR, and western blotting. Additionally, we established a mous

Advancements in fracture fixation have significantly reshaped orthopedic trauma management by improving mechanical stability and promoting biological healing. This retrospective observational study assessed clinical and biomechanical outcomes in 500 patients who underwent surgical fixation for radiologically confirmed fractures. Patients were categorized into two groups: Group A received conventional fixation methods (e.g., standard plates and screws), while Group B was treated with advanced systems, including locking plates, intramedullary nails, minimally invasive percutaneous osteosynthesis
