The ability to bind and utilize hemin is a trait common to many human pathogens. Nevertheless, the relationship between Legionella pneumophila, the agent of Legionnaires' disease, and hemin has received little attention. Thus, we explored the capacity of a virulent, serogroup 1 strain of L. pneumophila to bind hemin and use it as an iron source. Hemin, but not protoporphyrin IX, restored bacterial growth in iron-limiting media, indicating that it can serve as an iron source for L. pneumophila. In support of this idea, we observed that wildtype legionellae were able to bind 50 to 60% of added h

Detailed knowledge of transcriptional responses to environmental cues or developmental stimuli requires single-cell resolution. We performed 2 single-cell RNAseq experiments of adult females and males of Daphnia magna, a freshwater plankton crustacean which is both a classic and emerging new model for eco-physiology, toxicology, and evolutionary genomics. We were able to identify >25 distinct cell types about half of which could be functionally annotated. First, we identified ovaries- and testis-related cell types by focusing on female- and male-specific clusters. Second, we compared markers b

DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) are well-characterized epigenetic enzymes responsible for transferring methyl groups to and from DNA. Three main DNMT orthologues differ in function and methylation capability. They each are evolutionarily conserved across diverse taxa, but few studies investigate them jointly. We did so in Daphnia, freshwater microcrustaceans used extensively in research on genetic diversity, phenotypic plasticity, and maternal effects. Daphnia are capable of reproducing asexually through cyclic parthenogenesis, making the Daphnia system an ideal choice for studying epigenetic p

Pacific lamprey, an anadromous fish native to the North Pacific Ocean, are imperiled in parts of their range. Many aspects of their biology are not fully understood, including the physiology of their spawning migration. Pacific lamprey exhibit two divergent reproductive life histories: early-maturing and late-maturing. Interior Columbia River early-maturing lamprey complete the final stages of gonadal maturation ~ 10 months after entering freshwater. From the same migrating cohort, the late-maturing lamprey wait ~ 22 months to complete maturation. This study sought to characterize the reproduc

Syphilis was perceived to be a new disease in Europe in the late 15th century, igniting a debate about its origin that continues today in anthropological, historical, and medical circles. We move beyond this age-old debate using an interdisciplinary approach that tackles broader questions to advance the understanding of treponemal infection (syphilis, yaws, bejel, and pinta). How did the causative organism(s) and humans co-evolve? How did the related diseases caused by Treponema pallidum emerge in different parts of the world and affect people across both time and space? How are T. pallidum su

Rhinogobio nasutus, a freshwater fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae, is primarily distributed in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River. However, overfishing and habitat degradation have resulted in a marked decline in its wild populations, and the species was listed as a Class II nationally protected aquatic wildlife species in China in 2021. Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) provide a valuable resource for fish germplasm conservation and reproductive biotechnology. In this study, we successfully established a long-term cultured germ-cell population with spermatogonial stem cell

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, or bilharzia, is a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. Infection by Schistosoma mansoni in humans results when cercariae emerge into water from freshwater snails in the genus Biomphalaria and seek out and penetrate human skin. The snail Biomphalaria straminea is native to South America and is now also present in Central America and China, and represents a potential vector host for spreading schistosomiasis. To date, genomic information for the genus is restricted to the neotropical species Biomphalaria glabrata. This limits und

The growth and reproductive performance of fish are influenced by ecological factors. This study investigated the biology of the climbing perch, Anabas testudineus, in relation to habitat. A total of 2,880 climbing perch were collected from three habitats (irrigation canal, swamp and paddy field) in Peninsular Malaysia during the dry and rainy seasons, and their biometric measurements (total length and body weight) and sexual maturity indices were measured. Two-way Classification Analysis (TCA) revealed significant sexual dimorphism in all morphometric parameters, significant habitat effects o

BACKGROUND: Cnidocytes, the eponymous cell type of the Cnidaria, facilitate both sensory and secretory functions and are among the most complex animal cell types known. In addition to their structural complexity, cnidocytes display complex sensory attributes, integrating both chemical and mechanical cues from the environment into their discharge behavior. Despite more than a century of work aimed at understanding the sensory biology of cnidocytes, the specific sensory receptor genes that regulate their function remain unknown.
RESULTS: Here we report that light also regulates cnidocyte functi

In the blood fluke family Schistosomatidae, marine snails are well known as intermediate hosts. Eight families of marine snails have thus far been reported to host schistosomes across the world, most of which have been implicated in human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) outbreaks. As part of our larger effort to define the species diversity and biology of schistosomes in Argentina, in particular their role in causing HCD, we searched in the marine pulmonate snail (Siphonaria lessoni) for a schistosome species described previously from S. lessoni from southern Argentina. Additionally, gulls (Larus d

Active substances of pesticides, biocides or pharmaceuticals can induce adverse side effects in the aquatic ecosystem, necessitating environmental hazard and risk assessment prior to substance registration. The freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna is a model organism for acute and chronic toxicity assessment representing aquatic invertebrates. However, standardized tests involving daphnia are restricted to the endpoints immobility and reproduction and thus provide only limited insights into the underlying modes-of-action. Here, we applied transcriptome profiling to a modified D. magna Acute Imm

Polystomatid monogeneans have a wide diversity of life cycles correlated with the varied ecology and behaviour of their aquatic vertebrate hosts. Typically, transmission involves a swimming infective larva but most hosts are amphibious and invasion is interrupted when hosts leave water. A key life cycle adaptation involves a uterus that, in the most specialised cases, may contain several hundred fully-developed larvae prepared for instant host-to-host transmission. By contrast, one subfamily of the Polystomatidae - the Polystomoidinae, specific to chelonians (freshwater turtles) - has a simpli

BACKGROUND: Amidst the escalating loss of global biodiversity, freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) have become one of the most imperiled animal groups. Acquiring more biological and phylogenetic information on understudied taxa constitutes a pivotal aspect of conservation biology. Consequently, a comprehensive examination was conducted on Koreosolenaia, Parvasolenaia, and Sinosolenaia from China encompassing morphology, anatomy, distribution, and molecular systematics to provide theoretical support for future species endangerment assessments and biodiversity conservation.
RESULTS: The shell

Elasmobranchs are facing severe threats worldwide from overfishing and related high bycatch, and particularly so in the Mediterranean Sea, where 65% of sharks and rays are now at risk of extinction. Understanding their biology and ecological roles is crucial for the development of effective conservation strategies. This study analysed the trophic ecology of the vulnerable blackspotted smooth-hound (Mustelus punctulatus) in three sub-areas of the northwestern Adriatic Sea, combining stomach content and stable isotope analyses. We hypothesized that feeding strategies vary in response to differen

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic trematode disease that affects over 240 million people worldwide. The Schistosoma lifecycle is complex, involving transmission via specific intermediate-host freshwater snails. Predictive mathematical models of Schistosoma transmission have often chosen to simplify or ignore the details of environmental human-snail interaction in their analyses. Schistosome transmission models now aim to provide better precision for policy planning of elimination of transmission. This heightens the importance of including the environmental complexity of vect

Chromatin modifications function as critical regulators of gene expression and cellular identity, especially in the regulation and maintenance of the pluripotent state. However, many studies of chromatin modification in stem cells-and pluripotent stem cells in particular-are performed in mammalian stem cell culture, an in vitro condition mimicking a very transient state during mammalian development. Thus, new models for studying pluripotent stem cells in vivo could be helpful for understanding the roles of chromatin modification, for confirming prior in vitro studies, and for exploring evoluti

The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) presents a significant global health challenge, underscoring the urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents. Actinomycetes, particularly Streptomyces species, are well known for synthesizing bioactive compounds with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. This review explores the diversity and antimicrobial potential of actinomycetes from Saudi Arabia's unique ecosystems, including terrestrial (soil, rhizosphere), aquatic (marine, freshwater), extreme (deserts, caves, hot springs, mountains, and mangroves), and other uniq

Water and land resources have been aggressively exploited in the recent decades to meet the growing demands for food. The changing climate has prompted rice scientists and farmers of the tropics and subtropics to adopt the direct seeded rice (DSR) system. DSR system of rice cultivation significantly reduces freshwater consumption and labor requirements, while increasing system productivity, resource use efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Early root vigor is an essential trait required in an ideal DSR system of rice cultivation to ensure a good crop stand, adequate uptake of wat

Over 1999-2002, an extensive series of contaminant studies was conducted on freshwater biota of Canada's Arctic and Subarctic regions. The majority of inorganic contaminant studies focused on mercury and fish. While mercury concentrations were low in benthic feeding fish such as whitefish, predatory fish such as lake trout, pike, and walleye frequently had mercury levels which exceeded 0.2 mug/g, the consumption guideline for frequent consumers of fish, and 0.5 microg/g, the guideline for the commercial use of fish. Numerous consumption advisories were issued for lakes along the Mackenzie Rive

The Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii, Brandt, 1869) is a potamodromous freshwater species with major ecological and commercial importance. Natural populations across the main Siberian River basins have declined so severely that the species is now classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This narrative analysis synthesizes current scientific knowledge regarding the ecology, reproductive biology, conservation status, and nutritional value of products derived from A. baerii, with the aim of providing an integrated perspective on this species, which has recently been introduced
