Lever-press duration as a measure of frustration in sucrose and drug reinforcement.

RATIONALE: Currently there is little research into the role of frustration in substance use disorders despite research showing that frustration tolerance in humans is associated with a lower likelihood of developing substance use problems, better outcomes in recovery, and fewer relapses. OBJECTIVE: In order to address this need, our studies use a rat model to focus on frustration-related behavior in natural reward and addiction-related behavioral procedures. Frustration is defined as when a subject is unable to achieve a reinforcer, receives less of a reinforcer than anticipated, or has to wo

New ordered phase in geometrically frustrated generalized XY model.

Critical properties of a geometrically frustrated generalized XY model with antiferromagnetic (AFM) and third-order antinematic (AN3) couplings on a triangular lattice are studied by Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that such a generalization leads to a phase diagram consisting of three different quasi-long-range ordered (QLRO) phases. Compared to the model with the second-order antinematic (AN2) coupling, besides the AFM and AN3 phases which appear in the limits of relatively strong AFM and AN3 interactions, respectively, it includes an additional complex canted antiferromagnetic (CAFM) ph

The Frustrated and Helpless Healer: Pathways Approaches to Posttraumatic Stress Disorders.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is a psychophysiological disorder, characterized by the following: chronic sympathetic nervous activation; persisting perceptual/sensory vigilance for threats; recurrent distressing memories of the event, including intrusive memories, flashbacks lived as if in the present moment, and nightmares; and a persisting negative emotional state including fear and shame. The psychophysiological basis for this disorder calls for psychophysiologically based interventions. This article presents the case narrative of a 29-year-old national guardsman, exposed to combat trauma a

Interpersonal and noninterpersonal interactions, interpersonal motives, and the effect of frustrated motives.

A new circumplex model of interpersonal interaction emphasizes the motives that drive interpersonal behaviors and the negative affect (such as anger) that occurs when a strongly activated motive is frustrated. This study examined the model experimentally by varying conditions designed to activate and frustrate interpersonal motives. One hundred twenty-nine students engaged in text-based discussions using a computer. Three factors were varied: (a) activation of interpersonal motives--participants believed the interaction was interpersonal (with a human) or noninterpersonal (with a computer); (b

The psychological pathways to maritime English motivation: need satisfaction, frustration, and learning outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies have confirmed the positive effects of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) on educational motivation; however, how its three core psychological needs operate in the high-pressure context of maritime English training remains underexplored. To address this gap, in the present study, we examined the drivers of English-learning motivation among Chinese maritime cadets preparing for Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW) certification using a non-WEIRD sample. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was utilized. The qu

Associations Between Social Determinants of Health, Mental Effort, and Frustration for Voice Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Early life adversity and related social determinants of health (SDOHs) are risk factors for trauma, learning and regulation difficulties, and poor adult health outcomes, such as functional voice disorders (FVDs). It is unknown if learning new voice techniques is confounded by a history of adverse experiences. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between SDOHs and cognitive effort in voice therapy. METHODS: Patients referred for voice therapy at the Emory Voice Center in Atlanta, GA were recruited to participate in a non-experimental prospective study using

Relapse risk, frustration tolerance, and motivational readiness for change in substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are chronic brain diseases characterized by compulsive use of legal or illegal substances despite harm. Although pharmacological and psychosocial interventions have advanced, relapse remains common. Understanding psychological factors such as frustration tolerance and readiness to change is essential for guiding culturally sensitive relapse‑prevention strategies. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 288 Egyptian outpatients diagnosed with substance use disorders, predominantly involving opioids and hallucinogens, with most participant

Metallic Bonding in Close-Packed Structures: Structural Frustration from a Hidden Gauge Symmetry.

Based on its simple valence electron configuration, we may expect lithium to have straightforward physical properties that are easily explained. However, solid lithium, when cooled below 77 K, develops a complex structure that has been debated for decades. A close parallel is found in sodium below 36 K where the crystal structure still remains unresolved. In this Letter, we explore a possible driving force behind this complexity. We begin with the observation that Li and Na form close-packed structures at low temperatures. We demonstrate a gauge symmetry that forces all close-packed structures

Research on intervention strategies for fire rescue personnel's competency frustration: EEG experimental validation.

In order to accurately measure the level of competency frustration and what measures to take to alleviate the negative effects of competency frustration, 35 graduate students were selected to verify the effect of the frontal lobe α asymmetry (FAA) as a judgement of the competence frustration level using EEG experimental method. On this basis, through two stopwatch stopping experiments, 108 fire rescue personnel were selected to conduct the experiments to investigate the intervention effects of developmental feedback and compassion-focused therapy in turn. The results showed that frontal α asym

Frustration and Emotional Regulation in Nonsyndromic Craniosynostosis: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Nonsyndromic craniosynostosis may manifest with complex behavioral, attentional, and emotional sequelae. The authors characterized higher level brain connectivity in adolescent nonsyndromic craniosynostosis patients in response to emotional frustration. METHODS: Surgically corrected patients older than 9 years with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis were age/sex/handedness matched to controls. Patients participated in a "go/no-go" task, structured as win/lose/recovery paradigms. BioImage Suite was used to analyze whole-brain intrinsic connectivity between tasks with cluster-corrected g

Activation or frustration of anti-tumor responses by T-cell-based immune modulation.

Many types of tumors (e.g. virus-induced tumors, melanomas, tumors over-expressing certain oncogenes) often express antigens that can induce T-cell-mediated tumor-specific immune responses. Nonetheless, many such tumors manage to circumvent the induction of an effective anti-tumor T-cell response, as is apparent from the many tumor-bearing patients. Therefore, optimally designed vaccination protocols may evoke a more powerful and competent T-cell-mediated anti-tumor response, allowing the host to effectively deal with at least some cancers. These vaccination approaches might include immunizati

Fever, Frustration and Fortitude: A Qualitative Exploration of Nursing Practice in Paediatric Settings.

BACKGROUND: Fever is one of the most common symptoms in children and a leading cause of their hospitalisation. Nurses, as primary caregivers in paediatric wards, play a pivotal role in the assessment and management of children with fever. However, nurses' perceptions and experiences of fever management are influenced by cultural contexts, psychological and social factors, as well as prevailing health system policies. AIM: The aim of the study was to explore nurses' perceptions influencing their management of childhood fever, including barriers and facilitators to evidence-based practice. DES

Stimulating the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) modulates frustration-induced aggression: A tDCS experiment.

BACKGROUND: The prefrontal cortex is crucial for top-down regulation of aggression, but the neural underpinnings of aggression are still poorly understood. Past research showed the transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) modulates aggression following exposure to risk factors for aggression (e.g., social exclusion, violent media). Although frustration is a key risk factor for aggression, no study to date has examined the modulatory role of tDCS on frustration-induced aggression. OBJECTIVES: By exploring the VLPFC involvement in frustrati

Frustration influences impact of history and disciplinary attitudes on physical discipline decision making.

Although intergenerational patterns of punitive physical punishment garner considerable research attention, the mechanisms by which historical, cognitive, and contextual factors interplay to influence disciplinary responding remains poorly understood. Disciplinary attitudes have been shown to mediate the association between disciplinary history and disciplinary responding. The present study investigated whether frustration influences these mediation effects. Half of a sample of 330 undergraduates was randomly assigned to frustration induction. Structural equation modeling confirmed that, for p

Anger/frustration, task persistence, and conduct problems in childhood: a behavioral genetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individual differences in conduct problems arise in part from proneness to anger/frustration and poor self-regulation of behavior. However, the genetic and environmental etiology of these connections is not known. METHOD: Using a twin design, we examined genetic and environmental covariation underlying the well-documented correlations between anger/frustration, poor attention regulation (i.e., task persistence), and conduct problems in childhood. Participants included 105 pairs of MZ twins and 154 pairs of same-sex DZ twins (4-8 year olds). Independent observers rated child persis

Frustrated Lewis Pairs Enable Efficient Polyethylene Oxidative Upcycling.

Catalytic oxidative upcycling of waste polyethylene (PE) into value-added dicarboxylic acids under mild conditions is highly attractive, yet the efficient activation of molecular oxygen remains a fundamental challenge. Herein, we report a catalyst microenvironment engineering strategy that introduces frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) characteristics into established high-performance catalysts for unlocking their full catalytic potential, rather than relying on the development of entirely new catalytic materials. Using a Co-based catalyst as an example, we demonstrated that the designed FLP-CoOx cat

Adaptive ligand-mediated frustrated assembly of gold tetrahedral nanoparticles.

Polyhedral packing provides a fundamental framework for understanding how anisotropic nanoscale building blocks organize into ordered superstructures. However, controlling the assembly pathways of tetrahedral nanoparticles remains challenging due to their intrinsic geometric frustration and complex free-energy landscapes. Herein, we develop an adaptive solution-phase assembly strategy for gold tetrahedral nanoparticles by regulating their frustrated packing pathways. Thiol-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) ligands grafted onto tetrahedra provide dynamic interparticle interactions through Ho

Tough Supramolecular Glasses Enabled by Frustrated Non-Covalent Complexation.

Supramolecular glasses, as noncovalently cross-linked amorphous materials, are hampered by a fundamental trade-off between vitrification and mechanical performance. Here we propose a strategy-"frustrated non-covalent complexation"-inspired by frustrated Lewis pairs to overcome this limitation. This is achieved by installing sterically hindering isopropyl groups adjacent to directional squaramide hydrogen-bonding motifs. Relative to a nonfrustrated control, this design not only generates more loosely packed hydrogen-bonded domains but also shifts the dominant interactions from squaramide-squara
