Rapid reduction of viruria and stabilization of allograft function by fusidic acid in a renal transplant recipient with JC virus-associated nephropathy.

JC virus (JCV)-associated nephropathy has been increasingly recognized as a cause of allograft dysfunction with graft loss in renal transplant recipients. Like many other opportunistic viral infections in transplant recipients, there are currently limited therapeutic options for this condition. Fusidic acid has previously been reported to exhibit antiviral activity against JCV in in vitro assays. We report the first in vivo study to document the rapid reduction of JC viruria and stabilization of allograft function by oral fusidic acid (fusidate sodium) in a deceased donor renal transplant reci

Prevalence and genetic characteristics of fusidic acid resistant Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates: Emergence of t030 strains carrying fusB in Tehran, Iran.

The literature on fusidic acid resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains is scarce in Iran, although the emergence of these strains in health care settings is increasing. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 68 fusidic acid resistant S. aureus strains to learn about the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of strains isolated from hospitalized patients. In the present study, the prevalence of resistance to fusidic acid in S. aureus isolates was 15.1%. Fusidic acid resistance determinative factors (fusB, fusC and fusD) were identified by multiplex PCR assay. T

Polymyxin B and fusidic acid, a novel potent synergistic combination against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli isolates with polymyxin B resistance.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria and comparatively limited options of antibiotics pose a major threat to public health worldwide. Polymyxin B is the last resort against extensively resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. However, a large number of Gram-negative bacteria exhibited high-level resistance to Polymyxin B, bringing challenges for antimicrobial chemotherapy. Combination therapies using polymyxins and other antibiotics are recommended to treat multidrug-resistant pathogens. In this study, we selected Gram-negative bacterial strains, i

Outcome of debridement and retention in prosthetic joint infections by methicillin-resistant staphylococci, with special reference to rifampin and fusidic acid combination therapy.

The management of prosthetic joint infections remains a clinical challenge, particularly infections due to methicillin-resistant staphylococci. Previously, this infection was considered a contraindication to debridement and retention strategies. This retrospective cohort study examined the treatment and outcomes of patients with arthroplasty infection by methicillin-resistant staphylococci managed by debridement and retention in conjunction with rifampin-fusidic acid combination therapy. Over an 11-year period, there were 43 patients with infection by methicillin-resistant staphylococci manage

The pharmacokinetics and protein-binding of fusidic acid in patients with severe renal failure requiring either haemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Fusidic acid is metabolized and excreted by the liver. It is generally assumed that renal impairment has no effect on serum concentrations. However, there are few data on the pharmacokinetics of fusidic acid in patients with chronic renal failure, particularly in those requiring dialysis. Seven patients with chronic renal failure on haemodialysis were given 500 mg sodium fusidate orally every 8 h for the 48 h between dialysis. Seven patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) were given the same dosage regimen for seven doses. Fusidic acid concentrations were measured by HPLC.

Comparative study of mupirocin and oral co-trimoxazole plus topical fusidic acid in eradication of nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Mupirocin is a topically applied drug that is very active in the eradication of nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, studies designed to compare mupirocin treatment with other antimicrobial regimens are lacking. We therefore conducted an open, prospective, randomized, controlled trial to compare the efficacy and safety of mupirocin versus those of oral co-trimoxazole plus topical fusidic acid (both regimens with a clorhexidine scrub bath) for the eradication of MRSA from nasal and extranasal carriers of MRSA. The eradication rates with mupirocin and co

Global patterns and temporal evolution of fusidic acid resistance in Staphylococcus aureus: A genomic analysis of 2701 resistant isolates spanning six decades.

OBJECTIVES: Fusidic acid resistance in Staphylococcus aureus is a growing clinical concern, but its temporal dynamics and mechanism evolution at a global scale are poorly characterised. METHODS: We combined 2512 fusidic acid-resistant S. aureus isolates from Pathogenwatch (1964-2021) with 189 resistant isolates identified from 5051 NCBI GenBank genomes deposited January 2022-April 2026, yielding 2701 isolates across 72 countries (2549 with collection years, 1964-2025). AMR determinants were identified using AMRFinderPlus v4.2.7 and sequence types using mlst v2.23.0. Temporal mechanism shifts

Resistance to fusidic acid in Escherichia coli mediated by the type I variant of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase. A plasmid-encoded mechanism involving antibiotic binding.

Plasmid-encoded fusidic acid resistance in Escherichia coli is mediated by a common variant of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.28), an enzyme which is an effector of chloramphenicol resistance. Resistance to chloramphenicol is a consequence of acetylation of the antibiotic catalysed by the enzyme and the failure of the 3-acetoxy product to bind to bacterial ribosomes. Cell-free coupled transcription and translation studies are in agreement with genetic studies which indicated that the entire structural gene for the type I chloramphenicol acetyltransferase is necessary for the fusid

Fusidic acid in a tertiary hospital: an observational study focusing on prescriptions, tolerance and susceptibility of Staphylococcus and Cutibacterium spp. strains from bone samples.

Adverse drug reactions of broad-spectrum fluoroquinolones or rifampicin are not uncommon during osteomyelitis and orthopaedic implant infections (OOII). Thus, we made an overview (i) of the prescription of fusidic acid (FA) and (ii) of FA susceptibility of Staphylococcus sp. and Cutibacterium sp. strains isolated from bone samples. All prescriptions of FA and all bone samples with positive culture for Staphylococcus sp. or Cutibacterium sp. (Reims University Hospital June 2017-May 2021) were included. All Staphylococcus aureus strains were considered as significant, whereas Coagulase-negative

Evaluation of antibiotic resistance to orally administrable antibiotics in staphylococcal bone and joint infections in one of the largest university hospitals in Germany: is there a role for fusidic acid?

Bone and joint infections (BJIs) are often difficult to treat. Staphylococcus spp. is the major pathogen causing these infections, which is often associated with biofilm formation on prosthetic materials. Therapeutic measures are complex, ranging from surgical intervention to initial intravenous and supportive long-term oral antibiotic therapy. The options for oral antimicrobial therapy are limited, mainly due to the resistance profile of the causative pathogen and the unfavourable pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of most antibiotics in biofilm. Data analysis over a 5-year period

Semisynthetic Antimycobacterial C-3 Silicate and C-3/C-21 Ester Derivatives of Fusidic Acid: Pharmacological Evaluation and Stability Studies in Liver Microsomes, Rat Plasma, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture.

Fusidic acid (FA), a natural product fusidane triterpene-based antibiotic with unique structural features, is active in vitro against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB). While possessing good pharmacokinetics in man, FA is rapidly metabolized in rodents, thus complicating proof-of-concept studies in this model. Toward the repositioning of FA as an anti-TB agent, we herein describe the synthesis, activity, and metabolism of FA and semisynthesized ester derivatives in rat liver microsomes, rat plasma, and mycobacterial cell culture. Anaphylaxis to topically applied sodium fusidate.

Fusidic acid is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that is effective primarily on gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium species. It is often topically applied to the skin, but is also given systemically as a tablet or injection. Allergic contact dermatitis, or urticaria, has been reported as a side effect of fusidic acid treatment, whereas anaphylaxis to topically administered fusidic acid has not been reported previously. A 16-year-old boy visited an outpatient clinic for further evaluation of anaphylaxis. He suffered abrasions on his arms during exercise, which were tre

Infections after photodynamic therapy in Condyloma acuminatum patients: incidence and management.

Condyloma acuminatum (CA), or genital wart, is a sexually transmitted infection caused by human papillomaviruses. Increasing evidences demonstrated that photodynamic therapy (PDT) is effective in eliminating latent HPV infection, the major reason for CA recurrence. We observed an increasing number of infections after PDT in CA patients, which has not been reported before. This study aims to evaluate the incidence and management of infection in CA patients after PDT procedure. CA patients received PDT from January 2015 to February 2016 at the outpatient setting. Patients were randomly divided i
