Fusobacterium necrophorum and Actinomyces pyogenes associated facial and mandibular abscesses in blue duiker.

Anaerobic and aerobic cultures of facial and mandibular abscesses were made from 12 blue duiker (Cephalophus monticola fusicolor) housed at the Deer and Duiker Research Facility of the Pennsylvania State University (USA). Increases in concentrations of total protein and serum globulin occurred in all cases. Actinomyces pyogenes was isolated from nine animals. Fusobacterium necrophorum was present in eight and Bacteroides sp. was found in seven animals; other genera of isolated bacteria included: Streptococcus (from two animals), Lactobacillus (one), Staphylococcus (one) and Actinomyces (two).

[Post-angina septicemia caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum in a 7-year-old child].

A fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia due to a neglected peritonsillar abscess is reported in a 7 year-old boy with no significant past medical history. Osteo-articulary, hepatic and pleuro-pulmonary septic localizations, with an otherwise favourable outcome left severe orthopedic sequelae in the right hip. This resembles the post-peritonsillar abscess septicemia described by Lemierre in 1936 which was due to an anaerobic bacillus (fusobacterium). The reappearance of this pathology should lead to systematic anaerobic blood and abscess studies. Penicillin G and Metronidazole are still efficien

Fusobacterium necrophorum intratonsillar abscess as a source of bacteremia in a patient with a history of substance abuse.

A 22-year-old male, with a history of recreational drug use, was admitted with a 24-hour history of sore throat, bilateral otalgia, fever, chills, sweats, and pain in the upper chest. The blood cultures were positive for Fusobacterium necrophorum. A thoracic and neck soft tissue computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an intratonsillar abscess and pulmonary septic emboli. Initial treatment with Piperacillin-tazobactam and Clindamycin was de-escalated after 5 days. The patient made a complete recovery after 22 days of antibiotic treatment.

Lemierre Syndrome of the Femoral Vein, Related to Fusobacterium necrophorum Abscess of Vastus Lateralis.

BACKGROUND: Lemierre syndrome is an uncommon, potentially lethal disorder combining acute oropharyngeal infection caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, with jugular vein suppurative thrombosis, complicated by anaerobic sepsis with secondary multiple metastatic abscesses. Optimal treatment outcome with reduced or absence of sequelae can be achieved with early diagnosis. CASE REPORT: We present a clinical case of Fusobacterium necrophorum abscess complicated with femoral vein thrombosis, called atypical localization of Lemierre syndrome. This uncommon disease was diagnosed on the basis of clinic

Factor H binding as a complement evasion mechanism for an anaerobic pathogen, Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Fusobacterium necrophorum subspecies funduliforme is an obligate anaerobic Gram-negative rod causing invasive infections such as the life-threatening Lemierre's syndrome (sore throat, septicemia, jugular vein thrombosis, and disseminated infection). The aim of our study was to understand if and how F. necrophorum avoids C activation. We studied 12 F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme strains isolated from patients with sepsis. All strains were resistant to serum killing after a 1-h incubation in 20% serum. The bacteria bound, at different levels, the C inhibitor factor H (fH). Binding was ionic

Disseminated Fusobacterium necrophorum Infection Without Jugular Venous Thrombophlebitis: An Atypical Presentation of Lemierre's Syndrome.

Lemierre's syndrome is classically characterized by Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia with jugular venous thrombophlebitis, typically affecting young adults following oropharyngeal infections. We report an unusual case of disseminated F. necrophorum infection in a 53-year-old man who presented without pharyngitis or jugular venous thrombophlebitis, instead manifesting with septic pulmonary emboli, bilateral empyema, liver abscess, and portal vein thrombophlebitis. This case highlights the importance of recognizing atypical presentations of invasive Fusobacterium infections, which are associ

Fusobacterium necrophorum Brain Abscess Following Invasive Sinusitis in an Immunocompetent Adult: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: A brain abscess is a localized collection of purulent infection within the brain parenchyma. It most often occurs due to contiguous spread from sinus, otogenic, and odontogenic infections; however, it can also develop from direct intracranial contact via trauma or surgery. Fusobacterium necrophorum, an obligate anaerobic, gram-negative bacillus, is part of the normal flora of the oral cavity. Given its inherent location, F necrophorum has been shown to contribute to complications stemming from infection of the tonsils, pharynx, and teeth. Invasive infections of F necrophorum are

Low usefulness of reporting tonsillar PCR Ct-values in pharyngeal infections with Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Tonsillar Fusobacterium necrophorum PCR Ct-values were higher in participants with asymptomatic tonsillar carriage than patients with pharyngeal infections. However, Ct-values were not associated with severity of disease or predictive of development of complications and hence lacked clinical usefulness. The reporting of F. necrophorum Ct-values in clinical samples is not recommended.

Fusobacterium necrophorum Brain Abscess With Concurrent Nasopharyngeal Detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae: A Case Report.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a recognized cause of brain abscesses and has been classically associated with Lemierre syndrome. We report a case of a 17-year-old male patient who presented with seizures, fever, and altered mental status following treatment for sinusitis. Neuroimaging revealed a right frontal lobe abscess requiring surgical drainage. Anaerobic cultures from the abscess fluid grew F. necrophorum, while a respiratory polymerase chain reaction (PCR) panel from a nasopharyngeal swab detected Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Anaerobic cultures also yielded Paenibacillus barengoltzii from a sep

Prevalence of Fusobacterium necrophorum and other upper respiratory tract pathogens isolated from throat swabs.

Fusobacterium necrophorum, an anaerobic, Gram-negative rod, has been identified recently as a significant cause of persistent sore throat syndrome (PSTS). This disease is characterised by chronic, recurrent or persistent sore throat, which is believed to respond poorly to penicillin in vivo. The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of F. necrophorum in all throat swabs received in our diagnostic microbiology department and to compare the results with those for other recognised respiratory pathogens. All throat swabs received in the laboratory over a four-week period were cultured for

Diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of otomastoiditis induced by Fusobacterium necrophorum: A retrospective multicentre cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Otomastoiditis caused by the anaerobic Fusobacterium necrophorum (F. necrophorum) often induces severe complications, such as meningitis and sinus thrombosis. Early diagnosis is difficult, partly because little is known about specific early signs. Comprehensive research about clinically chosen antimicrobial therapy has not been done yet and prognostic information about otomastoiditis caused by F. necrophorum is scarce. More knowledge about this subject is required. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included all cases of otomastoiditis caused by F. necrophorum treated

Fusobacterium necrophorum-induced orbital cellulitis with intracranial involvement: a case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of a 17-year-old female who presented with orbital cellulitis and meningeal involvement secondary to severe paranasal sinusitis with positive blood culture for Fusobacterium necrophorum. The patient recovered after a 2-month course of systemic antibiotics and functional endoscopic sinus surgery.Fusobacterium necrophorum-induced orbital cellulitis is a rare entity, with only 5 previous cases reported in the literature, which are reviewed here as well. This review reveals that Fusobacterium necrophorum is an aggressive pathogen in orbital cellulitis and therefore we suggest that

Short blood culture time-to-positivity in Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia is associated with Lemierre's syndrome.

The usefulness of blood culture time-to-positivity (TTP) in the diagnosis of endovascular infections has previously been shown. Here, we investigated TTP in 41 patients with F. necrophorum bacteraemia and found an association between short TTP and Lemierre's syndrome (p = 0.026).

Pyogenic liver abscess with Prevotella species and Fusobacterium necrophorum as causative pathogens in an immunocompetent patient.

Pyogenic liver abscess of odontogenic origin in an immunocompetent patient is extremely rare. We report an immunocompetent 25-year-old male hepatitis B carrier with severe dental disease that led to the development of liver abscess. A periapical abscess in the upper left molar area was seen on his dental X-ray. Two sets of blood cultures grew Prevotella species, bacteria that are commonly found inside the oral cavity. Bacterial culture of the liver abscess drainage sample grew both Prevotella and Fusobacterium necrophorum. This led to our diagnosis of pyogenic liver abscess of dental origin, s

Detection of Fusobacterium necrophorum subsp. funduliforme in tonsillitis in young adults by real-time PCR.

Throat swabs from 61 patients, aged 18-32 years, with non-streptococcal tonsillitis (NST) and 92 healthy controls were examined for the presence of Fusobacterium necrophorum DNA using a novel TaqMan-based real-time quantitative PCR assay for F. necrophorum subspecies. The assay was based on the gyrB subunit gene, and detected F. necrophorum DNA in 48% of patients with NST and in 21% of controls (p <0.001). F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme was the only subspecies found in both patients and controls. The load of F. necrophorum DNA on swabs from patients with NST was significantly higher than t

Septic arthritis and osteomyelitis in a bovine digit: a mixed infection of Actinomyces pyogenes and Fusobacterium necrophorum.

A 4-year-old beefmaster cow was examined for a left hind leg lateral claw lameness due to septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint and associated osteomyelitis of the second and third phalanges. Actinomyces pyogenes and Fusobacterium necrophorum, which have been demonstrated previously to act synergistically in ovine heel abscesses, were isolated from the affected digit. A claw amputation was performed because of the advanced destructive nature of the lesion.

Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) indicates herd specificity of Fusobacterium necrophorum ssp. necrophorum isolated from dairy cattle interdigital phlegmon outbreaks in Finland.

Numerous outbreaks of interdigital phlegmon (IP) occurred in Finnish dairy herds country-wide in the 2010s, resulting in significant but varying morbidity and severe clinical signs. These outbreaks increased antibiotic use and caused financial losses on the affected farms. During 2012-2015, we performed a study on the epidemiology, clinical presentation and bacteriology of IP outbreaks on 19 IP-affected farms. In addition, we collected Fusobacterium necrophorum isolates from IP cows for further studies. Here, we present an analysis of 25 isolates from early-stage IP from seven herds representi
