Quantitative analysis of late gadolinium enhancement in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) with the late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) technique allows the detection of myocardial fibrosis in Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The aim of this study was to compare different methods of automatic quantification of LGE in HCM patients. METHODS: Forty HCM patients (mean age 48 y, 30 males) and 20 normal subjects (mean age 38 y, 16 males) underwent CMR, and we compared 3 methods of quantification of LGE: 1) in the SD2 method a region of interest (ROI) was placed within the normal myocardium and enhanced myocardium was considered as havin

Clinical significance of endolymphatic imaging after intratympanic gadolinium injection.

CONCLUSION: Using three-dimensional real inversion recovery (3D-real IR) and three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), various degrees of endolymphatic hydrops were observed in the basal and upper turns of the cochlea and in the vestibular apparatus after intratympanic gadolinium (Gd) injection. MRI may contribute to our understanding of inner ear diseases and may be a useful addition to intratympanic drug therapy in the management of inner ear diseases. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 3D-real IR MRI and 3D-FLAIR MRI with clinical symptoms and s

Diagnosis of Bell palsy with gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging.

Bell palsy is a condition resulting from a peripheral edematous compression on the nervous fibers of the facial nerve. This pathological condition often has clinical characteristics of no importance and spontaneously disappears in a short time in a high percentage of cases. Facial palsy concerning cranial nerve VII can also be caused by other conditions such as mastoid fracture, acoustic neurinoma, tumor spread to the temporal lobe (e.g., cholesteatoma), neoformation of the parotid gland, Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, and Ramsay-Hunt syndrome. Therefore, it is important to adopt an accurate d

Gadolinium-enhanced multidetector CT angiography of the thoracoabdominal aorta.

A 93-year-old patient with a cardiac pacemaker and biochemical renal failure presented with back pain suspicious for dissection. We performed gadolinium-enhanced thoracoabdominal multidetector CT angiography using eight-channel multidetector CT. Uniform aortic enhancement of 140 HU was sufficient to exclude aortic dissection and defined an unruptured infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance dacryocystography in patients with epiphora.

PURPOSE: Digital subtraction dacryocystography (DS-DCG) is considered the "gold standard" in the assessment of the nasolacrimal duct system but fails to delineate the soft tissue structures that surround the lacrimal drainage apparatus. The goal of this study was to compare high resolution MR surface coil imaging with DS-DCG to determine the value of gadolinium-enhanced MR dacryocystography (MR-DCG) in patients with epiphora. METHOD: We performed bilateral MR-DCG and unilateral DS-DCG in 11 patients (aged 3-70 years) with epiphora using Gd-DTPA-containing eyedrops (Magnevist; 78.63 mg of Gd/m

Dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MR findings in infantile hepatic hemangioendothelioma.

We report a case of a 2 1/2-year-old girl presenting with abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and hepatomegaly. In spite of the unusual age at presentation, dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MR findings, which have not been previously illustrated, proved to be highly specific for the diagnosis of infantile hepatic hemangioendothelioma because of the characteristic enhancement pattern.

[Bell's facial paralysis. Study with magnetic resonance and gadolinium].

The facial never was investigated by gadolinium-enhanced MR in 7 patients diagnosed as Bell's Palsy. All cases showed complete facial paralysis, and were studied on the acute phase of the disease. Most Bell's palsy patients demonstrate facial nerve enhancement, usually in the tympanic and labyrinthine segments. No gadolinium enhancement on the opposite facial never was seen in this serie. Because Gad-MR does not appear to influence the therapeutic decision, it may not be necessary in the management of Bell's Palsy.

Gadolinium-enhanced MRI in central nervous system Behçet's disease.

Two cases of central nervous system Behçet's disease, studied by gadolinium-enhanced MRI, are presented. In one patient, whose clinical picture was dominated by a brain syndrome, the gadolinium enhancement resolved with clinical improvement, although the hyperintense areas in the mesencephalon on T2-weighted images persisted. In the second, who had a pseudobulbar palsy and a mild right hemiparesis, there were many abnormal areas, but an enhancing focus in the posterior limb of the left internal capsule was probably the lesion responsible for the hemiparesis.

Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in facial nerve lesions.

We present our 2-year experience with a contrast enhancement agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examining facial nerve pathology. Characteristics of the agent gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid are reviewed. The radiographic capability to differentiate pathologic vs. normal facial nerves based on enhancement and a change in signal intensity generated by the nerve is demonstrated. Experience with facial nerve disorders including Bell's palsy, facial nerve neuromas, a facial nerve graft site, postoperative facial paralysis, and traumatic facial paralysis is presented. The abil

Gadolinium-DTPA-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in optic neuropathies.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), after intravenous administration of the paramagnetic agent gadolinium-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA), showed enhancement of the optic nerve in 7 of 13 patients with acute optic neuritis. Four of these patients had Gd-DTPA enhancement of the intracranial optic nerve and two had involvement of the optic nerve at the orbital apex, ipsilateral to the eye with visual loss. Gadolinium-DTPA enhancement of both intracranial optic nerves was seen in one of two patients with bilateral retrobulbar neuritis. Two patients with acute radiation-induced optic ne

Structure and Magnetocaloric Properties of Two Cadmium Gadolinium Borates.

Two cadmium-gadolinium-borates, CdGdB5O10 and Cd4GdB3O10, were synthesized as polycrystalline samples, and their single crystals were also grown. Monoclinic structures in space groups P21/n and Cm were identified for the two compounds, with magnetic properties characterized through M-T and M-H measurements. The maximum magnetic entropy change (-ΔSMmax) of CdGdB5O10 reaches 23.94 J·kg-1·K-1 at 5 T and 3 K, approaching the value reported for commercial Gd3Ga5O12 under identical conditions. Cd4GdB3O10 exhibits a -ΔSMmax of 13.96 J·kg-1·K-1 at 5 T and 2 K, comparable to Dy3Ga5O12. These two cadmiu

Late Gadolinium Enhancement and Electrocardiographic Associations in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is a well-established indicator of myocardial fibrosis in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, its association with electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities and the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between the presence and burden of LGE with ECG characteristics, including precordial voltage, depolarization and repolarization abnormalities, and the incidence of AF in adults with HCM. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort s

Delayed anaphylaxis due to gadolinium- A rare clinical scenario.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a sudden in onset, diffuse inflammatory form of lung injury which may be associated with a variety of etiologies such as pneumonia, sepsis, aspiration, and severe trauma. Prompt recognition and treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome is critical to reduce the associated high mortality. Severe lung injury presenting as acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to gadolinium contrast media (gadobutrol) is rarely reported. We describe an interesting case of a 47-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with acute respiratory fail

Prognostic Implications of Gadolinium Enhancement of Skull Base Chordomas.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Skull base chordomas often demonstrate variable MR imaging characteristics, and there has been limited prior research investigating the potential clinical relevance of this variability. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the prognostic implications of signal intensity on standard imaging techniques for the biologic behavior of skull base chordomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for 22 patients with pathologically confirmed skull base chordomas. Clinical data were recorded, including the degree of surgical resect

Gadolinium Chloride Rescues Niemann⁻Pick Type C Liver Damage.

Niemann⁻Pick type C (NPC) disease is a rare neurovisceral cholesterol storage disorder that arises from loss of function mutations in the NPC1 or NPC2 genes. Soon after birth, some patients present with an aggressive hepatosplenomegaly and cholestatic signs. Histopathologically, the liver presents with large numbers of foam cells; however, their role in disease pathogenesis has not been explored in depth. Here, we studied the consequences of gadolinium chloride (GdCl₃) treatment, a well-known Kupffer/foam cell inhibitor, at late stages of NPC liver disease and compared it with NPC1 genetic res

Unique Gadolinium Enhancement Pattern in Spinal Dural Arteriovenous Fistulas.

IMPORTANCE: Spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (sDAVF) is often misdiagnosed as an inflammatory or a neoplastic myelopathy, often because of intraparenchymal gadolinium enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); proper early diagnosis is important because deficits are reversible and a delay in treatment is associated with permanent morbidity. Tortuous flow voids on MRI are not universally present; thus, recognition of a unique gadolinium enhancement pattern may also aid in the early recognition and treatment of sDAVF. OBJECTIVE: To describe a unique pattern of spinal cord gadolinium enh

Dark-blood late gadolinium enhancement without additional magnetization preparation.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates a novel dark-blood late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) method, without using additional magnetization preparation, and compares it to conventional bright-blood LGE, for the detection of ischaemic myocardial scar. LGE is able to clearly depict myocardial infarction and macroscopic scarring from viable myocardium. However, due to the bright signal of adjacent left ventricular blood, the apparent volume of scar tissue can be significantly reduced, or even completely obscured. In addition, blood pool signal can mimic sc
