Instrumented Gait Analysis to Identify Persistent Deficits in Gait Stability in Adults With Chronic Vestibular Loss.

IMPORTANCE: Regaining the ability to walk safely is a high priority for adults with vestibular loss. Thus, practitioners need comprehensive knowledge of vestibulopathic gait to design, provide, and/or interpret outcomes of interventions. To date, few studies have characterized the effects of vestibular loss on gait. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the use of an instrumented 2-minute walk test in adults with vestibular loss, to further characterize vestibulopathic gait, and to assess whether those with chronic vestibular loss have enduring gait deficits. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cro

Gait disorders in the elderly and dual task gait analysis: a new approach for identifying motor phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Gait disorders and gait analysis under single and dual-task conditions are topics of great interest, but very few studies have looked for the relevance of gait analysis under dual-task conditions in elderly people on the basis of a clinical approach. METHODS: An observational study including 103 patients (mean age 76.3 ± 7.2, women 56%) suffering from gait disorders or memory impairment was conducted. Gait analysis under dual-task conditions was carried out for all patients. Brain MRI was performed in the absence of contra-indications. Three main gait variables were measured: walk

Leg lengthening as part of gait improvement surgery in cerebral palsy: an evaluation using gait analysis.

Eleven children with hemiplegic or an asymmetric diplegic cerebral palsy who had a preoperative leg length discrepancy of more than 2.5 cm underwent gait improvement surgery which included leg length equalisation. Sagittal plane kinematics and kinetics before and about 3 years after surgery for the lengthened limb and contralateral limb were evaluated. Preoperatively the unaffected limb had excessive stance phase flexion at the hip and knee, and dorsal flexion at the ankle joint. These changes could be partially reversed to produce a kinematic gait pattern comparable to age matched normal cont

Quantitative Analysis of the Gait Variability and Asymmetry Using Inertial Measurement Unit During Dual-task Gait.

Well-established connections exist between increased gait variability and greater fall likelihood in human movement. Therefore, the assessment of gait symmetry can facilitate clinicians' decision-making in the treatment and evaluation of the progression of several diseases. This study proposed a workflow that used two self-developed inertial sensing measurement units (IMU) to collect the lower limb gait data of five subjects and then extracted the gait characteristic parameters to quantify the running process during a single-task condition and a dual-task condition, which requires additional c

Quantification of pathological gait parameter thresholds of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus patients in clinical gait analysis.

The aim of the study was to distinguish the hypokinetic gait disorder in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) patients from the gait decline in the elderly population by quantifying pathological gait parameter thresholds utilizing a multiple condition gait assessment. 55 NPH patients and 55 age-matched healthy subjects underwent a standardized gait assessment with eight gait conditions. Spatiotemporal gait parameters were assessed through a pressure-sensitive carpet. Statistical analysis consisted of a binary logistic regression (BLR) model, logistic curve-fit evaluated by a Chi-squa

Combined robotic-aided gait training and 3D gait analysis provide objective treatment and assessment of gait in children and adolescents with Acquired Hemiplegia.

To evaluate the feasibility of a fully objective rehabilitative and assessment process of the gait abilities in children suffering from Acquired Hemiplegia (AH), we studied the combined employment of robotic-aided gait training (RAGT) and 3D-Gait Analysis (GA). A group of 12 patients with AH underwent 20 sessions of RAGT in addition to traditional manual physical therapy (PT). All the patients were evaluated before and after the training by using the Gross Motor Function Measures (GMFM), the Functional Assessment Questionnaire (FAQ), and the 6 Minutes Walk Test. They also received GA before an

Can Gait Deviations Be Identified through Video-Based Gait Analysis? Validation of the BlazePose Pose Estimation Algorithm.

Accurate identification of gait deviations is critical for effective intervention in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, traditional marker-based gait analysis systems, while highly precise, are costly and impractical for broad clinical applications. Video-based pose estimation algorithms (PEAs) such as BlazePose offer a potential alternative, leveraging standard video inputs to provide scalable and accessible gait assessment. This study assessed the validity of BlazePose in diagnosing gait deviations and analyzing joint kinematics in children with CP, using marker-based motion capture

Gait pattern in myotonic dystrophy (Steinert disease): a kinematic, kinetic and EMG evaluation using 3D gait analysis.

We investigated the gait pattern of 10 patients with myotonic dystrophy (Steinert disease; 4 females, 6 males; age: 41.5+7.6 years), compared to 20 healthy controls, through manual muscle test and gait analysis, in terms of kinematic, kinetic and EMG data. In most of patients (80%) distal muscle groups were weaker than proximal ones. Weakness at lower limbs was in general moderate to severe and MRC values evidenced a significant correlation between tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis (R=0.91). An overall observation of gait pattern in patients when compared to controls showed that mos

Gait analysis of leprosy patients with foot drop using principal component analysis.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury caused by leprosy can lead to foot drop, resulting in an altered gait pattern that has not been previously described using 3D gait analysis. METHODS: Gait kinematics and dynamics were analyzed in 12 patients with unilateral foot drop caused by leprosy and in 15 healthy controls. Biomechanical data from patients' affected and unaffected limbs were compared with controls using inferential statistics and a standard distance, based on principal components analysis (PCA). FINDINGS: Patients walked slower than controls (0.8 ± 0.2 vs. 1.1 ± 0.2 m/s, p = 0.003), w

Frontal plane knee moment in clinical gait analysis: A systematic review on the effect of kinematic gait changes.

INTRODUCTION: The frontal plane knee moment (KAM1 and KAM2) derived from non-invasive three-dimensional gait analysis is a surrogate measure for knee joint load and of great interest in clinical and research settings. Many aspects can influence this measure either unintentionally or purposely in order to reduce the knee joint load to relieve symptoms and pain. All these aspects must be known when conducting a study or interpreting gait data for clinical decision-making. METHODS: This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020187038). Pubmed and Web of Science were searched for p

Gait Velocity Alterations in Essential Tremor: a Meta-Analysis.

Essential tremor (ET) is a prevalent movement disorder that impairs gait function, including gait speed - a critical marker of mobility disability and adverse outcomes. This meta-analysis aimed to quantify differences in gait speed between individuals diagnosed with ET compared to people without a movement disorder diagnosis. Electronic databases were searched for studies comparing gait speed in ET patients and controls. Effect sizes were calculated using standardized mean differences (Hedges' g) and pooled using a random-effects model. Eight studies (390 ET, 227 controls) were included. ET pa

Validation of an Ear-Worn Wearable Gait Analysis Device.

Wearable devices capable of measuring gait parameters may provide a means to more economical gait analysis compared to conventional equipment comprising of a motion capture system and a forced treadmill. Beflex Coach (Beflex, Republic of Korea) is one such device but worn on the ear as Bluetooth earphones, unlike other wearables worn on the wrist, feet, or torso. In this study, the validity of the device was examined against a motion capture system and a forced treadmill for walking and running parameters. Five walking parameters (cadence, single support time, double support time, vertical osc

Gait analysis in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity rodent models.

Gait analysis could be used in animal models as an indicator of sensory ataxia due to chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (CIPN). Over the years, gait analysis in in vivo studies has evolved from simple observations carried out by a trained operator to computerised systems with machine learning that allow the quantification of any variable of interest and the establishment of algorithms for behavioural classification. However, there is not a consensus on gait analysis use in CIPN animal models; therefore, we carried out a systematic review. Of 987 potentially relevant studies, 14 wer

Analysis of cerebral palsy gait based on movement primitives.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy is the most prevalent motor disorder among children. Despite extensive studies on motor modularity of gait of children with cerebral palsy, kinematic modularity of their gait has not been addressed which is the main goal of this study. METHODS: The kinematics of the gait of 13 typical development children and 188 children with cerebral palsy was captured and analyzed, where the cerebral palsy children were grouped into True, Jump, Apparent, and Crouch. Non-negative matrix factorization method was used to extract the kinematic modulus of each group, which were then c

The Open Source GAITOR Suite for Rodent Gait Analysis.

Locomotive changes are often associated with disease or injury, and these changes can be quantified through gait analysis. Gait analysis has been applied to preclinical studies, providing quantitative behavioural assessment with a reasonable clinical analogue. However, available gait analysis technology for small animals is somewhat limited. Furthermore, technological and analytical challenges can limit the effectiveness of preclinical gait analysis. The Gait Analysis Instrumentation and Technology Optimized for Rodents (GAITOR) Suite is designed to increase the accessibility of preclinical ga

Functional gait analysis in a spinal contusion rat model.

Evaluating functional performance of spinal cord injury (SCI) rat models is essential for the development of novel treatments and breakthroughs. However, due to the variety of functional analysis methods available - each with its own strengths and weaknesses - it can be challenging to choose the most appropriate functional analysis test for the animal model. Therefore, we analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of five methods in order to determine which test is not only accurate and easily reproducible, but also relatively inexpensive so that it can be adopted universally. When comparing the Ba
