[The effect of ganglionectomy and cold exposure on the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus, blood glucose and liver glycogen in regard to circadian rhythms].

To analyse the importance of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) for the circadian regulation of the carbohydrate metabolism rats were investigated after bilateral cervical sympathetic ganglionectomy (SCGx) 30 d earlier and exposure to cold (10 degrees C) 72 h earlier. In order to assess the circadian rhythms of nuclear volume oscillations of the VMH, blood glucose, and liver glycogen 4 times a day (light-dark cycle: 14L:10D, light on 05.00 h) rats were sacrificed at midlight and middark as well as 1 h after the onset of the light and dark periods. The circadian curves were calculated

Dorsal Capsular Defect and Synovial Fistula to the Fourth Extensor Compartment: A Late Complication after Arthroscopic Dorsal Wrist Ganglionectomy.

Arthroscopic dorsal wrist ganglionectomy is demonstrably a safe procedure with recurrence rates comparable to open surgery. We present a patient with wrist pain following arthroscopic ganglion excision. MRI and arthroscopic findings showed a large dorsal capsular defect, synovial fistula to the fourth extensor compartment, and dorsal radiocarpal ligament resection. Ligament reconstruction and capsular imbrication resolved her symptoms. We postulate that this complication resulted from a large capsular resection. Because we feel that it can be difficult to judge the size of the debridement thro

Anatomical location of volar wrist ganglion in preoperative MRI is a risk factor for operation-related complications after arthroscopic ganglionectomy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze risk factors of operation-related complications after arthroscopic ganglionectomy in patients with volar wrist ganglions, including patients' demographics and ganglions' anatomical characteristics in MRI. We hypothesized that volar wrist ganglions, either located distal to the bifurcation of the radial artery or superficially expanded, would associate with complications after arthroscopic ganglionectomy. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who had an arthroscopic ganglionectomy for volar wrist ganglion from Mar 2012 to Feb 2022 and follo

Circannual oscillations of thyroxine and cholesterol levels after pinealectomy and ganglionectomy related to the weight changes of the pineal, pituitary, and thyroid glands.

Circannual rhythms of thyroxine (T4) and cholesterol blood levels, as well as of pineal, pituitary and thyroid weights were compared in intact, pinealectomized (Px), and ganglionectomized (Gx) rats. Special emphasis was put on the similarities and differences between the effect of Px and of Gx exerted on the neuroendocrine regulation of thyroid function. Animals were kept under changing lighting schedules simulating the natural seasonal conditions (December, L:D 8:16; June, L:D 16:8; March and September, L:D 12:12). Animals were killed 90 d after surgical interventions in the above-mentioned 4

Alteration in cardiovascular function and body surface temperature during percutaneous stereotactic upper thoracic ganglionectomy and sympathectomy in palmar hyperhidrotic patients.

We assessed changes in cardiovascular function, specifically arterial blood pressure and heart rate in 6 palmar hyperhidrotic patients before, during, and after T2 and T3 ganglionectomy and sympathectomy. We also assessed changes in skin temperature, specifically at the forehead, axilla, thumb, loin, and sole of the foot (all bilaterally) in 10 palmar hyperhidrotic patients before, during, and after T2 ganglionectomy and sympathectomy. In both methods, ganglionectomy and sympathectomy were done by percutaneous stereotactic thermocoagulation, under local anesthesia, at room temperature 21.4 +/-

Pineal melatonin concentrations during day and night in the adult hedgehog: effect of a light pulse at night and superior cervical ganglionectomy.

The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus L.) is a hibernating mammal and seasonal breeder in which numerous circadian and circannual rhythms are entrained and synchronized by photoperiod. The present study was undertaken in order to establish the involvement of the pineal gland in transducing the photoperiodic message in this species. Pineal melatonin concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in female hedgehogs kept under natural climatic conditions and killed during the light:dark (L:D) cycle in spring and autumn, after the interruption of darkness by a 45 min light pulse, and aft

Superior cervical ganglionectomy differentially modifies median eminence and anterior and mediobasal hypothalamic GABA content in male rats: effects of hyperprolactinemia.

This work was undertaken to analyze the changes in GABA concentrations in the anterior and mediobasal hypothalamus and in the median eminence after acute or chronic superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx), and whether high prolactin levels interfere with the effects of SCGx on GABA content. Acute but not chronic SCGx increased GABA content in all the areas studied, as compared to controls. The presence of a pituitary graft abolished the effects of acute SCGx in the median eminence and anterior hypothalamus, as compared to controls, but potentiated its effects in the mediobasal hypothalamus. Chronic trigeminal ganglionectomy or topical capsaicin application to pial vessels attenuates postocclusive cortical hyperemia but does not influence postischemic hypoperfusion.

Marked hyperemia accompanies reperfusion after ischemia in the brain, and may account for the propensity of cerebral hemorrhage to follow embolic stroke or carotid endarterectomy, and for the morbidity that follows head injury or the ligation of large arteriovenous malformations. To evaluate the contribution of trigeminal sensory fibers to the hyperemic response, CBF was determined in 12 symmetrical brain regions, using microspheres with up to five different isotopic labels, in four groups of cats. Measurements were made at 15-min intervals for up to 2 h of reperfusion after global cerebral is

Stellate Ganglion Blockade and Left Cardiac Sympathetic Denervation With Left Stellate Ganglionectomy in a Patient With Refractory Electrical Storm: A Case Report.

Electrical storm (ES) is classified as at least three episodes of ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) in any 24-hour period. Stellate ganglion blockade and left stellate ganglionectomy have shown benefit in terminating ES. A 64-year-old white male with a past medical history of atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease requiring previous cardiac bypass surgery in 1997, and coronary artery stents in 2003 presented with syncope and refractory ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation. He eventually underwent both an ultrasound-guided left stellate ganglion block and left

Superior cervical ganglionectomy suppresses circadian corticotropic rhythms in male rats in the short term (5 days) and long term (10 days).

Superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) has drastic effects on numerous hormonal circadian rhythms and particularly on pineal melatonin secretion. We investigated the hormonal consequences of ablation of the superior cervical ganglion on the corticotropic circadian rhythms in the male rat. Plasma were obtained by sampling blood every 4 h, using a chronic carotid cannula. Adreno-corticotropin hormone (ACTH) was assayed by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and corticosterone (B) by radiocompetition. Urinary 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (aMT6s), considered as an index of the pineal gland activity, was assayed by s

First description of a histopathologic grading system and relationship to outcomes after robotic median arcuate ligament release with celiac ganglionectomy and lymphadenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Two dominating theories regarding median arcuate ligament syndrome include vascular and neurogenic etiologies from celiac artery and ganglion compression, respectively. Celiac ganglionectomy is not routine during surgery, and specimens are rarely excised; therefore, the extent of nerve involvement and histopathology are unknown. Our study aims to characterize histopathologic findings in median arcuate ligament syndrome, establish a histopathologic grading system, and correlate with clinical outcomes. METHODS: Robotic median arcuate ligament release, celiac ganglionectomy, and lymp

Changes in the daily rhythm of serum testosterone levels following superior cervical sympathetic ganglionectomy in the cold-exposed rat: the role of the pineal.

The effect superior cervical sympathetic ganglionectomy (Gx) exerted on the daily rhythm of serum testosterone levels was investigated in cold-exposed rats. Rhythmic changes in pineal and pituitary weights were also measured. 1. Exposure to cold (10 degrees C for 72 h) resulted in a significant decrease of serum testosterone level and in an increase of the pineal weight. 2. In neutral ambient temperature (24 degrees C) Gx, 30 d after operation, led to a moderate, statistically insignificant increase of serum testosterone levels and to decreased pineal weights (statistically significant). 3. Th

Density of peptide histidine-isoleucine- and vasoactive intestinal peptide-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the sheep pineal gland is not affected by superior cervical ganglionectomy.

Peptide histidine-isoleucine (PHI) is a regulatory peptide, synthesized as part of the same propeptide that includes also vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). The present study describes the distribution of PHI-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the sheep pineal organ and compares their location with the distribution of VIP-immunoreactive fibers in both normal and superior cervical ganglionectomized sheep in order to elucidate the origin of the PHI/VIP immunoreactive nerve fibers. Several PHI-immunoreactive nerve fibers were present in the meninges and in the pineal capsule. Numerous positive nerv

Pineal-induced alterations in reproductive function and pituitary prolactin in the female rat: the effects of bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy and nervi conarii transection.

The reproductive organs of female rats subjected to blinding and and anosmia were hypotrophic while pituitary prolactin stores were markedly depressed in these animals. All of the effects of dual sensory deprivation were reversed by either superior cervical ganglionectomy or nervi conarii transection. It was concluded that both of these surgical procedures were as effective as pinealectomy in reversing the pineal-induced alterations in the reproductive physiology of the blind-anosmic female rat.

Effect of pinealectomy, superior cervical ganglionectomy, or melatonin treatment on 24-hour rhythms in ornithine decarboxylase and tyrosine hydroxylase activities of rat spleen.

Diurnal variations in splenic ornithine decarboxylase and tyrosine hydroxylase activities were examined in rats subjected to pinealectomy, bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy, or their respective sham operations. Rats were treated with Freund's complete adjuvant or its vehicle 2 days before sacrifice. After immunization, splenic ornithine decarboxylase activity was augmented 5-6-fold. In both immunized and nonimmunized sham-operated rats, significant diurnal variations in ornithine decarboxylase activity were detectable, with a maximum at early morning, acrophases after Cosinor analysis
