CASE REPORT: An 18 mth old boy was sent to the Emergency Room of the Jessa Hospital (Hasselt, Belgium) because of persistent vomiting. The clinical examination was without particularities, except for a runny nose. The diagnosis of indigestion or (viral) gastritis was made. Patient was sent home. He was represented at the ER five days later. He stopped vomiting for 3 consecutive days after his first hospital visit, but started to vomit again the last 2 days, the last night even two times with bilious vomiting. His appetite was decreased since one week. The infant was not comfortable during abdo

INTRODUCTION: Gastric perforation is a common general surgical emergency. Ischaemia of the stomach is uncommon due to its rich vascular supply, and is an uncommon cause of perforation. Minimal literature is available on the topic of ischaemic gastritis, with the few cases available linked to gastric dilation.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 52 year old lady presents with a syncopal episode, nausea, vomiting, malaise, and abdominal discomfort. A chest X-ray identified free subdiaphragmatic gas, and her examination revealed a peritonitic abdomen, prompting urgent surgical intervention. She was found to

OBJECTIVE: To describe the presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of a case of emphysematous gastritis (EG) in a cat.
CASE SERIES SUMMARY: A 15-year-old female neutered domestic short-hair cat presented for a 4-month history of weight loss and intermittent vomiting. Clinicopathologic and imaging findings suggested an underlying primary gastrointestinal (GI) disease, as well as possible hepatobiliary disease. Two days following exploratory laparotomy to obtain GI and liver biopsies, the patient became septic and intracellular bacteria were present on cytology of peritoneal effusion. O

Scientific review and own data about chronic gastritis problem: prevalence, short history data, question of aetiology and pathogenesis, clinical features, methods of instrumental and laboratory diagnostics including developed by the author, interrelation between chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer, gastric cancer and functional gastric dyspepsia syndrome are represented. Issues of chronic gastritis classification, principles of treatment and its efficiency are shown.

BACKGROUND: Active gastritis, atrophic gastritis (AG) and intestinal metaplasia are lesions associated with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in adults.
AIM: To assess the prevalence of chronic gastritis, its histological characteristics and clinical features in children.
METHODS: 345 children (M/F: 151/194, mean age: 8.6 +/- 3.7 years; range: 1-18 years) were enrolled, referred for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGI endo) with clinical manifestations of gastritis, i.e., recurrent abdominal pain (n = 232, 67.2%), upper gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 59, 17.1%) and miscellaneous (n

Chronic gastritis is a multifactorial disorder thought to be influenced by bacterial and host genetic factors. Histopathological examination is the mainstay of diagnosis, however features like the presence of Helicobacter pylori are difficult to evaluate on biopsy. We evaluated 120 gastric antral biopsies using the revised Sydney system. The density of the inflammatory infiltrate, H pylori and mast cells were evaluated. It was seen that the presence of H pylori is strongly associated with an acute and a chronic inflammatory infiltrate. The presence of neutrophils on biopsy is strongly associat

H2-receptor antagonists are widely used in the treatment of diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, hemorrhage of the upper digestive tract, and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. However, the usefulness of H2-receptor antagonists in treating erosions and/or mucosal hemorrhages has not been established. A multicenter, double-blind, comparative trial was conducted to determine the effects of famotidine, a new H2-receptor antagonist, for such lesions. Patients received one of three oral doses (5, 10, or 20 mg) of famotidine twice daily for 2 weeks. The comparative efficacy and safety of the t

The histological pattern of fundic and antral mucosa was evaluated in endoscopically bioptic material obtained from 32 dyspeptic patients in the absence of circumscribed lesions of the stomach, duodenum, hepato-biliary area and pancreas, and in 30 asymptomatic controls. The data obtained failed to reveal any significant differences between the dyspeptic patients and the asymptomatic control group as regards the presence of chronic inflammatory alterations of the fundic or antral mucosa. Furthermore, the present findings reconfirmed the well-known progression with age, of the gastric inflammato

The objective of the paper is the specification of morphological criteria for the diagnostics of chronic gastritis. Biopsies, taken from the antral and corporal mucosa of 317 patients, were studied. Light chronic superficial gastritis was established in 184 cases. Manifested chronic superficial gastritis--in 178 cases, 119 of them in the antrum. Chronic gastritis with initial atrophy of the glands was established in II cases, and complete--in one. Chronic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia was observed in the antral mucosa mainly, and with various degrees of glandular atrophy both in case of

The question which is the title of this paper may also be formulated: "What types of gastritis are of clinical relevance?" The question may be answered as follows: 1. Type I, the gastritis constellation in pernicious anemia. 2. Type II, severe antrum gastritis which tends to expand into the cardia region. Stomach ulcers are often preceded; and their localization is determined by this type. 3. Chronic atrophic gastritis of the corpus mucosa as is found in the constellation of pernicious anemia may also be a pathogenic factor in the development of stomach cancer. 4. The chronic atrophic gastriti

Despite the high incidence and the increasing frequency gastritis is a true pathological process of the gastric mucosa. The importance of gastritis is not due to the symptoms but due to the altered reagibility of the stomach mucosa against exogenous and endogenous noxes. Two different forms fo chronic atrophic gastritis are to be distinguish concerning localization and etiology. Type A possibly is caused by an immunological process and is localized in the corpus mucosa. The more frequent typ B is localized in the antral mucosa and may be caused by exogen factors. None of these different forms

INTRODUCTION: Many clinicians consider chronic gastritis to be equivalent to Helicobacter pylori infection. However, it is known that there are numerous other causes of the condition.
AIM: Determination of the incidence of gastritis in patients with dyspepsia referred for diagnostic endoscopy of the upper part of the digestive tract, identification of the parts of the stomach most frequently affected by the inflammation, as well as the impact of an insufficient number of collected samples on the correct diagnosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy due to dyspepsia was pe

OBJECTIVES: Autoimmune gastritis may be associated with other organ-specific autoimmune disorders, but the prevalence of this association is not entirely quantified. The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence of autoimmune disorders and evaluate the factors that might affect this association in patients with autoimmune gastritis.
METHODS: A total of 320 patients with autoimmune gastritis were retrospectively studied and data on concomitant autoimmune diseases, serum gastrin and chromogranin A levels, anti-Hp IgG, antiparietal cell antibodies, presence of enterochromaffin-like c
