BACKGROUND: We sought to estimate the prevalence and describe heterogeneity in experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) across subgroups of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).
METHODS: We used data from a cross-sectional bio-behavioural survey among 1299 AGYW aged 14-24 in Mombasa, Kenya in 2015. Respondents were recruited from hotspots associated with sex work, and self-selected into one of three subgroups: young women engaged in casual sex (YCS), young women engaged in transactional sex (YTS), and young women engaged in sex work (YSW). We compared overall and across subgroups: preval

Little is known about adolescent exposure to and factors associated with violence in Malawi. The aim of this research was to describe the prevalence of exposure to violence among adolescents in Malawi, and test the hypotheses that such exposures are associated with gender-based violent attitudes, and with internalizing and externalizing problems. In 2014, 561 primary school pupils were interviewed (50% girls), and logistic regression analysis was performed on gender-stratified data, adjusting for sociodemographic differences. Both girls and boys had witnessed domestic violence (28.5% & 29.6%),

Gender based violence (GBV) negatively impacts on women's reproductive health (R.H) and is contrary to human rights and RH statutory instruments. The study triangulates quantitative and qualitative research methods with women in the reproductive age group being the target group. The study noted that 95% of the respondents experienced physical violence, 31% rape by a stranger, 92% spousal rape and 65% forced marriages. Socio-cultural, religious, economic and policy implementation factors underlie a culture of silence that prevails among the victims of GBV. The study recommends economic empowerm

BACKGROUND: Rising contamination of illicitly-manufactured benzodiazepines in unregulated opioids in Canada poses concern as their strong sedative effects may increase vulnerability to violence for people who use drugs (PWUD), particularly women. The current study longitudinally examined the relationship between suspected exposure to benzodiazepines (SEB) and violent victimization, assessing for gender differences.
METHODS: Data were drawn from 1049 participants (40.9 % women) from three harmonized prospective cohorts of community-recruited PWUD in Vancouver, Canada between 2021 and 2023. We

Workplace violence (WPV) impacts all levels of the health workforce, including the individual provider, organization, and society. While there is a substantial body of literature on various aspects of WPV against the health workforce, gender-based WPV (GB-WPV) has received less attention. Violence in both the workplace and broader society is rooted in gendered socio-economic, cultural, and institutional factors. Developing a robust understanding of GB-WPV is crucial to explore the differing experiences, responses, and outcomes of GB-WPV with respect to gender. We conducted a scoping review and

Conflict settings are often the context of some of the highest rates of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Although women are disproportionately the victims of SGBV, they are not the only victims. Indirect impacts of SGBV also impact men, families, and communities. Examining SGBV as only a woman's concern reinforces the hegemonic gender-binary view that SGBV somehow does not include men, who can be direct victims of SGBV, family members of female victims of SGBV, and/or perpetrators of SGBV. This qualitative study seeks to fill a gap by exploring the impact of SGBV on individuals, famili

BACKGROUND: Women living in Ohio Appalachia experience cervical cancer at disproportionately high rates. Intimate partner and sexual gender-based violence (GBV) and smoking are independent risk factors for cervical cancer and interact to heighten risk. Appalachian women smoke at higher rates than other Ohio women, but little is known about GBV exposure in the region. The purpose of this study was to establish prevalence of women's exposure to GBV in Ohio Appalachia and examine the association between GBV and smoking among women in the region.
METHODS: A two-phase address-based random sampling

In 2017, the #MeToo movement garnered international attention when millions of people used the hashtag to share personal experiences of sexual violence. The present study examines how noncelebrity users discussed their experiences of sexual victimization through a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of a random sample of #MeToo tweets (N = 1,427). We found that survivors prioritized details about the "who," "what," "where," "when," "why," and "how" of trauma in their disclosures. Key themes in their responses included child sexual abuse (22.7%), long-term adverse effects (17.6%), and

BACKGROUND: Many people experience forms of gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in the context of their work. This includes a wide range of experiences, from subtle expressions of hostility to physical assault, that can also be of a sexual nature (e.g., sexual harassment or assault). This systematic review aimed to summarize findings about the prospective associations of work-related GBVH with people's health and occupational situation.
METHODS: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE and PsycINFO w

This article reports the findings from a new form of review: a focused mapping review and synthesis. The aim was to create a contemporary, snapshot profile of the nature and scope of gender-based violence (GBV) studies conducted in Europe. GBV is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world affecting mainly women and girls. The policy context of GBV in Europe has gathered momentum in recent years, but we do not have a clear picture of how this relates to research activity. Thirteen journals were purposively selected on their likelihood to publish GBV research. All articles pu

Gender-based violence in high schools undermines adolescents' rights, well-being and opportunities at a critical moment in their psycho-social development. While violence prevalence has been partially assessed in sub-Saharan Africa, there remain gaps in understanding how adolescents themselves define, interpret and navigate these situations. This phenomenological qualitative study conducted in four high schools in Kinshasa (DR Congo) centres adolescent voices to explore how they perceive, legitimise, and manage school-based gender-based violence. It aims to identify the individual beliefs and

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) in dating relationships is an escalating public health concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults. University settings, and specifically nursing programmes, are key environments for early detection and prevention. As future frontline health professionals, nursing students must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify and respond effectively to intimate partner violence.
METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study involved a purposive sample of 24 undergraduate nursing students aged 18 to 24 years; all enrolled in universities

BACKGROUND: Transgender women are disproportionately affected by both HIV and gender-based violence (GBV), defined as physical, sexual, or emotional violence perpetrated against an individual based on their gender identity/expression. While a growing body of evidence demonstrates that GBV leads to poor HIV care and treatment outcomes among cisgender women, less research has examined this association among transgender women. We assessed the impact of lifetime experiences of GBV on subsequent retention in HIV care and laboratory confirmed viral suppression among a sample of transgender women liv

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls, is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. Somalia is one of the leading countries in human rights violations and has one of the highest rates of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) worldwide. Such violence is more prevalent among women and girls in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps who lack livelihood and civil protections. Therefore, this study was designed to identify the prevalence and the determinants of gender-based violence in IDP camps in Deynile district, Somalia.
METHODS: This is a cro

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in war-affected zones is a pressing public health issue, as these individuals often endure compounded trauma from both the violence they experience and the broader context of conflict. Post-traumatic stress disorders are overlooked in Ethiopian society, despite the country having the greatest number of victims of violence and its detrimental effects on mental health. This study aimed to explore Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Survivors attending one

This study examines the coping strategies used by refugee women who have survived gender-based violence (GBV) across multiple stages of migration. Drawing on interviews with 50 urban refugee women in Nairobi, Kenya, the study explores how coping processes shift or remain consistent throughout the migration trajectory using the migration process framework. Although GBV is widespread among forcibly displaced women globally, limited research has investigated how survivors appraise and manage the stress of these experiences over time and within changing displacement contexts. Guided by Lazarus and
