Microbial drug resistance (Larchmont, N.Y.)2013eng
Salmonella enterica is a prevalent foodborne pathogen that can carry multidrug resistance (MDR) and pose a threat to human health. Identifying the genetics associated with MDR in Salmonella isolated from animals, foods, and humans can help determine sources of MDR in food animals and their impact on humans. S. enterica serovars most frequently carrying MDR from healthy animals, retail meats, and human infections in the United States and Canada were identified and isolates resistant to the largest number of antimicrobials were chosen. Isolates were from U.S. slaughter (n=12), retail (9), and hu

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a serious public health threat with a sharply increasing burden globally. Resource limited countries like Nepal are facing difficulties in the fight against AMR. This has been further worsened due to the lack of adequate molecular data. Ciprofloxacin resistance by AcrAB-TolC efflux pump (EP) genes in Gram-negative bacteria becomes a challenging issue due to its potential role in multidrug resistance (MDR). This hospital-based cross-sectional study investigated these genes in ciprofloxacin-resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumo

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The frequencies of non-susceptibility against common antibiotics among pneumococci vary greatly across the globe. When compared to other European countries antibiotic resistance against penicillin and macrolides has been uncommon in Sweden in recent years. Multidrug resistance (MDR) is, however, of high importance since relevant treatment options are scarce. The purpose of this study was to characterize the molecular epidemiology, presence of resistance genes and selected virulence genes of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) (n=15) and MDR (n=10) Streptococcus pneumoniae de

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) plasmids play an important role in disseminating antimicrobial resistance genes. To elucidate the antimicrobial resistance gene compositions in A/C incompatibility complex (IncA/C) plasmids carried by animal-derived MDR Salmonella Newport, and to investigate the spread mechanism of IncA/C plasmids, this study characterizes the complete nucleotide sequences of IncA/C plasmids by comparative analysis. Complete nucleotide sequencing of plasmids and chromosomes of six MDR Salmonella Newport strains was performed using PacBio RSII. Open reading frames were assigned using p

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae strains are the major cause of liver abscesses throughout East Asia, and these strains are usually antibiotic susceptible. Recently, multidrug-resistant and hypervirulent (MDR-HV) K. pneumoniae strains have emerged due to hypervirulent strains acquiring antimicrobial resistance determinants or the transfer of a virulence plasmid into a classic MDR strain. In this study, we characterized the clinical and microbiological properties of K. pneumoniae liver abscess (KPLA) caused by MDR-HV strains in Taiwan. Patients with community onset KPLA were retrospectively

This study assessed antimicrobial susceptibility, biofilm formation, hypervirulence traits, and virulence-related genes in K. pneumoniae. 119 isolates underwent antibiotic susceptibility testing using the Kirby-Bauer method, biofilm assessment through Congo red agar and Microtiter plate assays, PCR for various genes, and the String test for hypermucoviscosity. Clinical characteristics and virulence factors of hypervirulent (hvKP) were compared to classic K. pneumoniae (cKP) strains. Among the isolates, 77.3% were multi-drug resistant (MDR), and 83.2% showed biofilm-forming ability, with a high

The present work aimed to evaluate the expression profile of genes related to stem cells (SC) characteristics during the acquisition of the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype in the chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). For this, the K562 (non MDR) and FEPS (MDR) cell lines were used. K562 cells had resistance induced by exposure to daunorubicin (DNR), and induction was confirmed by flow cytometry with an increase in ABCB1 expression in K562 cells treated at the highest concentration. Real-time PCR gene expression analysis showed a direct relationship in the expression of OCT4 and ABCB1 genes, wit

The multidrug resistance (mdr) gene family has been shown to encode a membrane glycoprotein, termed the P-glycoprotein, which functions as a drug efflux pump with broad substrate specificity. This multigene family is expressed in a tissue-specific fashion in a wide variety of normal and neoplastic tissues. The regulation of mdr gene expression in normal tissues is not understood. We have recently shown that mdr mRNA and the P-glycoprotein increases dramatically in the secretory luminal and glandular epithelium of the gravid murine uterus. This observation has suggested that mdr gene expression

Multidrug-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (MDR-hvKP) combines high pathogenicity with multidrug resistance to become a new superbug. MDR-hvKP reports continue to emerge, shattering the perception that hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKP) strains are antibiotic sensitive. Patients infected with MDR-hvKP strains have been reported in Asia, particularly China. Although hvKP can acquire drug resistance genes, MDR-hvKP seems to be more easily transformed from classical K. pneumoniae (cKP), which has a strong gene uptake ability. To better understand the biology of MDR-hvKP, this review

Antibiotics are used to treat severe bacterial infections. However, owing to excessive antibiotic use, bacteria under high selective pressure for antibiotics develop resistance through spontaneous mutation or by acquiring antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) through horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Horizontal transfer of ARGs among bacteria in the environment can lead to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria that infect animals and humans, thus causing disease outbreaks. In this study, MDR strain FN1 was isolated from a feces-contaminated soil sample from a chicken farm under pressu

The recent emergence of azithromycin-resistant extensively drug-resistant (AziR-XDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) in Taiwan poses a significant public health concern. To investigate the genetic basis and the evolutionary dynamics, we analyzed 60 isolates collected between 2007 and 2024, comprising multidrug-resistant (MDR, n = 45) and AziR-XDR (n = 15) isolates from human and animal sources. Whole-genome sequencing analysis revealed that 36 of 45 MDR isolates and all AziR-XDR isolates belonged to the HC50_13 subclone (differing by ≤ 50 core genes) and clustered with

Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the most important pathogens related to hospital-acquired infections. The incidence of infections by hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKp), especially community-acquired infections, has been increasing in recent decades. The occurrence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) hvKp has been increasingly reported worldwide decreasing the treatment options, which is a concern. Aquatic environments have been considered a reservoir of MDR pathogens, which contribute to the spread of MDR pathogens. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize MDR-hvKp strains obtained from public aqu

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is widely recognized as one of the primary opportunistic pathogens responsible for a wide range of nosocomial infections, notably in immunocompromised patients. Antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation, as two major virulence factors of P. aeruginosa, are related to the persistence of prolonged infections. This study was designed to (1) evaluate the frequency of multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa in northern Iran and (2) analyze the frequency of biofilm-associated genes and their correlation with antimicrobial patterns. Clinical samples (n = 80) were collected fr

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are broad-spectrum antibiotics recommended for the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients. FQ resistance, caused by mutations in the gyrA and gyrB genes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is increasingly reported worldwide; however, information on mutations occurring in strains from the Indian subcontinent is scarce. Hence, in this study, we aimed to characterize mutations in the gyrA and gyrB genes of acid-fast bacillus (AFB) smear-positive sediments or of M. tuberculosis isolates from AFB smear-negative samples from patients in India suspected of h
