To create a model by noninvasive means for the study of Wallerian and transneuronal degeneration of the central nervous system, we devised a two-step argon laser photocoagulation (ALP) procedure with which we could selectively injure the optic nerve in rats. Changes in the optic nerve distal to the site of injury were studied histologically to evaluate this method; we succeeded in selectively and completely injuring the optic nerve. Neocortical layer 6 (L6) is less understood than other more superficial layers, largely owing to limitations of performing high-resolution investigations in vivo. Here, we show that labeling with the Challenge Virus Standard (CVS) rabies virus strain enables high-quality imaging of L6 neurons by conventional two-photon microscopes. CASE REPORT: We examined a unique case of stroke in a 29-year-old woman. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed isolated bilateral acute infarctions of the lateral geniculate bodies (LGB). Visual field testing demonstrated incongruous but homonymous bilateral visual field loss in a bow-tie configuration.

PURPOSE: We examined a 28-year-old woman who developed incongruous binasal and bitemporal visual field defects one week after having a febrile gastroenteritis characterized by severe diarrhea while traveling in Mexico.
METHODS: The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone sodium succinate, 1 g daily for three days, followed by an eight-week course of oral prednisone.
RESULTS: Neuroradiologic examination demonstrated bilaterally increased signal intensity within the lateral geniculate bodies. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis disclosed isolated protein increase.
CONCLUSION: Severe

A number of authors have made the claim that dyslexia is the result of a deficit in the magnocellular part of the visual system. Morphological and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) immunocytochemical properties of the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate nucleus were investigated in reptiles, Caiman crocodilus. GAD immunoreactive neurons, although sparse, were found in the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate nucleus. In addition, puncta and fibers immunoreactive for GAD were also observed in this same nucleus. These results in Caiman utilizing GAD are similar to observations on the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate nucleus of other reptiles in which antisera to gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) were used.
