"How can I seek a consultation if I don't have a high fever ?": Barriers to Mental Healthcare Access for Women in the Perinatal Period in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Literature highlights barriers to mental healthcare access in the perinatal period, but none specific to Rwanda. The unique historical context of the genocide against the Tutsi may present distinct challenges. This study aimed to identify these barriers in Rwanda. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative interpretive descriptive approach as part of a multimethod investigation. Four focus group discussions were conducted with 31 perinatal women, and 32 individual interviews were conducted with healthcare providers, including community health workers. Data were analysed thematical

Auditory Hallucination Among Traumatized Cambodian Refugees: PTSD Association and Biocultural Shaping.

At a psychiatric refugee clinic for survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide, a survey revealed that 42% (38/90) had auditory hallucinations (AHs) in the last month. Of those with AHs, 87% (33/38) had PTSD, whereas of those without AHs, 31% (16/52) had PTSD, giving a chi square of 27.8, p < .001, odds ratio 14.8 (4.8-45). Most AHs were of a "ghost summoning" (khmaoch hao), considered an exhortation to go with a ghost (e.g., hearing "Please come with me, younger sister"), experienced by 73% percent of patients with AHs. The voices were always exterior and usually loud and clear. AHs were heard mos

Quality of the relationship between origin of childhood perception of attachment and outcome of attachment associated with diagnosis of PTSD in adult Finnish war children and Finnish combat veterans from World War II (1939-1945) - DSM-IV applications of the attachment theory.

BACKGROUND: Using diagnoses exclusively, comparable evaluations of the empirical evidence relevant to the content can be made. The term holocaust survivor syndrome according to the DSM-IV classification encompasses people with diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorders and psychopathological symptoms exposed to the Nazi genocide from 1933-1945 identified by Natan Kellermann, AMCHA, Israel (1999). METHODS: The relationships between disorders of affectionate parenting and the development of dysfunctional models on one hand, and various psychopathological disorders on the other hand were invest

The dark side of anatomical illustration: should we still be utilising artistic depictions of cadavers from unethical or unknown sources? A UK perspective.

The history of anatomical illustration is deeply entangled with unethical and, at times, illegal practices shaped by the politics of death and bodily autonomy. While anatomical images remain central to education, research, and patient communication, the individuals whose bodies were rendered into these illustrations have rarely been acknowledged. Historically, anatomists relied on bodies from executions, prisons, workhouses, and grave robbing. Legislation such as the Murder Act of 1752 and the Anatomy Act of 1832 disproportionately targeted marginalised populations, many of whom did not consen

The changing face of hunger: from fasting to the concept of atherogenesis.

The history of hunger is a story about natural disasters and wars, but, on the other hand, also about the investigation of evolutionary defense mechanisms concerning quantitative food shortages. The article presents how fasting and the experimental starving oriented the development of physiology, and it is based on a comparative analysis of monographs and articles on starvation in the medical context from library collections and the PubMed database. Over the centuries, doctors have believed that fasting has a beneficial effect on health, and they recommended a restrictive diet during an illnes

HIV-related 'conspiracy beliefs': lived experiences of racism and socio-economic exclusion among people living with HIV in New York City.

HIV-related 'conspiracy beliefs' include ideas about the genocidal origin of HIV and the nature and purpose of HIV-related medications. These ideas have been widely documented as affecting myriad health behaviours and outcomes, including birth control use and HIV testing. Most HIV-related research has quantitatively explored this phenomenon, and further qualitative research is necessary to better understand the complexity of these beliefs as articulated by those who endorse them. Moreover, public health in general has over-emphasised the role of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study in explaining mistru

[Evaluation of injuries by means of photographs in a homicide (manslaughter or murder) barred by the statute of limitations].

Pursuant to Section 78 German Criminal Code, criminal offences under Section 220a (genocide) and Section 211 (murder) are not subject to a statute of limitations. To the extent that prosecution is subject to a statute of limitations, the period of limitation is thirty years in the case of acts punishable by imprisonment for life. After the expiration of the period of limitation, evidence and investigation records relevant for the offence may no longer be available. Once a homicide is statute-barred, main proceedings may be opened only, if the elements of murder are present. The problems arisin

The clinicide phenomenon: an exploration of medical murder.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to explore the phenomenon of clinicide. CONCLUSIONS: The study of medical killers is barely in its infancy. Clinicide is the unnatural death of multiple patients in the course of treatment by a doctor. Serial medical killing is a relatively new phenomenon. The role model is Dr Marcel Petiot, the worst serial killer in French history. More recently, Dr Harold Shipman was Britain's worst serial killer and in the United States and Zimbabwe, Dr Michael Swango killed 60 patients. A number of doctors have such high patient death rates that it cannot be ignored. A

"Kusa Ikivi": Death as an Accomplishment and End-of-Life Experience of Cancer Patients in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: In present-day Rwanda, despite efforts of the Ministry of Health to implement palliative care, end-of-life care, and death are seldom discussed, and many patients die suffering or alone. OBJECTIVES: We qualitatively studied end-of-life traditions and attitudes toward end-of-life care in present-day Rwanda that might inform optimization of palliative and end-of-life care. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with 29 key informants that were audio recorded, transcribed, translated from Kinyarwanda to English, and analyzed. We also observed patients, family members, and care

Effectiveness of Community-based Approach in Reducing the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Exposure and Outcome: A Randomised Controlled Trial of IPV Victimisation and Perpetration in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the effectiveness of the Community-Based Approach (CBA) on the reduction of intimate partner violence (IPV) exposure and its outcomes in Rwanda. This study, therefore, aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the Community-Based Approach (CBA) for IPV victimisation and perpetration as well as its associated mental health outcomes in Rwanda. METHODS: A randomised controlled trial was conducted on a sample of 32 couples, with 17 couples assigned in treatment group and 15 assigned in control group. Challenges to Adolescent Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake: an Exploration of Black and Latino American Parents' Beliefs, Attitudes, and Receptivity to PrEP.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among adolescents has been slow. This has been attributed to factors such as stigma, lack of PrEP awareness, financial burdens, and provider apprehension about prescribing PrEP. In this study, we sought to understand the impact of familial factors on PrEP uptake among youth. METHODS: We conducted three focus groups with parents of Black and Latino adolescents to gather insights about attitudes, beliefs and receptivity to PrEP uptake among adolescents. Parents were recruited through a teen health clinic in New York City. Data were transcribed,

Arts as a resource in global mental health: a mixed-methods exploratory study of therapeutic arts, photography and cultural archiving with formerly captured Yazidi women.

OBJECTIVES: The 2014 genocide perpetrated by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) against the Yazidi community resulted in widespread psychological trauma, mass displacement and targeted destruction of cultural heritage. This exploratory study examined a therapeutic arts and photography intervention with formerly captured Yazidi women, alongside the participatory development of a cultural archive, as an integrated approach to supporting mental health, cultural resilience and survivor authorship in a postconflict setting. DESIGN: Mixed-methods exploratory study using a pre-post quantitative

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: The Influence of the Environmental Context and Analysis of Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory and Glycemic Markers in Women Living in Kurdistan Regional Government-Iraq.

Background Internally displaced persons (IDP) camps are still home to a large number of female survivors of the Yazidi genocide carried out in Iraq in 2014 by the Islamic organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Many of these women suffer from a persistent form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can last for many years. On the other hand, little is known about the intricate etiology of PTSD. Objectives In this observational cross-sectional study, the biochemical parameters, including inflammatory and oxidative stress (OXS) markers, were evaluated in two gr

Mothers' psychopathology and their adult offspring's cortisol level in a Rwandan sample.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on the influence of mothers' trauma-related psychopathology on their offspring's hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning have been conducted in Western contexts. Furthermore, those studies have focused on the association between mothers' post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their offspring's HPA axis functioning. More research is needed among African populations exposed to mass violence to mitigate the intergenerational transmission of trauma. AIM: To investigate the link between mothers' PTSD and depression and their offspring's basal cortisol leve

A Community-Defined Approach to Address Trauma Among Cambodian Immigrants and Refugees.

Asian American and Pacific Islanders are one of the fastest growing and most diverse groups in the United States. Yet, they are often aggregated as a single group, masking within-group differences in rates of disease and demographic characteristics commonly associated with elevated health risk. While more than four decades have passed since the Khmer Rouge genocide, Cambodians continue to experience trauma-related psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder and major depression. Decolonizing prisons: Indigenized programming and a critique of critical prison studies.

Critical prison studies (CPS) is increasingly influential in scholarly discussions about decolonizing prisons. Proponents of CPS largely oppose the idea that cultural prison programs are decolonial, which include courses teaching Indigenous cultures and colonial history, prisons facilitating spirituality, involving Elders and communities in rehabilitation, and specialized prisons called "healing lodges." Most CPS scholars writing on the topic disparage these initiatives as assimilationist and thus a weapon of cultural genocide. For these scholars, decolonizing prisons is impossible. CPS argume

Does early life trauma affect how depression is experienced by Holocaust survivors in late life?

OBJECTIVES: Existing research indicates that early life trauma increases the likelihood of depression in later life. This includes children who survived the Nazi Holocaust living in Israel today. For this study, we set out to examine whether early life trauma affects both levels of depression symptomatology and the relative prominence of certain facets of depression as compared to other older adults in Israel and Canada. METHOD: For this study we recruited 295 Holocaust survivors (HS), 205 other Israelis and 335 older Canadians each of whom completed Radloff's (1977) Center for Epidemiologica
