Environmental changes, disease ecology and geographic information system-based tools for risk assessment.

In recent years, several vector-borne, parasitic or zoonotic diseases have emerged or re-emerged in different parts of the world, with major public health, socio-economic and political consequences. Emergence of these diseases is linked to climatic change, human-induced landscape changes and human activities that have affected disease ecology. The authors illustrate geographic information system-based approaches to understand epidemiological processes and predict disease patterns. Continent-wide approaches are used to explore vector and host distributions and identify areas where substantial c

Validation of a geographic information system model for mapping the risk of fasciolosis in cattle and buffaloes in Cambodia.

Maps showing gradations of risk of fasciolosis due to Fasciola gigantica in Cambodia were produced using geographic information systems (GIS) technology in conjunction with determinants of fasciolosis. A comparison between levels of risk predicted by the maps and field measurements of prevalence in 11 provinces (n=1406) showed general agreement, which suggested the epidemiological determinants and weightings used to produce the maps were appropriate. However, due to logistical constraints, prevalence was measured at the provincial level and animals were not randomly sampled (and thus were unli

The potential of geographical information systems and remote sensing in the epidemiology and control of human helminth infections.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies are being used increasingly to study the spatial and temporal patterns of infectious diseases. For helminth infections, however, such applications have only recently begun despite the recognition that infection distribution patterns in endemic areas may have profound effects on parasite population dynamics and therefore the design and implementation of successful control programmes. Here, we review the early applications of these technologies to the major human helminths (geohelminths, schistosomes and the major lymphati

A Geographic Information System Approach to Map Tick Exposure Risk at a Scale for Public Health Intervention.

Tick-borne disease control and prevention have been largely ineffective compared to the control of other vector-borne diseases. Although control strategies exist, they are costly or ineffective at large spatial scales. We need tools to target these strategies to places of highest tick exposure risk. Here we present a geographic information system (GIS) method for mapping predicted tick exposure risk at a 200 m by 200 m resolution, appropriate for public health intervention. We followed the approach used to map tick habitat suitability over large areas. We used drag-cloth sampling to measure th

Emergency Care Sensitive Conditions in Brazil: A Geographic Information System Approach to Timely Hospital Access.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of treatment for many conditions are time dependent. The burden of these emergency care sensitive conditions (ECSCs) is especially high in low- and middle-income countries. Our objective was to analyze geospatial trends in ECSCs and characterize regional disparities in access to emergency care in Brazil. METHODS: From publicly available datasets, we extracted data on patients assigned an ECSC-related ICD-10 code and on the country's emergency facilities from 2015-2019. Using ArcGIS, OpenStreetMap, and WorldPop, we created catchment areas corresponding to 180 minutes o

Accuracy of two geocoding methods for geographic information system-based exposure assessment in epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposure assessment based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and study participants' residential proximity to environmental exposure sources relies on the positional accuracy of subjects' residences to avoid misclassification bias. Our study compared the positional accuracy of two automatic geocoding methods to a manual reference method. METHODS: We geocoded 4,247 address records representing the residential history (1990-2008) of 1,685 women from the French national E3N cohort living in the Rhône-Alpes region. We compared two automatic geocoding methods, a free

Geographical Information Systems risk assessment models for zoonotic fascioliasis in the South American Andes region.

The WHO recognises Fasciola hepatica to be an important human health problem. The Andean countries of Peru, Bolivia and Chile are those most severely affected by this distomatosis, though areas of Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela are also affected. As part of a multidisciplinary project, we present results of use of a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) forecast model to conduct an epidemiological analysis of human and animal fasciolosis in the central part of the Andes mountains. The GIS approach enabled us to develop a spatial and temporal epidemiological model to map the disease in the ar

The geography of sexual partnerships in Baltimore: applications of core theory dynamics using a geographic information system.

OBJECTIVE: Gonorrhea has a focused geographic distribution characterized by high incidence rates in defined "core" areas and decreased incidence as the radial distance from the central core increases. Dense cor group transmission has long been hypothesized. METHODS: We have previously mapped sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates in Baltimore census tracts using STD morbidity data interfaced with a geographic information system. Core areas were defined using a standard definition based on gonorrhea distribution. We studied spatial distance patterns between sexual partners, using the residen

Monitoring the Overall Quality of Groundwater Using a Geographic Information System in the Angads Plain (Oujda, Morocco).

The future of groundwater is one of the key challenges for sustainable water management, hence the need to monitor its overall quality. The objective of this work is to assess the overall quality and determine the spatiotemporal evolution of the Angads aquifer in northeastern Morocco in 2014 and 2020, based on the parameters NH4 +, NO3 -, EC, Cl-, and FC, as well as the Geographic Information System (GIS). The results of the comparison of these five parameters between 2014 and 2020 show a general increase in NH4 + and a decrease in NO3 - and FC at most sampling points. These changes could be a

Use of Aedes aegypti Oviposition Surveillance and a Geographic Information System for Planning Anti-Vectorial Measures.

Arboviruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti pose a threat to global public health. Because there are no vaccines or drugs available, the prevention of these diseases in Argentina is based on integrated vector control. In this work, the spatiotemporal dynamics of the vector distribution was analyzed by monitoring oviposition. This information allowed the planning of anti-vector interventions and the evaluation of their effect on the relative abundance of mosquito populations in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. Observed data were compared with the eggs expected via a statistical model based on meteorolo

Immunity to poliovirus in Afghanistan: A household sampling method for serological assessment based on geographical information systems.

Afghanistan continues to experience challenges affecting polio eradication. Mass polio vaccination campaigns, which aim to protect children under the age of 5, are a key eradication strategy. To date, the polio program in Afghanistan has only employed facility-based seroprevalence surveys, which can be subject to sampling bias. We describe the feasibility in implementing a cross-sectional household poliovirus seroprevalence survey based on geographical information systems (GIS) in three districts. Digital maps with randomly selected predetermined starting points were provided to teams, with a
